jakatone March 9th, 2010, 07:29 PM hi everyone!!
I have a 72 custom tele, with a dimarzio paf classic in the neck....i would like to put a single coil sizes humbucker in the bridge. there are TONS of choices, so i came to you for a piece of advice. I am looking for a zepp type of sound, that kinda chunk, i have one more tele to do everything else.
Thanks
TheFifth March 9th, 2010, 07:45 PM Personally I like the Dimarzio Tone Zone T and have it in 2 teles. It's not over the top (like the super distortion) but gives a nice chunky sound with decent bottom end. I also split coil mine with a mini switch. When switched to single coil it actually gives a fairly decent Tele sound, obviously not up to purist standards, but perfectly passable for a split coil bucker. So for me it gives the best of both worlds as I can retain that nice classic middle switch position when split to single coil.
jakatone March 9th, 2010, 07:58 PM thanks man, i was actually very interested in Tone Zone T, and the coil tap will come in handy thatīs for sure
Verne Bunsen March 9th, 2010, 08:07 PM I tried a couple out when I converted one of my Teles to an HH. I tried the Seymour Duncan Hot Rails and found it to be entirely TOO hot, pulled it out and swapped in a Seymour Duncan Hot Lead Stack for Tele and was in hog heaven. Very punchy and a great tone, sounds great. Hotter than stock, but not overboard. It also does nicely when cut to one coil, a little brighter and grittier, i use it in that configuration often. It's not a true single coil, but it definately has some of that attitude. There is a bit of a volume spike when you cut it, not necessarily good or bad, just is. I'm a compressor junkie so it gets smoothed out in my rig. Hope some of that helps!

jakatone March 9th, 2010, 08:23 PM sure it does :) i already have two candidates....one more question....do you use 500k pots for both the volume and tone? i know the humbuckers normally have 500k, but iīm not sure about the tone pot
TheFifth March 9th, 2010, 08:24 PM I agree with Verne on the Duncan Hot Rails. A friend has one in his Tele and it's all together too hot for my liking. It seems very shrill and unbalanced to me. The Tone Zone I use seems to have more depth and dare I say it is more ballsy! Almost an LP kinda sound.
The Hot Rails kinda put me off Duncan buckers, but maybe I'll try the Hot Lead Stack in my neck project, sounds intriguing. Cheers for the info Verne.

Iron Maiden guitarists actually use hot rails on their strats....so i guess that tells alot
tpaul March 9th, 2010, 08:28 PM I have the tone zone T and love it. I tried the hot lead stack and was underwhelmed... it wasn't what I would call "hot" and it wasn't a very humbucker-like sound. I can see how that would be perfect for some folks but I was looking for the chunky, thick PAF tone in a tele bridge pickup size and the Tone Zone nailed it.

Interesting question! My Partscaster has 2x500k pots in and my new American Standard (only wired the Tone Zone into it yesterday!) has 250k pots (it may have a Delta Tone no load tone pot, but I'm not sure). I was reading through the Dimarzio site and they say you can use either, but their personal favourite is 250k.
I guess comparing the two guitars I have (with the same amp settings), the 500k sounds a little brighter and the 250k has a little more depth and is perhaps more rounded. There is SO little in it though and you'll make more difference with the EQ on your amp. I guess I prefer the 250k and would probably use that next time.
YMMV
Verne Bunsen March 9th, 2010, 08:53 PM I initially ran with 500k pots in both tone and volume on the HB equipped axe, but later swapped in a 1meg for the tone pot to let a little more top end through. Noticeably brighter, I dig it
jakatone March 9th, 2010, 08:59 PM well there is no harm in experimenting, i might as well try the 250k since i already have one....anyone interested in trading a Dimarzio Tone Zone T for a SD Jerry Donahue' :)))
telefan62 March 9th, 2010, 09:08 PM I'm pretty fond of the Duncan Little '59 in my Tele....

A buddy of mine has 2 in his Strat, one at the bridge, one at the neck. The sound is close to, but not quite a PAF voice. Naturally, you won't get the full bodied PAF sound since it's limited by it's size, but it comes damn close on the Strat model, and since the Tele model would be a bit bigger, you'll probably be a little bit closer to the PAF sound...do a coil tap, and you can get an almost, but not quite completely Tele sound out of it, too. End of the day, it's not a perfect solution for you, but it's pretty damn close!
Additionally, I haven't heard a Seymour I didn't like, yet

Another big + on the little 59. I have it with a push/pop coil tap in my tone knob and I love it. Adds a slight amount of color to the overall sound of the guitar and I actually use my middle position as my primary solo setting because I love the way the two pick ups sound together. Just a slight amount of edge without going away from the classic tele sound. With the coil tap I can also switch it back to a single coil if I need that tone.

That is a great looking axe!!! I can't read the headstock, what brand is it? Was it stock or did you mod it?

thanks man!! itīs not a fender.....a guitar builder named "cats" built it for me...he only makes guitars by order. great guy, makes even better guitars:mrgreen: i discussed with him a lot about the wood, parts, pickups...all before he started building it, so there was no need for modding after it was done. oh, and the headstock says LeRatone Custom.....a joke really, concerning my nickname
