DRRI Care & Maintenance

Hey all,

I was brutally forced to take home a brand spanking new Deluxe Reverb Reissue yesterday, and I have a few basic questions about taking care of it. The only other tube amp I've had (and still do) is a Champ 600 RI, which hasn't needed a whole lot of attention other than making sure not to leave it on overnight. The Deluxe is a beast of an amp, and I don't want to inadvertently damage anything. So: is there anything I should/shouldn't do besides dropping it? Is it better to leave it powered up and toggle Standby on and off when I'm at home practising for a few hours? Also, I've noticed that engaging the standby switch (putting it into standby after playing) makes a pretty loud "pop," is that normal?

Sorry for the basic questions, but I couldn't find anything in the search. Thanks!

Oh, also - is it ok to lie it on its back for transport?

Yes, It's OK to put the amp on its back. Any vibration that's strong enough to move the tubes out of alignment would do the same if it was standing up, too.

Regarding standby switches: Turn the amp on when you want to play, turn it off when you don't. All power up/power down sequences are basically bogus, especially with a tube rectifier--the rectifier delays the application of high voltage until the filaments are warm. Use the standby for guitar changeovers and between sets. There's no point to leaving the filaments warm for several hours between practice sessions.

Someone will doubtless point out a studio or something, where the amps have been on for 10 years, using the standby switches to activate the amps. Great, but if you want to warm the room, get a space heater.

MY DRRI has suffered some pretty good jolts. It's a 2003 model. It's fallen off 12" ledges, fallen face forward in the back of the car when making sharp turns, and I've jumped off of it a few times. It's turned out to be a pretty tough amp. The "pop" is normal when cutting it off.

Awesome, thanks guys. Now I have to try not to get evicted... Of course it has to sound best when it's cranked. Any ideas for how to stop irate neighbors from beating down the door?
