This is the place for new owners of the just released CV Custom and Thinline models.

The other CV thread got so big it would be a mess to combine these 2 new models so lets start a new club.

No reason to add serial #'s to this one that turned out to be a nightmare in the other thread.

Nice job Mark...and thanks for thinking ahead regarding the serial #'s....that was certainly cool, but poor Carzee (and whoever else helped keep that list updated!)

This Custom is gonna be hard to avoid.

I love my CV 50's tele, for sure. Are these new models being made in China like the CV 50? I've been following the posts, but have not seen it confirmed yet. I can't wait for your personal review. I am hoping for a 20% off coupon soon. I will most likely get a Custom and then maybe even the Thinline. I'm more attracted to this Squier line up than the Fenders now!

Yes all the CV series Teles Strats and Bass guitars are made in China.

I had no idea the CV's would become so popular I really thought maybe 50-75-100 tops would enter their serial #'s on the CV 50's.

The list got so long the forum software cant show it all in 1 message so probably a better idea not to list the serials.

One reason I added the serials to that original CV thread was mine was so good I thought quality might change or they might change the specs and we could have a serial # breakdown of older vs newer ones. But the qualuty stayed the same np specs changed.

this is about the most *realistic* GAS i've had in a while. i've been gassing over the 62 customs for years, but now the price point on these squiers is enough to make me pull the trigger. all i'm waiting for is a few good reports from the tdpri members.

You might not have to change the pickups if they are anything like the CV 50's are. These dont have a cheap or toy sound they sound as good as the way more expensive Fenders do to me.

Man, I may have to get one of those and drop a set of Bardens in there. As pretty as the CV Custom is, I already have a 60s Classic which I love. Geez. The double binding sure is attractive. But I think the CV Thinline is calling to me. My GAS fund is empty, though. Aaaarrrggghhh. CS

+1

Wish they had more color choices. But, the bang for buck factor is extremely high on this one. I'd love this in Daphne Blue. I wonder if this could be a way of getting one easily. Hmmm...

They are (as well all know) a great modding platform.

Starting at the headstock and working my way down.

Tuners appear to be the same as the 50's CV which look just like all the ping tuners Ive had.

The CVC has the round string tree and its in the same position as the 50's CV which is inaccurate as far as vintage goes but these arent designed to be exact clones of vintage guitars they say that right in their advertisements.

The nut width is 1.625 same as the 50's CV and the same as many of the MIM series the 50's Classic 60's Classic 50's Classic Esquire.

The frets are the same as the 50's CV medium jumbos but not tall ones.

The neck is thinner on the CVC than the CV 50's which is .840 just a guess Id say its around .810-.820.

I did put a C clamp on the 50's CV neck and set it so it was snug @ the first fret and then put it on the CVC and it wasnt snug.

I can wrap my thumb almost all the way around the CVC neck cant do that on the CV 50's.

Both have tinted gloss necks.

Hardware.

The hardware seems a little different on the CVC its shiny and doesnt have that sorta grey shade the 50's CV has I could tell a pretty big difference looking at them side by side.

SO for all the guys that complained about the 50's CV hardware its fixed on the CVC.

Jack cup was tight on the CVC was loose on the CV 50's when I got it.

Setup right out of the box.

50's CV was a little better zero buzzes anywhere and Ive never heard a buzz anywhere on it the CVC has a little string buzz on the E-A strings the E isnt buzzing as bad as it did right out of the box but the A still buzzes just a little.

I could adjust the saddles and fix this easy so its not much of an issue.

Pots and knobs

The pots on the CVC turn more freely they dont feel stiff like the 50's CV did.

Havent had a chance to look under the control panel as of yet on the CVC but will soon and take a pic.

Pickups

CV 50's uses Alnico III
CVC Alnico V

The pickups sound thicker on the CVC. The neck has tons of bite and isnt muddy at all you could do a whole gig on the neck pickup using the tone control.

The bridge pickup pole pieces on the CVC arent staggard but they arent flat either they stick up just a tad but no where near as high as staggard ones.

To my ears thru my amp which I didnt change the settings on from the way I have it set to play the 50's CV the CVC is louder has more range of tones.

CVC sounds better than the CV 50's way better I thought the exact same thing about the 50's Classic MIM and 60's Classic MIM I always liked the 60's sound better.

Fit and Finish

flawless I went over this CVC with a fine toothed comb haha and its flawless the binding is applied real smooth you cant feel any place where it doesnt feel as smooth as the body and I cant even find a seam in the binding.

Weight

CVC 7 pounds 2 ounces
CV 50's 7 pounds 13 ounces both weights taken on the same postal digital scales

Final thought

If the CVC had just a little bigger thicker neck it would be perfect.

Im sure I will warm up to this thinner neck it just feels weird cause its different than the 50's CV.

The CVC seems like its begging for some bigger strings I think I will try a set of light top heavy bottom 52-10's on it and see how it likes those in a couple weeks.

Mark Davis
January 21st, 2010, 01:03 AM
Update I got used to the neck after putting on 10's and reseating it.

24 hours later the slight buzzing stopped and now it plays perfect with no buzz.

I thought I wasnt gonna bond with the rosewood neck so I put the one from my 50's CV which Id played everyday for 19 months. It did t sound as good so I switched back to the rosewood one.

After I swaped the necks and used 10's it played fine so now I have zero complains.

Maybe the neck just needed reseating?

BoogerRooger
January 21st, 2010, 02:32 AM
Glad you're bonding with the custom! Must say, I was shocked by you initial response, especially as I was waiting for mine to arrive!

I'm surprised just how different mine feels from my CV '50s. I've done some pretty unscientific measuring and the specs of the necks and the frets are virtually the same on my Custom and '50s. I reckon that with the natural variation between individual guitars, I happened to get 2 that are very similar.

I've got mine set up how I like it now, and I'm getting more used to it. Overall, I'm really pleased with it. It looks great and sounds superb, and it compliments the '50s very nicely.

Talked to my local shop yesterday, said it would be two weeks before they started getting them in. Stopped in today to pickup a headphone special order and mentioned the Custom to a favorite employee. "We've got one of those on the bench, hasn't been on the floor yet". It hadn't even had the strings tightened yet. After tax, my cost was $361.70, which was about $5 less than my free discretionary funds. Needless to say, it's home with me now. Weight is just a hair over 7 lbs on the bathroom scale.

Received my Thinline today (S/N CGS0915873) from Musician's Friend. It looks way better in person than any picture I have seen! It is truly a work of art. This thing is gorgeous!

Oh boy does this thing have tone! And did I mention that it has tone?

And the weight.........I haven't weighed it yet, but this thing makes my CV feel like a boat anchor. It definitely feels more balanced, more right, in the hands.

As others have mentioned, it needs heavier strings. I will do that tomorrow. I'm trying to decide between some D'Addario EXL120+ (9.5 - 4.4) and some Ernie Ball Skinny Top - Heavy Bottom's (10 - 52). Right now I'm leaning towards the EBs.

I haven't been this excited since I got my Vox Night Train.

Those of you waiting for yours, have patience. It is worth the wait. Those of you that haven't ordered one yet better abuse the credit card and get with the program!

My CVC arrived from Sweetwater yesterday, I'm very impressed. I tuned it up, played it a bit, took it to rehearsal. I played it back to back with my MIM 60s Classic. The neck profile on the CVC feels a little flatter on the back. My 60s Classic has Duncan Vintage Stacks in it though, so no direct comparison possible on the sound. As it is, the MIM had more low end, but being able to separate that from different pickups and just a different guitar is impossible. The CVC was giggable, although I'll be putting .010's on it.

I neednt post my review again need I?

Oh what the heck!

First,The fretwork is great,Well seated frets no sharp edges, notes bend with ease all the way up the neck. The whole finish is great, very pro.I like the vintage split post tuners. The tuners seem to hold the tuning well ( I'll see how that changes when the strings are older!)The factory set up is spot on. Low action on the slim C shaped laquered neck makes it a fast easy play. I havn't had to adjust anything including the intonation which in itself is a first!. As to the strings,it plays and sounds really well with the 9's it came with, which is always a sign of a good guitar, though I will be trying some 10's later this week. In the shop I had to try it through a Line 6 combo, but I a/b tested it with other guitars. Suffice to say it impressed me enough to make me buy it. I was suprised to hear how much the hollow body affected the sound. Even when played unplugged it has that sproingy semi acoustic sound. When I got home I played it straight through my JCM 800 combo and yea it was good. I then fired up my trusty Boss GT3 and put it through its paces. Blues and country and rock and Jazz. Worked with them all. The Neck pick up is medium output and wouldnt suit 'fat' Tele fans. They should go for the bound Tele custom! Think 'Country R ock' or 'Blues' Ithas that classic Tele sound as does the Bridge pickup. Plenty of bite but not too edgy. The volume pot works for backing off the overdive I'm glad to see and the tone has a very usable range. Also there was no more feedback / microphonics than my other Tele's. Expecting it to do thrash metal would be very silly but its fine up to near 'Van Halen'ish' levels. I wouldnt go near that lovely glossy finish with a metal slide but when I put 10's on it i will try a glass one. No gig bag came with it. Luckilly I have no shortage at home. The slight Semi acoustic nature really makes it self apparent when fingerpicking. The Percusive attack sustain and clarity make it spot on for this. My old mate Banjo Bob is a fingerpicker and it certainly got him interested. I couldnt prise it off him for an hour!
So far I am very happy with the instrument. It makes a fine partner to my Fender 60's Classic. Contrasts with the Vm Tele Custon II. And Makes my '89 Korean Squier look positively brutish.... I think its a keeper!

Add me to the club, I got mine about 2 weeks ago up here in the frigid north. The dog sled took a little longer than UPS. No just kidding I ordered through my Ma and Pa and got the first one. Set up with 10s D'Addarios and ready to go. This is my first tele and second CV. I was blown away by the CV50s Strat, and now this one is just over the top.
They look real good together.

got back last night from jamming with my new squier cv thinline that i bought yesterday. i walked into the store with my mind set on the custom, but the thinline just had the sound i wanted. the thinline has a growl that i didn't hear on the custom.

LOOK:
the neck was nowhere near as pale looking as the pics i had seen. the wood grain on the body is as beautiful as in all the pics i've seen. seems like these are very consistent. pearl pickguard doesn't seem aged at all - it's pretty white. may try to swap for a yellowed one someday.

FEEL:
knobs are very sturdy on it. jack and jack cup seemed fine to me. neck is on the skinnier side, but only very slightly. i personally like this. being a thinline, it's a little neck-heavy, but i think this will be solved with a non-slick strap like i use for my basses. i'm new to the lightweight guitar world, so i think i'm still getting used to the overall weight.

SOUND:
this thing screams and growls. to me it's made for overdrive and distortion. it can take quite a bit of distortion before it starts humming too. if you blindfolded me and told me there were some humbuckers in it, i might believe you. hum is very minimal; seems like they did some good work on shielding. overall, i felt like it has a very zeppelin-like tonal quality.

OVERALL:
i really have no buyers remorse at all. it's the cheapest guitar i've bought new in years and it plays just as well as something i'd expect from a high end MIM. i don't know why anyone would get the fender MIM equivalent to this when the squier is available for half the price. i really just found myself at home with the guitar from the get-go.

Question to you guys out there: i usually put dunlop straplocks on all my guitars, but i wanted to make sure there wasn't something special i needed to do to ensure that the strap screws stay in place on this one. wood glue? should i avoid straplocks altogether? i'm worried about the hollow wood. opinions would be helpful.

Is anyone having issues with the position markers on the side of the CV 50s Tele Custom's neck?
Mine are very small and hard to see. I admit I use them a lot, while standing playing. I don't think you could see them in a gig situation.
May not be a problem for some.

I've just joined this forum but have bought the squier custom tele to play in the bars and pubs instead of my genuine 65 bound telecaster (worth too much to use in some places) I've had the squier for a couple of weeks now so will post a comparison between the two - funnily enough they are not so far apart and the squier looks really retro when I put the 65 ashtray cover on it.

Got my Tele Custom at the weekend. It's as gorgeous as the pics suggest and sounds fantastic too. It reminds me of my MIJ 80's Strat with the quality finish. It sounds really lively too with a proper Tele snap. Got it set up for slide at the moment which is really what I bought it for but it keeps begging me to turn it back into a 'proper' guitar! Definately a keeper, highly recommended.

It's got the triple "3" designation on it, so I believe that makes it a .033uF. It's Fender cousin (The '69 Tele Thinline RI) uses 1 meg pots with a cap that has a "503" designation on it, so I rekon thats a 0.05uF.

Been thinking about 250K pots and a .047/.050 cap to tame some of the highs this beast is capable of.
Haven't decided yet, as I'm starting to adjust to what is and what it has to offer tonally.

Ouch! I got one of each! Too good a deal. They are both really nice guitars. The CVC is beautiful. I've always wanted a bound tele. The pups are twangy but not too bright. Very ballsy. The neck is comfy and the rosewood is a nice match with the overall styling. The mint green guard is great, but I switched for parchment. Matches the binding better. I think a bigsby would be great. The Thinline is very light and the wood grain looks stunning. These CV thinlines all look different, however, so go down to your local dealer and pick the purtiest. I had a 69 Thinline RI and I think I like the CV Thinline better. Not quite as bright. Does anyone know the pot and cap values for these guitars? I think the Thinline has 250ks but can't remember where I saw that. Thanks.

The cap in the CVC is a 0,033 - i changed it to a Mallory 150's 0,047 µF / 250 V DC....cost me not even a dollar.First time i hear such a difference in changing a tone cap - positive!!!!!!Now the sound is a lot more smoother...just perfect for me.

Well, I just picked up a Custom. I finally got to play a couple today. They are one of the few truly 'hype worthy' products I have tried, and one of the few I have bought. I will have to post photos later. While I though the 50's CV was a very nice guitar, for some reason the 2 new models really blew me away.

I really like the Thinline as well and had been expecting to get it. I am normally not a rosewood neck fan, so I wasn't expecting to end up with the Custom. Especially considering not only is the neck rosewood, but also a bit thinner than I would normally like. But everything about the Custom just seems to to work together for lack of a better way to explain it lol. Taking that into account and the price, I think I will just adapt to the neck.

Well i succumbed and have the CVC. Cost $338 with tax $360.

first impressions are that this is a well made squire. Fret end are still sharp and need dressing, frets are quite low, not much meat in them. it needs a level, I chcvekced with the fret rocker and at least 4 frets are high.

took the neck off (first thing I do), neck pocket is crappy, chiseled with holes, but not as bad as some i have seen, it needs to be cleaned up.

Binding OK, some white spots around the neck join where there is no black finish, will have to touch them up.

Nice rosewood board, although it is painfully thin compared to other teles i have made in Asia.

hardware is OK, it's the first thing that will come off. Hate the bridge, have a USA tele bridge that won't just drop in, needs to be remounted new screw holes etc.

Plate for controls is also pretty flimsy, I have a heap of gotoh hardware laying about so that will solve the tinny hardware. The pings have to, I don't like Ping tuners, they are sticky and stiff.

Next I have a set of USA tele pickups lurking about already wired up with CTS pots and 47 cap...they go in !

I know, I should have just bought a USA tele, but I did have all the replacement parts hanging about on another Bound 62 body which i am going to sell - the neck pocket for that one is a little larger than a Tele (It's a Japanese something) The neck is really thick, like some of these guys prefer on here, so i will get rid of both of them.

Whoo, may not have to drill after all. i have a Gotoh, fine piece it is, but it's 3 hole. i took both bridges to the guitar store before buying the CVC, The USA tele and the Gotoh, both are way too long. Will see if I can find the Gotoh with the 3 holes, but i want modern saddles.

I got my CVC a couple of days ago. Bought it from Pfogl in the classifieds here on the forum , he couldnt get used to the neck.

He didnt mind shipping from the UK to Denmark , took almost a week , but arrived in good order.

I received it in the normal box that he had kept. I dont know what he had done to it , probably not much. The strings felt like 10 ´s , so I guess they were changed.

This one required a bit more setup than my CV´s , but again it didnt arrive directly to me. The nut slots were lowered a bit , bass side more than the treble side , not a lot , but even a tiny bit plays a big part of the action height especially on the first few frets and the intonation all the way up the neck.

Like on the CV´s , the overall height off the nut needs to be trimmed down , so the slots arent much deeper than the thickness of the strings.

Material of the nut looks to be different , mine is grey-ish ?

The action was quite high , but after putting on a set of my favourite 10´s and adjusting the truss rod , the saddles could be set way lower , and the action is now quite low.

The neck pu was set very high and sounded harsh to me , but after lowering it , it sounds sweet , creamy , bluesy , jazzy , I guess.
To balance the volume the bridge pu was set closer to the strings , and that fattened the sound up quite a bit.

I always seem to judge the sound of the neck pu pretty correctly here at home , but for me , the Tele bridge pu´s have to be heard with the band at volume. It sounds great here at home , no icepick at all, but I will have to wait and see if it cuts through the mix properly.
The pu´s definately sound different than the CV model , and so far I like them very much.

Not too sure I like the threaded saddles , havent had those before , but we will see. Intonation is pretty close , but Im not obsessive about that , others might feel different.
Overall , a beautiful guitar , plays and sounds great , well made.

Ya I'm surprised you bought one if it had the fret problems. Mine is the opposite. Some of the best finished frets I have seen on an import. Not a hint of sharp fret ends. The rest of the fit and finish, especially the binding, is fantastic too. Perfect in fact. The others in the store I picked up were as good. I had high expectations when I went shopping for one, and they totally delivered or else I wouldn't have ended up with one.

The only thing I don't know about is the neck pocket because I haven't had the neck off it yet. But from the posts on here, I am going to assume it may be a little rough looking.

It was the only one in town, if i had the choice of ten I would have been more picky. I am in the desert so frets go crazy with the dryness.

VIKING... "Material of the nut looks to be different , mine is grey-ish ?"

If the strings have been changed to 10's, he may have "lubed" the nut with a little grapite and then when wiping off any excess, smudged and "greyed" the nut surface.........just an observation. This has happened to me in the past.
And I too raised the bridge pup just a tad.....about 3 turns of the screws and that made a noticable and rewarding difference.
I changed out the stock threaded saddles for a set of Wilkenson Brass Compensated and that too made a great deal of difference.......a lot better sustain and of course setting the intonation is a snap.
I have 2 new CTS pots and a Oak-Grigsby 4-way switch that I am going to install asap.......and that should about do for my mods on the CVC.
GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY YOUR CVC!!!

Mine is grey also. it's cosmetic, i files a bit off the side and it's white underneath. I think it's just a coating to make the guitar look vintage. Whatever the nut is made of, it's going and a bone one is going in.

I thought about maybe the use of some graphite had colored the nut. If others have noticed the color , I guess Im not the only one. It looks to be a decent material , I dont have to have bone nuts on my guitars , as long as its not soft plastic , Im fine with it
Dont know if I will use compensated saddles , I dont think they are really needed , for me at least. Maybe I will be one of the few guys that orders non-compensated brass saddles , LOL

I have been trying to sell my 1997 MIA tele, inca silver rosewood fretboard. No serious bites.
A guy I know has had 2 CVC's since they came out. One still in the box(his under the bed git) He told me the other day he would give me my choice of the cvc's and 250.00 dollars. I need the money so I told him I would do it. So I should be CVC,n it soon. What was wild to me wa the one's I have tried in the local stores.(CV50,CVC and the CV thinline.) are all fantastic. I feel I wont be losing much as the 97 is an alder body rosewooded alnico 5 pup'd tele and so is the cvc. They sound to my ears pretty much the same on SCXD's and Blues Jr's(2 amps I have) so I am thinking that I get to pay a bill and still have a good tele. and it equates to 630.00 for my "97. thats perty good to me.

I am thinking the boxed one but will play both. The open one is flippin' gorgeous.
will update as it happens

I put 11's on my CVT as soon as I got it. Trust me, you'll be hard pressed to find any guitar that caves in under the pressure of 11s.

Anyone modified theirs yet? Sorry if I've missed it, I just skimmed through the thread real quick. I'm thinking different pickguard, maple neck, pickup swap, etc. I'm considering getting one, but I'd quite like a maple neck. I just really like maple necks on Fender style guitars! And I'm not sure if I'd like the glossy neck on the CVC.

I've also got a pickup from a Fender '62 Tele Custom Vintage Reissue lying around, that would probably go great in one of these!

Yes big time.

I put a Gotoh 6 saddle bridge on, i have the new control plate ready to go in cloth CTS orange drop..just got to get time to put the new pickups in.

looking for some high quality vintage tuners. I have a Classic players 60s Strat i could nick them off, but they are only Pings anyway. i am not familiar with vintage tuners as i usually put schallers on, I have about ten sets of older sets made in Germany but I really don't want to fill holes in the back of the headstock.AWW precious

Spent to upgrade $130 so far...hahahah..but IMO it's better than an MIM, and i actually LOVE the neck, i can't pickup another guitar, the necks feel so fat and cumbersome. I want to sell the Classic Player strat it's gorgeous, mint, but that 60s neck is so fat eeekk.

The only other neck i love are those on the two G and L strats i have, they are even finer and thinner, with a 12" radius to boot...heaven !

Having the chance to play them side by side through my SCXD. I believe the CV50 is more rock and roll and spanking(always has been. The CVC is very smooth and can do many things well. The CV50 takes to my OD/DIST pedals in a very interesting way. The CVC likes fuzz too though. They are both very good teles and different enough to make it cool to have both. I don't think I will miss my '97 at all.

Picked up S/N 0927201 yesterday.

Frets on mine are excellent. Nice and level; no sharp edges. The nut is white, not gray. I thought the nut was supposed to be bone, but it looks synthetic. At least is doesn't look plastic. The overall fit and finish is very good. There's a small gap on the bass side on the neck pocket (about three papers thickness), but not bad at all. I've had American Fenders that were much worse. The PU's are very good. I like them much better then the stock PU's that came in my American Standard. I haven't looked at anything inside, but the switch selector feels thin and flimsy so I'll change it at some point. I also think the threaded steel saddles give the bridge PU a little more twang than I care for so I may do something here as well, but I want to put some 10's on her first to see if that solves this issue.

I agree with everyone else that this guitar is a total winner. It will easily hold it's own against guitars costing much more. Like someone mentioned previously, there's allot of gear that gets hyped, but really doesn't live up to expectations. The Classic Vibes do and IMO this one is the best of the lot. I've owned them all except the duo and the TL.

Picked up S/N CGS0919960 and joined the CVC club.

I have two other very good Teles, a CV 50 that I bought about a year and half ago, and a Custom Shop 51 Nocaster. It's been interesting to compare them to the CVC.

Re. the CVC here is the good:
- it was well set up, right off the shelf
- beautiful fit and finish, nearly flawless as far as I can see. The finish and binding are very nicely done.
- likewise, the frets are beautifully finished, smooth, level, with absolutely no sharp or protruding fret-ends. That's quite unusual to find on a cheap guitar here in the Colorado Rockies where even $1500 Gibsons usually have protruding fret-ends.
- the wood appears to be be very high quality; the maple neck and alder body are very resonant, and the rosewood fretboard, while a bit thin, has a deep even chocolate grain. The CVC feels quite lightweight... probably about 7 lbs.
- the hardware is of decent quality, no complaints.
- the price is remarkable, given the overall quality of the guitar.

Really, a very attractive guitar and very playable.

The not so good? Well, compared to the CV 50, the CVC sounds a bit tamer, thinner, and more civilized. The CV 50 is noticeably gutsier sounding, and when played thru the same amp on the same settings, the CV 50 is louder. Now this is not necessarily a bad thing depending on the style of music, and is certainly a matter of taste... but in general I find I prefer the CV 50's sound overall. To me, it seems to have a bit more character, and it manages to get closer to the tone of the 51 Nocaster (which is kind of a holy grail guitar). In preferring the tone of the CV 50 over the CVC, I seem to be bucking the recent trend toward the CVC here on tdpri... but there you go. Some of us are Alnico III pickup guys and some of us are Alnico V's...

I think the two CV Tele models are in line with the character of the classic guitars that they're modeled after. The CV 50 being somewhat like the early 50's Teles: a bit snarly, and raw... great rock guitars. The CVC being somewhat like the 60s Teles: a bit thinner sounding and a tad more civilized... well suited for certain country styles. But both still very much Telecasters...

Although I personally prefer the CV 50 by a slight margin, I'm happy to have both. Where would the fun be if they sounded exactly the same?...

Good review Bubba I agree 100%.

The difference your hearing is mostly the bridge pickup the CV50's is 8.5k the CVC is 5.8k ohms so thats why it sounds a bit tamer.

The CVC needs 10's to really sound its best the CV50's isnt as particular about the strings it sounds good with any size strings but the CVC really needs the 10's maybe because of the lower output pickups?

I had to sell my CVC. I do however agree with Bubbacaster's assessment. I very much like my CV50's over the CVC. I am glad I still have the CV50. I noticed that the CVC was well suited to the smooth 70's style of distortion. I could get the late 60's through the 70's sounds with relative ease.(I guess duhh is in order, its's a 60's type git after all) The CV50's ability to put a little hair around each note is what I really enjoy. It works for me all around. I will most likely though when I have money someday( I hope,I hope) get another CVC,as there is certainly a place in the arsenal for its sonic charms and abilities.

The CVC is well suited,to my ears anyway to the country and jazz and smooth rock tones. We all know though that it can do it all as music especially rock has no rules. The CVC is an excellent guitar, regardless of price, maufacturer or country of origin. I see why it gets so much attention. I am quite bummed in having to liquidate mine. Consolation? I still have a few really great guitars, including and not limited to the CV50's Tele. Boo'Yaa baby.

I wonder what the '52 AVRI bridge pup ohm rating is, 'cause with both my CV50 and '52 AVRI on full volume (guitar pot) and the same settings on the amp, the CV50 bridge pup is louder. But I love the tone on both!

I agree. It's an interesting thing about "hair" around the notes... I've tried to explain this phenomenon to my wife (who doesn't play) and about the charm of certain guitars and amps and how they get that certain hairy-note sound when you're sitting in that sonic borderland between clean and dirty. She can kind of hear it, but doesn't really understand my enthusiasm about that particular sound.

Some guitars and amps achieve that sound easily, and have particularly sweet sounding harmonics overtones and richness of tone that emerge from that. To me it is one of primary charms of the electric guitar.

Best to just demonstrate the "hair" by playing a passage with the CVC. Then play the identical passage with the CV50 and note the slight edge garnered by the CV50. The subtle insinuation of, I guess a very slight distortion(hair) is easier heard than explained. I have noted it on a few guitars over the years to some who get it and some who don't. Its all in the ear of the beholder I believe anyway. Of course you can play sweet with high output pups and raunchy with low output pups so I suppose its all subjective.

The bottom line? The CV50 is a great guitar and coupled with the price one must play long and loud to drown out the possible pangs of guilt,Tee Hee.

Some more observations after having several days with my new toy. Like many have said, this guitar needs to have 10's with stock electronics, PU's, saddles, etc. Period! The 9's were just too twangy/elastic even when I tried a set of Gibson pure nickels.

From the factory the neck relief was set @ .010 and the action was 4/64" on all strings, which is what I use and what Fender recommends for a 9 1/2" neck radius. However, compared to my AS the neck on this one is thin (much thinner) and it seems to have more curve. Seems closer to the 7/12" found on the original 60's model IMO.

I went down the fretboard with the factory set-up and toward the middle of the neck some of the strings were just too low and were fretting out. I went over all the frets with a fine tooth comb and everything looked really good. Since the neck seemed to have more curve then my AS I decided to use the recommended set-up for a 7 1/2" radius with a little more neck relief (.012 vs .010) and I raised the first two strings up to 5/64" and everything fell into place. Some (not all) of the elastic feel and twang was gone and now I can hit every fret with no buzz and can actually play a decent cowboy D chord without pulling the strings out of tune.

I'm not sure how consistent these necks are, but if any of you have a similar experience I recommend you try this. Mine sounds like a different guitar.

- The tuners are pretty lame. Mine doesn't stay in tune nearly as well as I would like. They're passable, but thats about it. If I were more than a home winker I'd have to replace the tuners for sure. BTW, they also work much better with 10's.

- I still haven't opened her up to have a look at the pots, caps, etc., but I suspect they're run of the mill considering how thin the PU selector is.

- I don't care for the threaded steel saddles. I didn't like them on the 62 RI I had and I don't like them on this one either. I think they're contributing to the thin sound. I'm just trying to decide if if I want to go with a set of compensated brass saddles or just get one of the newer style flat bridges with individual saddles. If anyone has tried both I'd like to hear your observations.

- The bridge PU is just way to thin sounding for me. I like the neck PU and it might actually be very good with different saddles/electronics.

Bottom line; this is still just an incredible bargain. The body alone is worth the price of admission. I thought at first I could live with it stock, but when I compare it to my AS with RS guitar works electronics and Nocaster PU's it's exposed. But, it's such a nice guitar that I've decided to do what it takes to make it a real keeper.

Someone mentioned they were gong to try some PU's from an AS. I have the original PU's from mine as well as the electronics, so I'll probably drop them in this weekend. However, I didn't really care for those PU's either, so I'd like to hear the observations from anyone who has tried these, or other PU's for that matter.

I just wanted to share. Of course YMMV. Just my opinions.

Me again. I bought a Fender branded bridge and brass saddle assembly for my CVC. However, after I compared the stock bridge with the Fender I decided to use the stock bridge and just change the saddles. The stock bridge was finished much better, was noticeably thicker and overall of better quality. I have no idea what either of them were made of and I didn't bother to even try the Fender to see if it sounded different.

Now for the good news. The copper saddles made a HUGE difference. I can't believe how much the stock saddles effected everything about this guitar. The twang is gone and it now has a more substantial sound. Both PU's with the stock electronics still in place sound great and I no longer have a desire to change the bridge PU. The really great improvement and one that was quite unexpected is that it now stay in tune just fine. I can now set the guitar up @ 4/64" relief on all strings measured at the 17th fret with zero buzz anywhere on the neck.

I thought it would mellow the sound and bit and take care of the elastic feel, but everything else was totally unexpected. I'm a happy camper. Cheap fixes are great! :0)

Ernie Ball pure nickel 10's and brass saddles. That's all this guitar needs IMO. As always, sound is subjective and YMMV, but it worked for me.

Jack

I thought the same think, but with this guitar the stock saddles just didn't work for me. Pseudo effect? Who knows. But the brass took away what one guy called a sitar sound of the higher strings.

BTW, I've also fell out of love with the PU's. I don't have a problem with the tone, but it's the low output the bothers me. They actually sound really good. I have a set of Nocasters that aren't being used that I'm going to install. I'll probably go ahead and install some CTS pots and a switch while in there. No problem with pot or switch, but I've used CTS' for years and they've been really reliable for me.

I'll end up having as much in this as my AS by the time I'm finished. :0)

Hey I am in the club, got a thinline yesterday pics to follow.
Do not know what it weighs maybe 4-5 pounds at the most.
All thinlines do not have enough volume to play as a good acoustic. They are not designed as such. They are louder than a solid body and do have a pleasent tone unplugged. But they are made to be played through an amp.Thats why they have pickups and electronics.

I installed the Nocasters plus replaced the electronics with the set that came out of my American Standard; big improvement IMO. This is really a great guitar, but I wish they would make the neck a little beefier. I'm used to the neck on my AS and it's a big adjustment going back and forth.

Anyone else do some mods?

I picked my CVC up a couple of weeks ago. I had seen them here on the TDPRI back in January when they were first released at NAMM and wanted one something fierce... finances and timing were such that I had to wait. I walked into GC looking to try one of the new LP Studio's with P-90s (having forgotten about the CVC). Of course, they had none... and I had an hour plus to kill. So I wandered about.

I came around the corner and there on the stand was a CVC. I almost started shaking when I figured out what it was and knew of the reviews people have been giving it. I tried it out through a couple of Fender amps. The bridge pickup was thin and weak and nowhere near as loud as the neck... so I knew it was just a case of adjustment. It played so nice and looked so classy.

I left to go take care of business, but called them back and asked them to hold it for me. A few minutes later they called back and said they had one in a box, was I interested in that one? Well, duh!

So I finished up what I needed to do and drove back… as the headstock cleared the box and I saw the figure on it… well, I was pretty sure which one I was gonna grab. I played it for about half an hour or so and knew it was going to come home with me. The pickups were very twangy and the string tone was tasty! The neck is thinner than any other guitar I own, but I am finding it pleasant just the same. I don’t know that I’d want to do bar chords all night long with it, but for leads and tasty rhythm stuff, it’s comfortable enough! The back of the neck and headstock have some beautiful figure, the fretboard is nice and even and dark. The fretwork is spectacular. There is only one fret end that even comes close to being exposed… a second or two with a small file and it’ll be golden. I like the lower vintage height frets! The two piece body has nicely matching grain and a nice fade to the burst. The finish is flawless (maybe a tad thick?), the binding is beautiful, the nut is actually cut perfectly, and the tuners hold a tune for days.

The 3 tone Sunburst and double binding have me referring to this one as the Gentleman’s Telecaster.

After playing it a bit, Lance was over and suggested a height change to the bridge pickup, which worked to bring it in a bit stronger with a tad more bite and edge to the notes. But of course, this meant my neck pickup was too weak… pulled the pickguard, threw a copper shield on the back of it and raised the neck pickup to even the volume… now, it’s beautifully jazzy tele goodness! In it’s original lower position it had a nice piano-like tone on the strings with a very vintage-like clarity typical of low output pickups. Now, it’s a bit creamier. But as mentioned earlier, it is one of my quiet guitars… Much lower output than my LP Traditional! LOL.

This guitar get’s a beautiful Cars / Police tone and takes well to fuzz, overdrive, etc. Sounds nice clean with my Carbon Copy into the Deluxe!!! And the blackface and tweed voicings on the SCXD sing nicely! I’ve been really enjoying playing different blues and rockabilliy stuff on her.

I’m trying 10’s now (DR Pure Blues). I may go back to some Pure Nickel 9’s just for S’s & G’s. I like the 10’s, but was enjoying the slinkiness of the 9’s as well. 10’s and 11’s are what’s on everything else… but, it’s always fun to have options!

I would like to swap out the switch and find some 60’s style knobs with a heavier knurl. I also have a new pickguard with a cutout for a humbucker to test out some things as well.

Anybody got a good quality 4-way switch to trade for an Oak 5-way strat style switch?

Bottom lines is, this is one heck of a deal. It’s a great guitar at twice the price. It plays well, sounds good, and has a very classy look. This one might be the first Telecaster I keep for more than a year or two. Something tells me these will be worth a behind-load in 10-20 years.

Hey there mates,

Another new Tele addicted that just got kicked in the face by these Custom fellas.

As I am such a young guy, and money is earned with hard work, I couldn't just spend that much money on a Fender, not even the MIM ones.

So I was looking for a good looking and not-so-expensive Tele and fell in love with this one.

So far so good and I am always smiling at it when I play it, it really got my heart and soul.

It plays well like my father's old Fender Tele, and it looks just as nice.

I will post some pics of it later, it got some nice wood figure on the body, it kind of flow with the blend of the sunburst, awesome, got me into it more than my Gibson. :)

One thing that stands for me so far is the middle position. It has a nice acoustic sound to it, very useful.

So far, I am digging it, best bang for the buck.

Have to have a picture or I don't own it, right:wink:

Couldn't resist the urge. Sorta backed into it, because there was an eBay BIN/OBO auction for a new CVC. Submitted what I thought was an unrealistically low bid (and well below the regular GC/MF discount price, considering it also came with free UPS shipping) and then found out this AM I won it.

Besides, looks like my main man is playing somethin' kinda similar these days as well....

It's amazing, you know...I was looking at MIM standards today in the sunburst, then picked up the CVC, and couldn't believe how much nicer the woodgrain shows through in the CVC! The finish seemed glossier, 'prettier'. I saw both the thinline and this one in my travels today, and think I need to return to the stores and give them a closer look. I'm looking for my first electric guitar...love the look of the thinline, but have to hear it.

The only problem I noted with the CVC I looked at today is when you looked close you could see just a touch of the cutout in the guitar when you looked next to the bridge plate...like they over-cut or didn't center the bridge plate exactly perfect?

I might pair my first tele up with a Super Champ XD...sound like a reasonable combo? I'm dying to learn some 'chicken pickin' and ~try~ to make some sounds like Waylon Jennings :-)

Well I'm not in the club........quite yet. Have looked at several CVC's but had not pulled the trigger. Drove to a shop yesterday about 60 mi away to look at another but it had a very noticable dark spot on the front of the body. Kinda ticked me off because I called the shop before making the trip and they assured me it had a "flawless beautifully grained 2 pc. center matched body". NOT EVEN CLOSE!

Well I was a bit bummed, but got home and there was a MF 20% off coupon in the mail. Usually these don't apply to Fender, Squier, etc. but I called anyway. The MF rep was very pleasant and said he would "check" - got right back to me and said he would give me the 20% off a CVC so I ordered it. Came to about $303, so I'm pretty happy about that! I've wanted a CVC to keep my CV50's company since they were announced. Of course, with my luck it will probably arrive with something wrong, but at least I can send it back and get another - even paying return shipping, still a good deal.

Just checked MF website and it does state that the coupon does not apply to Squier, but I guess it pays to ask. So if anyone else is thinking about a CVC (or other CV model) and has a coupon.........call them!

Hi all.

Just picked up a CVC this evening and I couldn't be more pleased.

Actually, I was going to buy the CV50, but once I got to the store I couldn't take my eyes off the Custom. I wasn't sure about the rosewood fingerboard as I was looking for maple. However, after playing it, I really liked it. Feels very smooth and looks fantastic on the Custom body.

I have a CV 50's and love it. Had to try a CV Thinline at the store the other day - it was extremely light and very woody sounding with a little honk thrown in - i.e. sounded great! Serious GAS now and it's only been a few months since the purchase of CV 50's.

Well,, here she be.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp36/Ric360girl/July272010jpg.jpg

I picked it up at GC on this past Sunday. It plays like a dream. I must have gotten lucky with the pickups. I've tried out several CV Thinlines before, and they sounded too spikey to me, even with the amp's treble turned down. GC had two CV Thinlines, and the first one I tried out, sounded the same as the other ones I tried out several months ago - ice picky/spikey sounding. I almost didn't even try out the second one, feeling that it would sound the same, and as a result, be a waste of my time. But I plugged it into a lame-o Marshall MG-15, and it sounded pretty good. I plugeed it into a Vox VT-100, with 2x12s, ran it through the amp models, and said to myself, "yeah!, now we're talking!" Grind and chime with clarity, without being shrill!

I feel kind of guilty for not playing my Ric 360 lately. But I will admit this, the Ric's Hi-Gain pickups (which are wound to 11.8K ohms DC resistance), are louder than the CV Thinlines. I'm torn a little bit. I'd like additional pickup output. Raising the bridge pickup will help in this regard, but will not give it the output (even with the 11s I put on the Thinline), of my Ric 360's pickups (not only that, but if I raise the pickups too much, the magnetic pull from the polepieces will start to kill string vibration). Changing the pickup will solve the output issue, but I may be messing with success (the nice tone), if I do so. I'm going to mull this over before I consider a pickup swap.

I have a question about the cavity underneath the pickguard of the custom. Does it only have room for a tele style neck pickup? I bought two vibramate tele bridges and they don't quite improve the guitars I have them on and I think they might do one of the CV tele's some justice. As it stands I'm looking to get rid of one of them as it is.

An update on my CVC. My pics are posted pages back in the thread. Since I got it, I started gigging again with my band. I have had the opportunity to try it at a few jams (not a show yet).

My band plays a mix of Rock n' Roll (Dave Edmunds type stuff) mixed with punky rock (Supersuckers) to some crazy surf stuff that even has some metal elements. The CVC in stock form is probably not the first guitar you'd associate with that kind of music but it seems to work out great. I have still kept it completely stock.

The biggest surprise to me is likely the tuners. Looking at them I never thought they would hold up to what I am playing, and they work great! The guitar goes from my air conditioned apartment to our outdoor shed of a rehearsal space which is literally like a sauna this time of year. I play the hell out of it, and rarely have to tune it because it holds tune fine.

I keep looking for some excuse to tinker with something on the guitar, and it never gives me one lol. It's been about 5 months now, and I think it's just going to remain stock.

Late at night in July I put in a late night ebay best offer on a CV thinline. I was shocked and embarrassed when my wife told me "you won that guitar you bid on"

For 295 shipped the guitar was sent to me in a tweed case. It was a total impulse buy. I was very happy to find that the neck was slim. I was going to flip it if the neck was thick. I put on a leather strap with grolsh straplocks

This guitar is a keeper

I'm considering both of these models and tried both out today. I should mention that I don't actually know how to play yet and will be learning. Both sounded nice (and felt nice) with the Thinline sounding a little "woodier" like EllenGtrGrl mentioned. Other than, it was a little hard to tell as I was in a noisy music store.

I guess my question is--what do you discern to be the primary difference in sound between these two models? Thanks.

Member of the club as of yesterday. After moving on from all the heartache with the fit and finish of my Baja (which had finish irregularities), this arrived at my local store. I watched the salesman remove it from the box, and it was perfect straight out of the box (and almost in tune)!! I am astounded at the quality of the finish. Because it's a Thinline, it's light to begin with. I thought it sounded good, even on the roland cube I tried it out on. The neck is thinner than the Baja, but that's okay. Fretwork is immaculate.

I though you guys would like to see some closeups of "the details" for the record. I've never lusted after a mahogany body, but I have to say that this thing is really pretty. Can't wait to play it through a "real" amp.

That little area where the bridge route shows at the right hand side of the bridge isnt a flaw in workmanship just about every vintage style Tele has that. All the 52ri's have it the CV50's does too and many many other Teles.

... but first I need to know how easy it is to switch out the pickguard on the CV Thinline. Are Fender pickguards a perfect retrofit? (I suspect not.) Does anyone make one?

I just photoshopped together a Thinline with a BWB pickguard... and I've decided that I need one. (The mother-of-toilet-seat is the classic look, of course, but I want something a bit more subdued.)

WilburBufferson
August 27th, 2010, 10:36 AM
Someone asked whether the CV Thinline is routed for a HB... Well, it isn't. Thought you might like to see under the hood.

One thing I will say about it though -- it sure is fun to play. I don't know what it is about it. It's snappy or something. But you can't pound away on it -- I find that it does tame you a bit. Will see if that statement holds once I get a heavier gauge on it .

Question: other than the body and the RW board and tinted neck on the CVC, aren't the specs the same for the CVC and the CVT? I am building a telemaster, and need a donor guitar. I was originally thinking of stripping down a baja (keeping all but the body) but I am now thinking of using a CV instead. Not sure if it will be a CVC or if I will just get another CVT. **I am mainly interested if the necks are the same shape/profile** Thanks.

I put an Electrosocket on all my Teles. I have a CV50 and it wasn't long before the output jack came loose. And a CVC I played in a store already had a loose jack. Even with the expensive Teles it seems like it is only a matter of time before the jacks loosen up. Electrosocket is a must IMO. I've never had a problem with my switch but I really can't speak to that.

Alright guys, I've been messing around with the cvc. I cleaned/restrung, changed out the jack for a switchcraft, installed an electrosocket, and changed the strap buttons for gotoh oversized. It's been mentioned that everything is usa spec which may be true except the jack did not fit the electrosocket, the switchcraft had to be put in. I'm thinking maybe just some of the electronic parts are not MIA/MIM spec. The only other thing I may upgrade is the switch.

Me either, I couldn't get along with my Am std strat so I got rid of it and got the cvc. I had a cv 50s strat at one point when I had the Am Std and I didn't want to admit but the cv strat was every bit as good of a guitar as the USA model. It was actually lighter and more fun to play to be honest. Some of the electronics are better quality on the american guitars as well as the finish, not in execution but quality of material. Not because the finish on the cv is bad at all, just seems a tad bit more "plasticy". These are by far the absolute best quality electrics I've ever come accross in this price range.

Hello guys!!! Exelent material up here!

I own a Fender TC-90 and i would like to customize it a little, the idea is to make it sound more like a thinline 69...

You may say, why not buying a 69? or a classic vibe? well first of all i like the TC-90 aspect, the second, the 69 does not come to Argentina (where i live), and the thirth, id like to make a very telecaster unique one

So...as for the neck pickup i thought in making a new pickguard and make the hole for a traditional tele pickup, maybe a "texas special neck pickup"??

The problem is the bridge pickup, do you suggest any idea?? I read about a guy who said it can be made a single coil tele pickup in the p90 hole, is that possible?

Do you suggest any p90 pickup that can sound more than a telecaster vintage sound??

Please answer:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Hi, CV Thinline owners - I'm seriously looking at one of these, as a gigging beater, but being on The Rock can't try one. My main concern is the neck; I don't like skinny necks.

My No 1 and No2 guitars have 0.96 to 1" and 0.89 to 0.96 - does anyone have any calipers to measure the depth at 1st and 12th on their CV Thinline?

Also, my #1 is a Galuszka CS 50's Tele; whilst there is much praise for the quality and value for money of the CV Thinline, is this all relative? Will the different Quality Control stand-out to me as a daily CS player? Comments from anyone who owns guitars of both types will really help me.

Hi guys, 1st post here and a big thanks to all TDPRIers for guiding me towards the right direction
I received my CVC yesterday and I'm 100% happy with her. Bought it online (from Dolphin Music IK) so I was a bit nervous but the guitar arrived in perfect shape, it's a 2 piece (the two pieces are very nicely fit together), nice grain, perfect set up and I didn't spot any flaws.
I'm not experienced with Teles but I couldn't stop playing this one.

Just a question for those who changed their strings to 0.010's: Did you have to a adjust the truss road? What tool do I need?

How does the neck on these new Squiers compare to Fender necks?

The reason I ask is 'cause my old Standard Squire had 40mm width measured at the nut, although the website said 41.3.

Thanks tdu. I hope this will be the case with mine too. Still puzzled about the tool I need in case I want to make any micro adjustments with the truss rod (all my other guitars have different types of truss rod 'nut')

In the meantime I'm enjoying my CVC as it is (the 9s won't stay for long though).
Did I mention its weight? ~3.3Kg (that's about 7.3 lbs)
All the qualities most people report about them are here too (finish, frets, decent pots, tight neck pocket, nice PUs, relatively low hum) but I also notice something I really like: very musical feedback when you play moderately loud with some healthy gain on top.

EDIT: nevermind about the tool question. Truss rod & saddle wrenches were in the box but I didn't notice when I opened it

I did...250k. Alpha pots by the way. Not exactly great quality, but better than a lot of the garbage that has come in many of the fender and squire imports in the past. I think the one thing we can count on going bad is the switch. I have never had one of this type that hasn't gone bad within a few months. But maybe those are even improved, who knows. My new thinline is so amazing i don't care anyways. I'll replace all electronics if i have to, doesn't matter. the guitar itself is a thing of beauty and perfection in function. What a steal, even if it came with no electronics and pickups !

I've had my CV Thinline for a week now, and I'm super impressed.

I went to Sam Ash and the local mom and pop to try out CVs. Both stores had one of each. The thinline at the the mom and pop was the winner. I was expecting to like the CVC, but it was too thin sounding. The Thinline had a richer tone, and I liked the neck better than the CV 50s. I can get a nice growl from the bridge pickup, and the neck never sounds muddy. In between has a stonesy grind with some gain, nice jangle clean. Pickups have the output I was looking for: a little less than the P90s in my LP. They're staying.

So far all I've done is put 10s on it. The action is nice, neck shiny but not sticky. It's got the easiest vibrato of any guitar I've ever owned. I think one fret is a tad high: I can hear a little buzz only in the one spot.

My back loves the weight. It feels weightless compared to my LP.

The maple is awfully pale. Would leaving it in the sun help it darken?

The tuners hold it in tune pretty well.

I thinking about changing the pickguard to tort. I just don't care for pearl.

I wonder about brass saddles, but I like the tone the way it is, so I'll probably leave them.

The jack is starting to make noise already. I'll have to swap it. I will probably go ahead and pull the strap buttons and add a little toothpick and glue to the holes, then put them back. Every guitar I've owned has had at least one fall out.

Thinking about putting in a 4-way switch while I've got the guard off. Never had one before.

I've been through a series of "second" guitars over the past couple of years: MIM Strat, Sheraton II, Pro Jet. I think the Thinline might be here for the long haul.

Anybody put a Bigsby on one yet? It's the only thing I miss when I'm not playing my P90 LP.

Yeah, the pickguard on the CV Thinline is definitely an issue. I did a Photoshop mockup to see how it would look with a black or a B/W/B pg:

http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-technical/230755-classic-vibe-thinline-pickguard-template-mini-humbucker.html#post2712728

The more I look at vintage Thinlines, however, the more I like the mother-of-toilet-seat. It's a bit gaudy, but it's the classic look. (And it's nowhere near as gaudy as the old Protone Bordellocaster...)

I did the same mockups you did and like the tort best, although it's really hard to tell as the color of the wood and the tort varies so much. I wish I could hold tthe guard up to the guitar and not have to order online.

And of course there's the "will it fit" issue. No one seems to have reported finding an off-the-rack PG that fits the CVT yet.

I can live with the pearloid; it looks better in hand than on a stand. But part of me also has to put my scent on anything new I buy.

As I wondered about the neck; will sunlight age the PG as well? I more yellowed pearl would look better, methinks. I could just find a sunny window and set the guitar there for a week.

Well, here's a guy who did a scientific (sort of) test of the sunlight theory:

Doesn't look too promising. You may have to go with a stain or tinted nitro. (Some people have had luck with shoe polish?)

I did...250k. Alpha pots by the way. Not exactly great quality, but better than a lot of the garbage that has come in many of the fender and squire imports in the past.

This is something you hear about all the CV guitars, but I did notice something the other day: the mini-pots on my CV60s Strat turn *far* more smoothly than the pots on the high-end Fender Strats in my local store (which may well have been full-sized). No comparison. Maybe this is an anomaly -- those could have been particularly gritty Fenders, or mine might be a particularly well-lubricated CV -- but I'm not sure that these are in fact such low-quality pots. I haven't had a chance to spend much time with the CVC or Thinline, but it would be interesting to compare the feel to Fender Teles. (This isn't the only way to judge quality, of course: but the difference was kind of remarkable.)

I've also found the Kluson-style tuners on this Strat rock-solid. The CVC I looked at seemed to have the same ones. The jack on the CVC did look a bit cheap, relative to the CV60s -- in fact, the build quality of the Strat was a notch better in general (especially hardware), but the real measure is to compare them to Fender models. These are ridiculously well-made guitars, period -- never mind the price.

I'm pretty sure I have a CV Thinline in my near future.

I couldn't resist modding mine. SD bridge PU, Filtertron neck, and RS bridge saddles. Installed 500k pots.

Ok, I've been drooling over the CVC and CV Thinline for awhile. Unfortunately, I can't try one out in person. I prefer the look of the CVC (it would also look nice next to my CV 60s strat w/ mint pickguard). However, from a video comparison on youtube I think I like the sound of the Thinline better. I was also thinking that a Thinline is significantly different from the other Teles I have (even though I don't have a Tele with a rosewood fretboard, nor one that is bound), so it might make more sense to purchase a Thinline. I'm definitely more attracted to the aesthetics of the CVC -- I find the fretboard on the thinline a tad on the pale side in the pictures I've seen. Now, I may just end up buying both eventually. But for the short term I'd like to get the one deemed "most essential". Does anyone on this forum have both guitars, and if so, could they offer up advice as to which one is overall more satisfying as far as sound and feel? From what I've read on this forum, it seems the Thinline may win in a side-by-side sound comparison. But I'd like to hear more. Please feel free to persuade me. Thanks!

P.S. Does anyone else wish they'd make a CV Jazzmaster/Jaguar/Mustang?

I couldn't resist doing a couple of mods to my CVC either.
a) 4-way Fender switch and
b) 51 CS Nocaster pickups

of course I restrung her with 0.010s.

The original pups were not bad but with the new ones it's really something else. Absolutely recommended.

Soon to be modded with a '72 reissue pickup and brass saddles (which I'm going to take a file to, to match the chamfered ones).

Electrosocket and switchcraft jack ordered too.

Well, I've had the CV Thinline since I've posted pictures in this thread, and the guitar has been seeing daily use. I have to say that this is one of the best guitars I've ever bought. The thing takes a pounding and stays in tune better than all of my other guitars. If only the neck was a tad thicker, it would be a 10/10. I would sell off my herd and get another one just to give it a brother. But one is plenty!!

Well, I got my CVT two days ago. Pix to follow. Observations (none of this is new, probably):

~It's gorgeous. My other axe is a beatup and super customized 1995 MIM James Burton. It is a workhorse, not a beauty, but I love it. This new guitar is so pretty it takes some getting used to.

~It is perfectly put together. I'm particularly impressed with the fretwork.

~As many have said, I wish the neck was thicker. Any of you who have played a MIM James Burton will know that it's significantly thicker. That's what I'm used to. I don't intend to replace it (don't have the $$ for one thing), at least not yet, but I wish it was more along the lines of the CS nocaster.

~It sounds very different than my #1. I like the stock pups, and it does Chimey/Twangy better than my #1, which has a Fralin Blues Special at the bridge. I'll live with them for a while before changing anything

~Has anybody noticed a tremendous increase in volume from the Middle Switch position to the Bridge? It's almost like stepping on a boost pedal. I suppose I could even this out by adjusting the heights of the Pups. But I kind of like it. Play rhythm in the middle position, switch to the bridge for my screaming leads. Agian, I'm going to resist my modding gene and just play it for a while.

~I'll put in some 500K CTS pots and do a Fezz Parka/ 50's witring mod (I always do that- It just make the volume pot so much more useful IMO. In the standard wiring, It's al most like the only settings are Full volume and off)

This is truly the golden age of cheap guitars. This thing is an unreal value. But you guys know that already.

I'll post some pix later.

My CV Tele Custom came yesterday. Picked it up for $329.99 After reading many reviews, I took the plunge. Boy am I glad I did. I don't care if it's made on Mars. When I'm not playin' her, I'm staring at her. I do have to say I already have some mods in the works; Fralin 2% over stock in the neck and 5% on the bridge, p'ups. I spoke with Lindy yesterday and went with his recommendation. He hasn't let me down yet! Next up, a 4-way Oak-Grigsby switch and some Glendale Intone "Old School" saddles and I'm done. I'll post back when those are complete. But for now.....s/n CGS 1007348

Here is mine, finally picked it up (the only one that came to the store).
Must say it plays beautifuly, better than expected, even after reading all these posts.

Quick question for the Club:

Vladimir's picture makes the middle 'ring' of the sunburst look much less orange than in other pictures I've seen--compare his photo to Tonebro's just above. More like 2-tone sunburst, which I prefer.

Is it just a trick of the light/camera angle, or are there CVCs out there with a more subdued burst?

Nah, I think it's my lack of skills with setting up the lighting. I'll try to post a few more pictures over the weekend.

No worries--didn't want to go nuts driving around town looking for CVCs with 2-tone-like 'burst if they didn't actually exist.

Can I join, even if my CVT doesn't get here until next week? Reading through this thread, I'm afraid the new CVT might woo me away from my recently-completed "MIM Esquire". I put a lot of thought and work into getting that guitar right, and then TDPRI drops a free CVT on me.

Did somebody say the neck poistion is routed for a Strat pickup? Seems too good to be true. I recently fell in love with a buddy's Fralin Blues Special Strat neck pickup, and found a pair of them on FleaBay. I've been resisting putting one in my Esquire (Face it, an Esquire with a neck pickup just isn't an Esquire). But if I could find somebody to make me a Thinline guard cut out for a Strat pickup....

tonebro
November 20th, 2010, 06:03 PM
I just read Rich's reply so, maybe this will help...
It's not cut for a Strat p'up, it's cut for a humbucker! Someone was thinkin,' there! Excellent craftsmanship, too.
The p'up cavity is 3 1/12" long, by 1 11/16" wide, 13/16" deep. The channel cut for the wiring is 5/8" wide, 13/16" deep, so no issues there.
I've got Lindy's Stock Tele, 2% over in the neck and a Blues Special in the bridge, 5% over. Best Tele sound I've had yet and with a 4 position switch, #3 position is in series and that's a nice treat....becoming my favorite choice. She also has a Fender bridgeplate and Glendale comp. brass saddles. Too much fun!

Tonebro,

Are you sure you're talking about the thinline? I have heard others say there's definitely no humbucker route in the neck position. No biggie for me though. This guitar already has enough complexity and growl that I honestly have no need for an HB. I got rid of a guitar with two buckers to get the CVT and came away with a beefier crunch tone. Go figure!
