Anyone else do Heartaches by the Number? Our band is going to try Dwight's version at our next practice, so I'm working on the fiddle part. What a killer record! Love the fiddle part and the great shuffle feel. Should be a good dance tune.

Here's the intro I do, over a V V V I Key of A
E E E A
-------------------------------------------------------
-3-5-7-5-7s9-7-5s3--------s7-5-3--2-2-3-5------------
-4-6-7-6-7s9-7-6s4-4-2s1 -s7-6-4--2-2-4-6------------
--------------------6-4s2------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------

I learned (stole) that from a great pedal steel player, Dave Berzansky

Here's us playing it with Gerry Walker on PSG, he plays it a bit differently.

Ward - I'm working on Brantley Kearns' fiddle intro from Dwight's first record, which is over the I IV V.

GB - Ray Price's version is good, but I definitely prefer Dwight's Bakersfield honky tonk sound to Ray's Nashville sound with the string section.

I think you should really investigate a few of those Dwight shuffle tunes because there's something Pete Anderson does rhythm wise that's really cool. Usually, with shuffle's the guitar does an upstroke on the and (i.e. 1 AND 2 AND 3 AND 4 AND). Dwight's shuffles have that going on, but there's also another guitar doing this cool downstroke on the beat on top of that.

The best example I can point you to is Dwight's Playboy, since I haven't listened to his Heartaches in awhile. I think that's the perfect combination of a Ray Price shuffle with the Bakersfield sound. The guitar part is what nails it, along with the fiddle intro. If you study Dwight doing Heartaches, Playboy, and Always Late you'll have a great primer on shuffles.
