Significant volume drop-off from coil-splitting?

I have a Tele with Seymour Duncan Jazz in the neck position. I've wired it to a push-pull pot in the tone control, which splits the coils. When split, there seems to be significant drop-off in volume. How normal is this, and if it isn't, is there some remedy I can consider?

For what it's worth, I have a pair of Bill Lawrence L500 pickups in an SG and when I split those, I get nowhere near the amount of drop-off in volume; I get some marginal drop, and the thinner sound of a single-coil.

Any advice?

I would have said the volume drop is normal, but since you have something to compare it to, I'm not so sure. Maybe the L500's are just hotter?

The only possible remedy would be to add in a resistor (I think!) to the ground so less is grounded. I am very interested in hearing what some of the other members have done.
