Squier Telecaster customs(dual chrome humbuckers) clubbassplyr53 January 9th, 2010, 12:26 PM Was just wondering if there is a club on here for Squier Telecaster customs(dual chrome humbuckers)?I noticed there is one for Custom II with P 90's.Thanks! Tom Tim Armstrong January 9th, 2010, 01:12 PM There is now! note: I changed the title of this thread! Tim jrich99 January 9th, 2010, 01:21 PM I'm in. I bought one from Musician's Friend and recieved it the day before Chirstmas. A nice feeling, sounding, and playing guitar, but it hasn't gotten the amount of use it deserves because I'm borrowing a Gibson Les Paul Custom. bassplyr53 January 9th, 2010, 08:27 PM Thank ya kindly,Tim.I appreciate it.That is amazing Jrich99,I ordered one from MF,and I got it also the 24th.I haven't been able to put it down since. It plays great! Tom theGecko71 January 9th, 2010, 08:54 PM I used to have one of these and liked it quite a bit. When I built my Esquire I actually used the neck from my Squier and put the Standard Tele neck I'd bought for the Esquire on the Squier. But then I sold the "modified" Squier to fund the buying of an amplifier. I miss that guitar, but at least I still have the neck! Fearnot January 23rd, 2010, 08:47 PM I bought one of these a few weeks back and really like it... I'm reserving 'love' until I can get it setup properly. I will say that the neck feels great, and I think the bridge pickup sounds great... but the neck pickup is really muddy. I had a set of Mighty Mite Vintage Buckers laying around, dropped those in and guess what; they sound exactly the same! Nice bridge, muddy neck. In fact, they look exactly the same. (Big waxy bottoms.) I'm guessing they are the same. So I'm auditioning ideas for a new neck pickup. Or I may swap in a set of HB-sized P-90s. We'll see... hankgittar March 11th, 2010, 10:43 PM Just got mine last week from music123 - 33yr Tele man, needing a humbucker. I'm seriously looking @ WRHB repros (standard HB size) from curtisnovak.com, or Duncan 59 set - ideas? Also, mine came with great neck, muddy p/ups, crazy go nuts intonation. Heavy too, but fine for the HB sound I'm seeking. CDR! April 7th, 2010, 06:47 PM can I join? this is my Go Too Guitar, I did not let the word Custom sit there niether the Custom was a statement I couldn't just let it it be with those chrome humbuckers so first round of Customization I got/had two Dimarzio Super Distortions in the b and n, then As for the second round a Dimarzio Tone Zone in the b and Fred in the Neck. jrich99 April 7th, 2010, 07:03 PM Thank ya kindly,Tim.I appreciate it.That is amazing Jrich99,I ordered one from MF,and I got it also the 24th.I haven't been able to put it down since. It plays great! Tom That was a great special to be able to get them for 200 bucks. And for those with pickup concerns: Mess around with the height. I ended up lowering my neck pickup substantially and raising the bridge a little on the treble side so with the tone full on it sounded more like a tele. electricjr July 24th, 2010, 12:23 PM Hi, new to tdpri, 10 years+ viewer (so much help in so many areas! I just got my Squier Custom, agree with most on the stock pu's, but got some GFS Classic Alnico II's on the way. Forgive me if I'm violating protocol (can't figure out how to start a new thread)-Mine's got a very narrow string width at the nut, I definitely want to go wider. What would be the maximum string spread to work on this neck, and would I be able to find it in a pre-cut nut? I'm comfortable with this neck in general, but may go with something with a wider width at the nut at some point (possibly a classic vibe 50s or thinline). henry b August 1st, 2010, 01:51 PM I,ve got one also but am finding it too heavy to handle , so I will be swaping it for a Thinline with a 24 3/4" scale . Adam S August 2nd, 2010, 09:22 AM The lack of pics in this club is disturbing! henry b August 2nd, 2010, 10:44 AM Here,s mine. markothefish September 3rd, 2010, 04:31 AM http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs026.snc1/4276_1030613940374_1676144531_50563_5766201_n.jpg I love mine . I use it for all our Rolling Stones tunes , I keep her tuned to Open G . I'm in the market now for some different pickups for it , I can't keep well enough alone . GFS has a set of Fender style split humbuckers I'd like to try on there . http://www.guitarfetish.com/thumbnail.asp?file=assets/images/products/visphuclfest.jpg&maxx=0&maxy=300 musicalmartin September 3rd, 2010, 05:02 AM A pair of Tonerider Rocksongs will really spice this guitar up .I put a set in my Dot and the improvement was immediate and transformed the guitar at a very rearsonable cost. hankgittar September 5th, 2010, 10:11 PM I finally got my setup by a real luthier (i.e., not me!) and then put in a set of zebra GFS Fat Pats. Surprisingly balanced & versatile, tone controls cover a lot of ground. Kept electronics stock otherwise (tech says "ain't broke, is quiet). Using it more & more, getting used to the weight - I use it when I would use an LP if I played them. Still under $300 ... But they're great! Installed them in my thinline, I really like the clean tones that you could get in the 2nd position. I play a bit of fusion and it works well with that too. Just pair em with 500k pots  electricjr September 13th, 2010, 12:29 PM I went and got a CV thinline neck, popped that on there and it's a great match (remedied my earlier problem with the narrow nut on the stock neck). Also, after trying out some GFS Alnico IIs, returned 'em (didn't have the clarity or sparkle I was expecting) and found a great deal on some Dimarzio 36th Anniv PAF's. After ruining 2 new CTS pots with a too hot soldering gun, I wired it up with 1 vol, 1 tone, and I'm very happy. Actually preferring the 1v 1tone setup (Gee, didn't Leo think of that about 60 years ago?), allows me to keep the nice neck and bridge combo tone when backing off the volume, gets a bit more Gibson-ish when the highs taper off a bit. Tried a Wilkinson chopped top loading bridge with 3 barrel saddles, I did find that it killed a bit of sustain, felt too slinky for my tastes, so i'm back to the stock bridge. Proud to have a tele as my HB guitar! Gibbo's are beautiful instruments, I'd love me a custom shop '59- but you can't toss 'em in the trunk or bang 'em into stuff (or let your 2 year old mess around with 'em). Sorry for the ramblin', I's been away for a while. Fearnot November 8th, 2010, 02:09 PM Okay, I'm here to testify to the wonders of a good setup. My Tele Custom has been hanging around, with a muddy neck pickup and cranky about staying in tune. (See my previous post.) I finally dragged it out to get the work done, got it back and it plays like a total champ now. I took it to rehearsal last night and it stayed in tune all night and both pickups sounded great. Such a transformation that I'm tempted to put it up as an NGD post... but I want to dress it up with some gold tele knobs to match the Mighty Mite pickups first. The joy of it is matching some nice vintage-wound HBs (again, I think these are pretty much the same as stock) with a pretty darned nice Tele neck. Very happy with the results. (And I'd name check the man who did the work here, but he's already got a 2-week backlog to deal with. ) gtarman59 December 22nd, 2010, 04:17 PM I'm thinking about getting one of these. I'd like to know what it measures from the nut to the pole pieces of the neck pickup. If one of you would be so kind...Thanks in advance. (Mods: If I've posted this in the wrong spot, please don't hesitate to move it...) rockingstones January 22nd, 2011, 12:52 AM Here,s mine. No way! That's mine. I got one just the same! rockingstones January 22nd, 2011, 01:05 AM No way! That's mine. I got one just the same! I play a black one in a stones tribute band into a fender hot rod deluxe. No effects, use the clean channel, and at stage volume I get a little bit of grit. Maybe I've gone a bit tone deaf, but I have no urge to change a thing - the stock setup sounds just fine to me. I also play a 1984 US Telecaster, and a 1984 Daion Performer (Tele copy). I just love Teles. tweeddeluxe January 22nd, 2011, 08:09 AM I've had one for a few years that I don't play as often as I should. Think I'll do like Markofthefish and keep it tuned to open G. I recently thought of selling it but I over improved it so much I'd take too much of a beating. Rob Di replaced the nut, tuners, switch and pots and did a superb setup. It plays really well and I've grown to like the pickups. I'll try to post pix soon. KRamone27 January 31st, 2011, 09:18 AM I got one can I join? My wife bought this for me for my birthday about 4 years ago. I love the feel and the sound of the pickups are great but don't like the cheap pots and switch so I think a total electronics upgrade -pickups is in its future. I might also switch the stock tuners to gotoh or wilkinson vintage style and a bone nut. http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg128/KRamone27/Squier%20VM%20Telecaster%20Custom/SquierVMTelecasterCustom.jpg http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg128/KRamone27/Squier%20VM%20Telecaster%20Custom/SquierTelecasterCustom3.jpg http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg128/KRamone27/Squier%20VM%20Telecaster%20Custom/SquierTelecasterCustom4.jpg KRamone27 February 7th, 2011, 10:04 PM Does anyone have any pics of theirs with mods or upgrades? hankgittar February 10th, 2011, 10:29 PM Here's a quick pic of mine - the GFS FatPat Zebras are really sweet & hot, very versatile. ALMOST means no need for a Les Paul .... great pickups, and cheap. Any advice for better tuners/pots? Improved pickups make stock wiring seem cheap, hoping better tuners would improve tuning stability. KRamone27 November 22nd, 2011, 05:52 PM No new members? dhenry88 November 28th, 2011, 04:57 AM Count me in. Just scored one for $149 used at GC :) I love the way this guitar feels. Neck is fast as all hell, and it's got a great feel to it. KRamone27 November 29th, 2011, 08:43 AM There's one for sale on CL in Texas for $100 I might call the guy to see if he'll ship it. dhenry88 December 12th, 2011, 07:16 AM What part of TX? If near DFW, I'm gonna kick myself, cause I'm getting my Tele Custom over the next week, and it's for $150. Haha. dhenry88 January 12th, 2012, 12:27 AM Finally able to take pics of my new Tele after my mods. Replaced all saddle adjustment screws with stainless steel screws I found at an Ace Hardware for $0.37 apiece. Replaced poor quality, stock jack cup with a more generic football-shaped plate and Switchcraft jack. Changed pickups with a pair of the stock pickups taken from a PRS SE Custom 22. I like these pickups. I'm actually collecting as many matched sets of these as I can, just scooping them up once PRS SE owners replace them with something else. Has anyone besides me thought that the amount of wax used to pot the stock pickups was a bit overkill? There was about a 1/4" thick layer of wax caked up around the pickups' baseplates. I've never seen that before, and thought of this as crap workmanship. It's still a work in progress. I plan to replace all pots and caps before long, and put in black mounting rings around the pickups, because I kinda like that look. Might strip the finish and go Olympic White with it, seeing how I already have two other black guitars (my '91 Korean Squier Strat and 2002 PRS Tremonti SE). In all, it's a great guitar, not even considering that the total cost AFTER mods was a hair over $200! Here are some pics. Sorry for the poor cell phone quality, my wife had the good camera at the time I took these. 108847 108848 108849 dada January 12th, 2012, 10:39 AM I got one a few months ago for $100. I threw in a pair of HB's from an old Yammie Les Paul, the neck is the Yam PU and the bridge is a Duncan JB. My buddy has been using it for the last couple of months. As soon as I get it back I have a can of Re-ranch Sonic Blue that I am going to refinish the body with. Anyone know where I can get a white PG from that doesn't break the bank? I think the necks on these are really fabulous. dhenry88 January 12th, 2012, 12:13 PM I got one a few months ago for $100. I think the necks on these are really fabulous. I love the neck on this guitar. I'm not sure as to where to get a white pickguard for this guitar at a reasonable price. The Fender guards won't fit due to hole placement and the larger WRHB routes. I don't know if the Warmoth guards will fit these. I would take a look at Terrapin Guitars, they're a little pricey but they can make an exact duplicate of your pickguard but in white. bleakanddivine February 24th, 2012, 02:55 PM I've just got one of these, and every time I play it I wonder how long it's going to take for that pale neck to get real grubby. It feels almost untreated, as if keeping the finish clean is going to be a real problem with hot sweaty sticky hands. Has this happened to anybody's yet, and is there anything that can be put on it to prevent it if it's a problem? Thanks Fearnot March 10th, 2012, 12:14 AM I've been playing mine for 2 years now and it's still pretty much non-grubby. And the light finish is one of my favorite things about the neck. trev333 March 10th, 2012, 12:37 AM I've got a Korean made Squier... HH... short scale, set neck, semi hollow mahogany... sounds OK... it's out on loan at the moment.... a mate got his gibbo pinched... so I thought I'd ease his pain with a lend of this one for a while.... I've built him a new guitar, I just haven't got around to swapping it over with him yet...... dada May 19th, 2012, 04:26 PM So it was black when I joined a while back but..... Here is my latest attempt at refinishing a cheapy. I bought this last year for $100. Had a couple of nice humbuckers laying around, an SD JB and an old Yamaha pickup out of a mid seventies Les Paul copy. I ordered a bunch of different Reranch colors and thought this would be a candidate for Seafoam Green. I left the original black finish on, lightly sanded and primed with BIN shellac primer. Used most of the Seafoam can on the body and then used Minwax lacquer clear on both the neck and body. It's had its initial buffing, but I will wait for a couple of more months and re-buff when it really cures properly. I'm quite chuffed about how it looks. The last picture also shows an Affinity BSB I re-finished in Surf Green last summer as a point of reference. I also have the black one, but it will stay black for the moment. I'm a King Bee, buzzin round your hive... Saddle August 7th, 2012, 10:07 PM Well, I just got myself one of these guitars about a week ago. Black on black. Not sure when it was made, but the SN is: IC040542540 It's in very good shape, but I have to admit that I got it in trade, and I'm not sure if I'm in love yet. I've always wanted a standard Tele with Single Coils, and so far, I've not been able to get any kind of tone I want out of this. It has 500k Alpha pots in it from the factory. .022uf caps on the tone control. So I've been thinking of how I could put some single coil pups in this guitar. But it sure has a nice neck. Setup very well. Had to adjust the intonation and that's about it. Glad I found this thread/club. Hope to get some ideas for mods, etc. Thanks Saddle Saddle August 7th, 2012, 10:58 PM So it was black when I joined a while back but..... Here is my latest attempt at refinishing a cheapy. The A string looks recessed. Can you explain? |
