I used reranch butterscotch blonde, and reranch clear nitro over an ash body. I really like it. :) http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home-depot/166234-pics-2-finished-1-way.html telecasterrefin April 8th, 2010, 08:25 PM i think butterscotch is a little different Amadhunter April 8th, 2010, 08:33 PM ooops, sorry. The regular blond is whiter right? ThaLowEndTheory April 8th, 2010, 10:41 PM Blonde with dark grainfiller http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r239/gateeple/guitar/DSC00306.jpg http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r239/gateeple/guitar/DSC00307.jpg http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r239/gateeple/guitar/DSC00310.jpg ThaLowEndTheory April 8th, 2010, 10:44 PM Blonde with clear grianfiller http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt83/brianrb100/IMG_9383.jpg http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt83/brianrb100/IMG_9384.jpg telecasterrefin April 10th, 2010, 12:51 PM thanks! BluezyBruce April 10th, 2010, 02:21 PM Thats nice! thepassivevoice April 10th, 2010, 02:49 PM I guess I can't tell for sure without seeing the actual guitars, ThaLowEndTheory, but there doesn't seem to be much difference between the two finishes. Would you say it doesn't matter too whether you use a dark or clear filler on a blonde ash finish? ThaLowEndTheory April 10th, 2010, 03:25 PM The grain will show either way. It just depends on how much blonde you apply. If you use a dark grainfiller, it's going to take more blonde to block it out. In the pics I posted the clear grainfiller that was used was polycrylic. I didn't spray either one of the finishes. They are just some of the pics I have saved for reference. For a more traditional look, I'd go with a clear grainfiller or med brown grainfiller. telecasterrefin April 10th, 2010, 03:55 PM would that with some of the tinted clear coat get me something like this? http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w142/Mat3186/1975%20Fender%20Telecaster%20White%20Blonde/1975FenderTelecasterWhiteBlonde25.jpg ThaLowEndTheory April 10th, 2010, 05:49 PM Yes, but you would need much tint to the clear. It could quickly turn into butterscotch blonde on you if your not really careful. I would spray very light mist coats of clear sandwiched between regular coats of clear. Basically just alternating them until you get the color you're after. So it would go clear, mist coat of tinted clear, more clear, check color. Rinse and repeat until you get what u are after. Then continue on with regular clear once you get the color u want. Or you could use a clear that will yellow with uv exposure, and make sure the body gets plenty of sun. If seen a few guys get impressive results from uv exposure fairly quickly. telecasterrefin April 10th, 2010, 06:57 PM what happens if you don't use grain filler kevin-san April 10th, 2010, 07:29 PM what happens if you don't use grain filler After wet sanding and buffing you'll have pits in the finish and you won't be happy with it. Grain filling is the worst part of finishing but the prep work is key to a mirror finish. You can go with an oil based filler or polycrylic. I've done both and prefer oil-based filler. check out the reranch forum and read the reranch 101 info Here's my first tele in RR Blonde ... http://amcforum.net/images/kevin/tele/IMG_0197.JPG It's not that tough. Simply spread on with your fingers ... http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs251.ash1/17851_1332522837406_1361072920_943734_2811018_n.jp g Wait about 20 mins then scrape across the grain (carefully) with a razor or credit card to work the filler into the grain. Let dry overnight, sand, repeat until it's smooth. It takes a couple days but what's 2-3 days to get better results. Just don't rush things. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs251.ash1/17851_1332522917408_1361072920_943736_4361257_n.jp g telecasterrefin April 10th, 2010, 07:50 PM yeah im going to use grain filler and sand and sealer... the blonde looks perfect, and i will use the tint lightly misted like i was recommended to give it that more golden yellow look... dynamohum April 10th, 2010, 09:04 PM Great examples thalowendtheory. The use of dark grain filler has worked wonders. thepassivevoice April 10th, 2010, 10:53 PM what happens if you don't use grain filler Some porous woods can look OK without filler, but I don't think ash is one of them. In any case, it won't look like an old Fender, and that's what most people seem to be shooting for with blonde finishes. CraigB April 11th, 2010, 01:00 PM My RR blond over ash seems to appear a little more yellow than the other guitars on this thread. I had planned on misting with amber after the blonde to get a little yellower "steeped-in-tar&nicotine-for-50-years" look, but I like the look of it as-is. Best regards, Craig telecasterrefin April 11th, 2010, 05:15 PM yeah if i do the tint, im going to do it really subtle, i want it to look really light looking still, but when i think of blonde i picture it a little aged i guess telecasterrefin April 11th, 2010, 05:22 PM https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=bfba3221af&view=att&th=127eebbeb3a883a2&attid=0.1&disp=inline&zw these are my guitars, one a traditional american telecaster, and the other a korean telecaster with the same specs as a gibson style guitar, including the set neck and bridge style |
