has anyone done this? I know stains don't penetrate wood like dyes do but wondering if the stain will totally kill the figuring or if some still comes through. I got some figured walnut that i will be working with.
If anyone has, pics would be icing on the cake.

I, and I think most others would HIGHLY reccomend going for some dye instead of stain!

Dyes aren't hard to find or use. Try some dyes and stains on some samples of what you are coating. Different figures respond differently to different stains, tinted grain fillers, and dyes.
"Stain" is almost a dirty word when it comes to guitar body finishes. Gibson, Martin, Leo, etc used toned lacquers, and not stains. Dyes were exciting enough to make newcoming guitar makers want to step out. Stains never really made it.
