WOW. That's all I've got to say. It's fairly high in output to reasonably compete with a P90 in the neck (this pickup is around 9.5K and the P90 is still higher in output!!), so to get a reasonable amount of headroom I have to ride the volume control on my guitar pretty hard (and be careful with my picking). Anyways, when clean, they're bright and snappy with a nice deep sizzling bass; These pickups have lots of sparkle that the TE50's don't have (that's a good thing; I wanted something different to complement it). The guy who immediately comes to mind when clean is Pete Anderson. Tons of sparkle, sizzle, and snap. VERY Articulate. With the tone rolled down a bit to about 7.5 and in the middle position, it did a pretty darn good Kieth Richards, too.
After a while when playing clean, I turned my little 1X12 Champ clone up to about 10.5 out of 12 and who'd have thought you could play Ozzy Osbourne on a stock tele with a Fender amp? "Crazy Train" has never sounded so good! At 10.5, this amp gets very compressed and fat with single coils. It sounded like Randy Rhoads meets Pete Anderson. Cool! It wasn't nearly as high gain as Randy Rhoads, of course. It was more hard rock sounding than Metal. Van Halen sounds pretty darn good here too. This pickup grinds like a son-of-a bitch.
The coolest thing was that when the amp was turned up to about 9, the pickup still retained every bit of its articulation and snap! With the Volume and tone control dimed, everything you played sounded kind-of punkabilly-ish. I was having a ball playing Aerosmith, Queen, and AC/DC. With the guitar volume on about 8.5 and the tone on about 7.5, I got pretty close to Jimmy Page's LZ I tone (minus the Vox Tonebender). One odd thing I noticed was that when I was playing with the volume control around 8 and the tone dimed, I got eerily close to Pete Townshend's tone on "Pinball Wizard" during the Woodstock concert.
I got a completely different flavor of Telecaster with this pickup. Cool as hell. Peter Florance is a magician. That's all I've gotta say about his work. To be able to get this much sizzle, snap, sparkle, and articulation out of a pickup with THAT MUCH WIRE on it is just amazing.
