Anybody here ever played both the Suhr Tele neck pup and the Lollar Tele Special neck pup?
A deal for a used Suhr Tele neck pup fell through, and maybe it's a good opportunity to try something else rather than just knee-jerk on a set of Suhr Tele pups (although I've always loved 'em).
Going in a Hamer T51. Suhr Tele bridge going in already, no matter what. :)

Richard, I have not tried the Suhr, but I think very highly of the Lollar "Special". It's an outstanding pickup. If your a neck pickup player at all, you'll find your self loving the tone this beauty puts out. Lollar pickups are very responsive to pick attack and volume / tone control tweaks.
I've heard the Suhr is a wonderful pickup, so you can't go wrong either way. I'd suggest the Lollar though, as you already know what you'll get with the Suhr. OF course, if your happy with the Suhr tone, stay put! If you do get the Lollar and don't care for it though, you won't have any problem getting rid of it. Lollars and Suhrs are two pickups you seldom see in the used market. To me, that speaks of their tone quality. Most who have them see no reason to try anything else. Good luck whatever way you choose to go.

I have a set of Suhrs in my 52RI and a set of Lollar Vintage (not the Specials) in my homebrew Tele.
The Suhrs are beefier, the neckpu is almost Strattish.
The Lollars are brighter, much more twang, neck pickup is very bright but it's really responsive to the tonecontrol and a Jazz-tone is no problem.

Thanks for the helpful replies. I've decided to try a Lollar Special in the neck pos. Should have it late next week.

It took a while to get the pickups installed, but now that I have, that Lollar Special in the neck position is SIMPLY AMAZING. It sounds like the wood, which is the highest compliment I can possibly give to a pickup.
Surprisingly, I'm less than knocked out by the Suhr Fat T bridge in conjunction with the Lollar in the neck. I usually like Suhr Tele pups a lot, but the neck Suhr doesn't seem to compliment the Lollar very well. I'm strongly considering swapping the Suhr out for a Lollar Special in the bridge.

That surprises me. I've never heard the Lollar Special but I thought it would be in the same category as the Suhr neckpu's. Is it a volume-problem ?

Glad you like the Lollar. Sounds like the wood is great analogy. I know exactly what you mean. Sorry to hear it does not mate well with the Suhr bridge pup, but what a great excuse to try the Lollar special bridge pickup!

It's might be a volume-balance issue masquerading as a timbre-mismatch issue. I'll diddle around some more with bridge pickup height in the morning and see what that does.
The Lollar is a slightly hotter pickup, so I'm a little skeptical of how much I'll be able to compensate. I've got the neck pup right where I want it. :)
Additional FYI: I had to ask a local luthier/tech to slightly route out the pickup cavity (1/32" along one side) to fit the Lollar pup.
Like BB says, it's just a good excuse to put a Lollar bridge pup in there!
