Norrin Radd February 13th, 2010, 09:23 PM Dude -how can thepedalmaster not already know??!??!? kennedyj February 13th, 2010, 09:27 PM Dude -how can thepedalmaster not already know??!??!? Ouch! Mike Simpson February 13th, 2010, 10:41 PM I use an Ibanez AD-9 Chrismo February 13th, 2010, 10:44 PM Wampler Faux Tape Echo sounds good. I got a Boss Space Echo today that's excellent - does the slapback and ambient stuff with ease. schenkadere February 13th, 2010, 11:08 PM I love the Tech 21 Boost DLA...so natural sounding...lots of tweaking available. I have the first version, but the V2 must awesome with tap tempo, triplets and trails. Love that extra 9 dB boost too...a nice bonus...and made in the good ole USA. TreRocker February 13th, 2010, 11:08 PM I use the mxr carbon copy and a boss dd-7. I get crazy delay. thepedalmaster February 13th, 2010, 11:58 PM I was thinking about getting both of the wamplers delays. dalandan February 14th, 2010, 12:24 AM for 400 bucks i would get either the eventide timefactor or the empress super delay. both should stem the delay gas. but fwiw, i would just get a DD7 and get over the little nuances. Kingpin February 14th, 2010, 12:45 AM Dude -how can thepedalmaster not already know??!??!?:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: OuttaspaceMan February 14th, 2010, 12:47 AM +1 on the Empress Super Delay. My ears preferred the tone of it rather than the Timefactor. But I'm sure there will be others who will speak otherwise too. Btw.. You can find a used one for less than 400 =) Pinball_Wizard February 14th, 2010, 10:07 AM 400 bucks price range on a delay. MXR Carbon Copy Roland Space Echo OR Boss DD-7 There are other high end digital delays out there, but the DD-7 will more than get it done, and the Carbon Copy just sounds fantastic. If you want the cool powder blue box, get the Aqua Puss. k tone February 14th, 2010, 10:43 AM If I had $400 to spend +1 on the Superdelay. On my board I have an MXR CC and a Digitech Digidelay. The Digidelay is the t!ts man - tap tempo, modulation, reverse, small looper among other things. I got it for $40 usedwith adapter. flatout9 February 14th, 2010, 10:59 AM Yeah dude, your the pedal master. hannigan February 14th, 2010, 11:10 AM Folks should ask themselves a few questions when delay shopping. What style music is it for? What other gear will you use with it? How much crazy modulation do you want? There are just so many, in many flavors . I am guessing you are wanting an analogue delay, because of your OP . Delay is problem for me, I am an addict. Currently I am using the Malekko 616 analog delay, and am very happy with it, I like how it can be run as a true bypass pedal at the push of a button. It plays nice or you can take it to insane modulation. hannigan February 14th, 2010, 11:23 AM Yeah dude, your the pedal master. Im not a spelling or grammar ****, but if you are going to slag on someone you should use the correct (your) Thanks John Mellor February 14th, 2010, 11:26 AM Hi- See a couple folks here using the CC and a digital delay. What do you use each for, do you use them together? Or each has its own purpose. I own the CC and like the presense it adds. It's been a lot of fun. But also understand its not exactly going into U2 territory. So intrigued by the thought of adding a digital delay to the mix....Hope that doesn't hijack the thread but it sounds like the answer to the origional question is take your $400 and get an analog and a digital delay.... thepedalmaster February 14th, 2010, 11:27 AM lol hannigan I was thinking about the empress but its 50 over budget. The eventide is way to complicated, and yes i prefer analog. slotted screw February 14th, 2010, 11:51 AM i think the empress super delay is a really good sounding delay pedal. the timefactor was a bit digital sounding along side the empress.. if you want analog for a cheaper price, try the carbon copy. i'm also gasing for the new malekko ekko 616. Norrin Radd February 14th, 2010, 03:36 PM Hmmmm........with a $400 budget I might just look at a Maxon AD999 and stop right there. E5RSY February 14th, 2010, 03:44 PM If I had $400 to blow, I'd use about a third of that (at most) to pick up a used Boss DD-3 on eBay and then have some $$$ left over for other toys. Heck, for about $200 you could get a new DD-3 from Keeley with mod. twangjeff February 14th, 2010, 03:53 PM I've heard good things about that Malekko delay, but haven't played one yet. It seems like a heck of a deal for under $200 bucks. thepedalmaster February 14th, 2010, 05:09 PM Unless i can get find 200 underneath the couch pillows to get a diamond memory lane i will get 2 wamplers or 2-4 dd3 or something like that. DastardlyDan February 14th, 2010, 05:19 PM I got the T-Rex Replica and its awesome and only 399 at most places ledet February 14th, 2010, 05:23 PM An analog delay pedal is awesome, but a Boss DD7 is just some of the best of modern guitar equipment. I love mine, even though I don't even use half of the fancy features, lol. charlie chitlin February 14th, 2010, 05:30 PM I've got a buddy who is a serious echo gourmet. I bet he owns a dozen Echo-Plexes. He owns a very serious recording studio and has about the best pair of ears I've ever come across. I recently asked him what I should get. He said the most Echo-Plex-like pedal he's heard for a long time that you can get "without breaking the bank" is the Dan-Echo. I was pretty shocked! That'll leave you enough left from your $400 to get a Carbon Copy and 1 or 2 others. thepedalmaster February 14th, 2010, 05:53 PM Charlie thats's weird because i have a friend that owns every copy of a real tape echo, fulltone, maestro etc, he said that the faux tape echo is the best . Do you have the dan reel echo? Doc February 14th, 2010, 08:11 PM It really depends on what features and type of pedal you want. For me the DD-7 is what works great for me. thepedalmaster February 14th, 2010, 08:12 PM Yeah you're correct doc. Tim Bowen February 14th, 2010, 11:48 PM Hi- See a couple folks here using the CC and a digital delay. What do you use each for, do you use them together? Or each has its own purpose. I own the CC and like the presense it adds. It's been a lot of fun. But also understand its not exactly going into U2 territory. So intrigued by the thought of adding a digital delay to the mix.... Lots of different approaches for the combo. Analog (and "analog-voiced") delays usually play better into the front end of moderately pushed tube amps than do the more pristine repeats of digital. On the flip side, digital can sometimes better push forward some applications such as super wet volume swells and certain rhythmic things (not necessarily rockabilly slap, at least for me, as I remain a bucket brigade chip snob in this respect). Obviously, if the amp itself is really saturated, delay within an FX loop is preferable. For general purposes into the front end of a tuber, I always prefer an analog. So there's the tone/gear interaction aspect for one thing. Another approach is to set up an analog for 'go to' ambience and air that works for most anything other than the really syncopated funky stuff, staccato stops, etc. - and a digital for bells and whistles, presets for specific applications, stuff like that. I'd be embarrassed to list my delay stable here, but by current working board contains two analogs and a digital. I use a Maxon AD-900 for general ambience, 400-600ms delay time, mix and repeats to tastes. I use an MXR Carbon Copy for doubling and slapback. I sometimes match the CC's delay time to the Maxon if I want certain passages to be a bit over the top; for such, I combine them... I just set the mix of the CC so it's not cartoonish as combined with the Maxon. I also use the CC occasionally for the cheap trick self-oscillation flying saucer noise thing. The digital I'm using curerently is a T-Rex Reptile. Again, my default ms setting is matched to the AD-900, but I call upon this one mostly for modulated repeats. Sometimes the modulation is subtle, sometimes it's ridiculous and goofy. I also use this one for fake Leslie fast rate tones now and then; I can set the delay time at 10-15 ms or thereabout, the mix reasonably wet, the wow and flutter modulation to taste, and it does a pretty good emulation. Perhaps not as good as a dedicated modulation wiggler, but I get more mileage from a delay that also modulates than I do from a wiggler that doesn't delay. Multiple delays can also get the "ping pong" thing (although not necessarily in "stereo" - depends upon how signal is routed). As for the old school method of setting delay time by ear with multiple delays, I like it for recording, not so much for live. However, there are quite a few self-contained delays that address the ping pong stuff, if such is a priority. Tim Bowen February 14th, 2010, 11:51 PM I need another delay like another hole in my head, but I'm intrigued by the Empress. Would love to hear more details as to sounds and functionality from any owners that would care to comment further. flatout9 February 15th, 2010, 07:00 AM Im not a spelling or grammar ****, but if you are going to slag on someone you should use the correct (your) Thanks Thanks for the input now pull out your snow boots and find a sense of humor! Thanks! yonie February 15th, 2010, 07:28 AM What about the EHX Memory Boy / Toy? I like it, it's analog and it's not expensive. Chrismo February 15th, 2010, 10:01 AM What about the EHX Memory Boy / Toy? I like it, it's analog and it's not expensive. +1 the Deluxe version due to come out any day now should be interesting...tap tempo! thepedalmaster February 15th, 2010, 10:50 AM There are so many delays out there thats why i sort of tend to go towards the best. I am thinking about the mxr carbon copy and i also thought of dmm but the dmm sounds really modulated. So analog echo vs carbon copy? Chrismo February 15th, 2010, 11:21 AM There are so many delays out there thats why i sort of tend to go towards the best. I am thinking about the mxr carbon copy and i also thought of dmm but the dmm sounds really modulated. So analog echo vs carbon copy? Start with the Carbon Copy. I did. I grew into it (and out of it) and realized what I was really looking for - but the CC was a great starting point for delays. thepedalmaster February 15th, 2010, 01:46 PM Ok i got a dd3 for christmas from my bro ... But needless to say i had boss products. I have played on the cc and loved them but i also played on the wampler analog echo and loved it also. thepedalmaster February 15th, 2010, 01:47 PM P.S the price doesn't matter, i can get a wampler for 150 Guitar_Ninja February 15th, 2010, 02:00 PM Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man charlie chitlin February 15th, 2010, 10:50 PM Charlie thats's weird because i have a friend that owns every copy of a real tape echo, fulltone, maestro etc, he said that the faux tape echo is the best . Do you have the dan reel echo? I'm a pretty straight-up Jump/Blues player, so delay is new to me.' I joined a cover band and needed a cheap delay...I'll get a better one if the gigs start coming. I bought a Dan-o p,b&j. It's a toy...like it came with a Happy Meal...but it sounds really good. If it was in a sturdy metal box with a decent switch it would be a pretty good pedal. Pajama February 16th, 2010, 06:46 AM I love the Tech 21 Boost DLA...so natural sounding...lots of tweaking available. I have the first version, but the V2 must awesome with tap tempo, triplets and trails. Love that extra 9 dB boost too...a nice bonus...and made in the good ole USA. I love my Boost DLA also. Great sound, very versatile and easy to tweak. I don't really think I will get the newer version because the one I have is perfect for my needs. PJ Little Ricky February 16th, 2010, 08:33 AM I like the Dan-o Reel Echo because it can do slapback to long delay, and it's infinite repeats can be used for wacky outer space stuff. It also has a separate 'dry' output and a 'Sound on Sound' loop function. However, I've found that it introduces LOTS of hiss into my sound. Perhaps I'm placing it at the wrong spot in the chain. crossroader February 16th, 2010, 09:50 AM "I bought a Dan-o p,b&j. It's a toy...like it came with a Happy Meal...but it sounds really good. If it was in a sturdy metal box with a decent switch it would be a pretty good pedal." I've been through a bunch of delays and I think the PB&J is one of the best-sounding pedals out there. I don't know how Dano manages to make a cheap pedal sound so good. I love mine. "However, I've found that it introduces LOTS of hiss into my sound." I've also got a Reel Echo and I discovered that if I hook up BOTH outputs, the noise level drops dramatically (to almost nothing). I plug the wet signal into Channel 1 of my SFDR and the dry signal into Channel 2. Once again, Dano seems to have a knack for delivering cool delay tones. "I need another delay like another hole in my head, but I'm intrigued by the Empress. Would love to hear more details as to sounds and functionality from any owners that would care to comment further." Don't know about the Super Delay, but my Empress Tremolo is my all-time favorite pedal. Great design, excellent build quality, and stellar sounds. I know "analog delay" has been favored in these discussions, but I recently went in search of a more versatile delay and ended up getting a Digitech Time Bender. Great pedal! Loads of cool features, including a "strum tempo" (like tap tempo except you, well, strum the pattern). The analog modes deliver pretty convincing tones, too. I'm still in learning mode with this one, but so far I'm really liking it. kludge February 16th, 2010, 12:14 PM The TC Nova Delay cured me of analog snobbery. Once I got it, I sold an Ibanez AD202 rackmount BBD studio delay, because I didn't need it anymore. And the Nova Delay can do a bazillion things that analog delays can't, without turning into a super-complex monster like the TimeFactor. Jeff_K February 16th, 2010, 12:31 PM Another DD7 user here. I had the Ibanez DE7 which was cheap and easy to use but no tap tempo. I don't see how you can gig effectively (assuming you play outside) without the tap tempo feature. At home there's time to dial in the right timing, but outside you absolutely have to have the tap tempo. I picked up a DD7 for $80 on Craigslist and what a find. Great pedal and the tap feature works great. JMercer February 17th, 2010, 02:19 PM Line6 DL4 and TC Nova Delay eddie knuckles February 17th, 2010, 06:56 PM MXR Carbon Copy and a Hardwire DL8.... rbrienzo February 17th, 2010, 07:06 PM I have been looking at the Carl Martin Echotone. Freight Twang February 18th, 2010, 05:45 PM CC for sale http://www.tdpri.com/phpclassifieds/showproduct.php/product/17659 jacob February 18th, 2010, 06:14 PM I bought this thing about 2 weeks ago and it's pretty incredible. http://damagecontrolusa.com/2009/02/timeline-the-ultimate-delay/ it's huge, and takes up alot of power. But for the price range it has some pretty incredible features... It apparently doesn't convert your dry signal to analog, has modulation for all delay types. Not to mention if you have a midi controller you have access to 128 presets. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6R30Q9k-SA Tim Bowen February 19th, 2010, 03:06 AM "I need another delay like another hole in my head, but I'm intrigued by the Empress. Don't know about the Super Delay, but my Empress Tremolo is my all-time favorite pedal. Great design, excellent build quality, and stellar sounds. That's nice to know, thanks. I'm interested in the trem as well as the delay. I have the Empress Para EQ, which is pretty impressive. Tsetse February 19th, 2010, 08:02 AM My 2 (Euro) cents to the original poster: Hit the stores and try everything out, there are a lot of good (and bad) delay pedals out there. Keep in mind there are three basic effects that work differently and give different sounds: -Tape Echo, really expensive to buy and to maintain, but it's a sound nothing else can really reproduce if you want THAT sound. However, the two following types can also do things you won't find anywhere else. -Analog Delay -Digital Delay Personally, I need two delay pedals to be happy (I won't go into makes and models here): -One good and versatile digital delay. No matter if I want rhythmic delay (dotted 8th note stuff like The Edge, for example), modulated delay or maybe reverse echo. Tap tempo really helps as well. A good digital delay produces echoes that are clean and bright and sound a lot like the original signal. A loop function can sometimes be nice as well and these are often included with digital delays. Those are all features normally associated with a digital delay. -One warm and musical sounding analog delay without a ton of features. Oscillation can be produced easily if wanted, the delays get warmer with each repeat (bucket brigade, loss of highs in the repeats, very musical), slapback echo sounds great. Those are generally much easier to use than digital delays. Usually I don't like digital pedals, but a good digital delay can do things a good analog pedal cannot, and vice versa. Digital delays work well with a clean(ish) amp, not so well with a cooking amp, there an analog pedal works better. I don't know any digital delay that does a convincing job of emulating the warm bucket brigade sound of an analog delay. I'm only happy if I've got a feature-laden, bling-bling digital delay pedal and an easy-to-use, intuitive and hassle-free analog pedal beneath my feet. You guessed it, I'm a delay junkie . Jammin'John1 February 19th, 2010, 11:16 AM hmmmm........with a $400 budget i might just look at a maxon ad999 and stop right there. +1 jj guitarzan13 February 19th, 2010, 11:37 AM Line 6 DL4 !! slotted screw February 19th, 2010, 11:47 AM another vote on the DL4!! lareplus March 10th, 2010, 10:17 AM Visual Sound, H20 has both a wonderful chorus and a superb echo delay. . .and you can use both in combination. . .gives lots of choices, I love mine. . Teleglide March 10th, 2010, 10:25 AM I have several old Boss Dm2's (great but old and slightly unreliable) and a Carbon Copy, which sounds a little sterile to me. It also will do more extreme delays but I dn't need that - I just want a slapback. I just picked up the new Way Huge Aqua Puss (now distributed by Dunlop and much cheaper than the original). It's about $150 and sounds fantastic to me. gypsyseven March 10th, 2010, 10:30 AM MXR Carbon Copy:!: Verne Bunsen March 11th, 2010, 03:44 AM MXR Carbon Copy:!: Yup, what he said. Just finally got my hands on one and it was like angels singing. And if you have a $400 budget, you could buy like 10 cases of Corona with the remainder. No no, no need to thank me, this is what I do... beexter March 24th, 2010, 07:58 AM Boss DD-7. Really versatile and sounds great. Sits in the mix really well to which is something i struggled with on the DE-7 and Echohead octatonic March 24th, 2010, 08:34 AM I'm very happy with the Eventide Timefactor. Definitely worth the extra you spend on it. I found the DD7 disappointing in terms of audio quality. Big John March 24th, 2010, 09:51 AM Ignore the 'Joe Satriani' name and try a Vox 'Time Machine', I got one at christmas time and am now getting rid of all my other delays as this will cover them all tone wise and definitely for ease of use. The digital side is super clean as it should be and the 'vintage' option adds a nice, warm analog sound with a little modulation as well. The tap tempo is the easiest I have used and feels great, just hope it will stand up to the stampings. http://www.musictoyz.com/img200902/vox_timemachine.jpg Just my opinion of course but maybe worth a try. silentandlisten June 14th, 2010, 01:47 AM +1 on the t-rex replica. I, being a teenager, don't have the dough for one but I've used one and it sounded great, very warm sound reminiscent of the echoplex/binson echorecs. plus it had tap tempo. if you're willing to spend 400 bones, I think the replica is the way to go. (no I don't work for t-rex) 1955 June 14th, 2010, 02:42 AM I played a Carbon Copy a couple weeks ago for the first time and that pedal kicks butt! I have an old Deluxe Memory Man that rocks and an AD-9 which is good. But man I am tempted to sell the AD-9 (which is very reliable) for a C.C. Don't know about reliability of the C.Copy yet, though. Shoot, if I were you, I'd get the C.C. and put the other $300 into the bills. If it works and is cheap, that's where it's at. I had a Diamond M. Lane and TTE and all that stuff. Somebody spills beer on it and you'll forget to play the next chord! |
