Need Help with Discoloration Issue

Hi everyone. Some of you may have read that I am building a partscaster. I have run into an issue that has bitten me twice and I'm unsure of the cause or the solution.

I am using Reranch Ice Blue Metallic on the body. I got a nice looking color coat that was consistent across the body. I let it dry for an hour and misted on a first coat of clear. I let that sit for 30 mins and misted a second coat. Then after waiting an hour I put on a nice wet coat of clear and all looked nice. I waited another hour and put on another wet coat of clear. I let it sit overnight and when I awoke this morning the color was no longer consistent across the front. A few darker spots appeared. This is the second time this has happened and I'm not sure what to do about it. I have read about blushing, but I don't believe this is blushing as I am not seeing any milky white appearance, just darker spots.

I have posted pics below. The easiest spot to see in the pic is on the cut away where the picguard will go. However there are others that aren't as easily visible in the pics.

Please Help!

Been there!

I built this beauty last summer using RR IBM:

It took me three tries to get the color consistent! And I think it's all about going to great lengths to ensure that the metal flakes don't flatten into the surrounding lacquer.

I think you're on the right track, but I would suggest the following...

1) Let the color coat cure for a few days before you start misting on the clear.
2) More misted coats and over a longer period of time before you start with any wet coats (i.e. give 'em time to gas out a bit before adding the next layer).

Both should help! Worked for me!

Ciao,
Rick

Man, I so totally had it backwards. I thought you were supposed to spray the clear on fairly quickly to keep the flakes from moving.

I had a similar problem using RR inca silver. After a couple of really wet coats it all sort of evened out but I was never quite happy with the results. Next time around I will try your advise BlackBelt. It sounds like a good approach.
