Relic/Heavy Relic Guitars

Forgive me if this has been discussed. I did a quick search and didn't come up with anything substantive.

What is the appeal of the "relic/heavy relic" guitars? I understand the desire to playa guitar just like our heros play, but why spend thousands of dollars an a beat up, brand new guitar. I just bought a MIM Strat that I love (candy apple red). I would love to own an Eric Clapton Signature Strat (But that will never happen unless I win the lottery. LOL) and at least it looks like a brand new guitar. Do people really play these "relics/heavy relics" or are they mostly popular with collectors?

Staring at myself in the bathroom mirror this morning, after the night before, I realized I am my own heavy relic.

I went to a Fender Demo of the Road Worn series by Greg Koch. And his take was if you have a Vintage Guitar that is too valuable to play out with you can get a Road Worn that looks and feels similar.

To each their own but i really enjoy my Road Worn 60s Strat.It feels like it a well built and very playable 50 year old guitar.

AAARRRGG!! a candy apple red guitar............. I think I'm going to be sick.....

When I joined this forum I was promised only Lake placid Blue would be mentioned.Candy Apple Red makes me go all funny and they have only just released me again..I am going to play my New Bedroom worn Baja.Its like a Road Worn but has pieces of my bath robe jamming up the S-1 and a hot water bottle stuck over its headstock to keep it warm .Teddy keeps guard when I am asleep :grin:

Why would anyone pay good money for a Candy Apple Red guitar when they sell perfectly good, brand new,Three Tone Sunbursts all day long, everyday??? That's like buying socks with holes pre-installed.

This is the best relic thread yet.

If we replaced words like "antigua" and "candy apple red" with "relic" then this would be an old thread... but in this day and age, I am glad to see us all having a laugh together over relics.

FINALLY! everyone realized that everything is funny.
I knew we were capable. I wonder how long this will go before somebody gets too gnarly with their "jokes" and it starts tearing at old wounds.

The tide seemed to turn about 2months ago imho. Some nooby started a thread about relics, a mod shut it down, then paul re-opened it to show the noob how these things go. IIRC the thread carried on in the usual manner untill a few pages in people got sick of hearing/reading/typing/saying the same old things and it all petered out into "each to his own"... After that thread, all the relic threads Ive read have been pretty polite and enjoyable.

Personally I miss the bad old days.:roll:

Not at all, I for one enjoy the comic relief. It get kinda dreary discussing amps, pickups, pedals, t-shirts and fretboards...

Surely the relic thing is like rehab that actually works..... poly free since 2003 an all that ;-)

Bedroom worn guitars are overrated....plus it takes forever to wear the finish with 1500 thread count sheets. My bathroom worn tele dominates over bedroom worn, though I'm not so sure about the smell.
