So I'm thinking about getting a p-bass, and lately I've been attracted to the '51 or Sting signature model. So other than hum, is there a big difference in tone? And why is the Sting model cheaper than the '51 reissue?

I find the SCPB to be punchier than the split coil.

The single coil is more in your face midrange to my ears. They are really quite different beasts. I have both as well as a Jazz. Necks are all very different too. Can you get to a music shop and try a few out?

The split coil is actually a humbucker.

I have. I definitely like the P-bass over the J-bass in both tone and neck. I've only tried the Squier CV version of the '51 and loved it's big chunky neck. I currently play a OLP Stingray copy. I love the neck because its nice and wide. I just like that sweet spot middle position single-coil sound that my single humbucker lacks.

Is the 51 P pick-up sound anything like a Jazz Neck P-up's sound ?

Nah, its a bit more twangy. I play a 51 RI and I really like the necks. The squier is a great deal and looks great.
