Hi,
While my PR clone is in the crapper I am using my DR. This is for bedroom level playing.
I am wondering if i can soften the amp a little bit by subbing out the 5u4 with another tube: My choices are
5r4
5V4
5Y3
I can try them to see what works but are there any red flags (e.g. max plate voltage or heater current)?.
Thanks
Drew

They'll all function, but none of them will give you "conversation-level" distortion. Give 'em a whirl, though!

Thanks Scott!
I dont really want to overdrive the amp but if I can get it up to 3 that would be a good start. I dont really expect changing the tube to help but it cant hurt (unless it hurts :)
Cheers

try throwing a heavy blanket over the amp - that will be much more effective than changing the rectifier.

Weber MASS 25 (OK, maybe a 50 just to be safe)

The 5Y3 is so lossy you'd have to re-bias. Even then, for the bedroom, you'd be better off with a Champ.

Thanks.. Champ and VC are in storage.
My Princeton has a champ output section so does that count?
She is under the weather so while I am doing renovations I have the choice between a DR or a 69 SR.
Since my hands are somewhat tied I thought it is a good time to play with rectifiers.
I have a Weber MiniMass, I will use that if I can find it. Otherwise I will just suck it up.
