okay, y'all have had lots of good suggestions on improving my stomp box performance.
next question: how do i stop my stomp boxes from picking up broadcast sounds - radio, tv, and telephones?
rush and doctor laura just don't fit my sound...

...and keep your cable lengths as short as possible. For example, I used to use a 20-foot cable from my pedals to my amp. Most of the time, my amp wasn't that far away, so most of the cable was coiled up on the floor. In some rooms, the coiled cable acted as an antenna and I picked up all sorts of interference.
Other things to consider:
-make sure your guitar is properly grounded.
-sheilding your guitar's control cavity might help, especially if you're using single coil p.u.'s
-keep power cables away from instrument cables. If they must cross paths, try to keep them at right angles to each other.
-in an extreme case, a noise suppressor might help cut down on interference.
