PRS SE Standard - Part II: Copper magic

Hi all :)

PRS SE Standard - Part I (http://www.tdpri.com/forum/finely-finished/183815-prs-se-standard-matte-mahogany.html)

The grain of the 3-piece light mahogany body was fairly bland so I went for some copper magic.

The photos don't do it justice.

Now, to clear-coat or not to clear-coat?
There is no question it'd make the finish more durable, but I'm afraid it might make it look like plastic more than metal.

This is the paint I used: Rustoleum - Bright Copper (http://www.rustoleumspraypaint.com/Shop/Product.aspx/156/495/metallic-spray-paint).

I might get another SE Standard, while they are still in stock and very cheap, and go for a "Bright Gold" or "Chrome" finish.

I like that.Any more photos? Is that your own build or have you repainted?

You could always do a satin finish instead of a glossy one, that wouldn't make it look plasticey

More photos coming soon...
Link to part I of this story in my first post. ;)

I've decided to use a gloss finish. I should then have the option to dull it if it doesn't quite work. :)

EDIT: You know what, Joe, I think you might be right.
If I do a glossy finish and end up not liking the result I might be taking the risk of cutting through it when dulling it....

I guess the question is does a satin lacquer dull the finish it is applied to or is it mostly neutral and mainly serves as a protecting layer (which is what I'm after)?

I went for "no clear-coat". :)

It's going to look more like a piece of copper as I play it, losing some of the sparkle.

I'm pretty sure it's going to "relic" fairly quickly too.
I don't mind though, the mahogany finish under the copper is going to provide a nice contrast.

LADIES & GENTLEMEN, PLEASE GIVE A WARM WELCOME TO..... "COPPER PIXIE!!!!"

Thanks Doug :)

EugeneC, I have tested the "Chrome" finish on a test body and I can't get it to actually look like chrome.
I'm now experimenting with a brushed aluminum effect.
The paint doesn't seem to be the type that would flake but I guess time will tell. ;)

That looks GREAT !!!

I'm partial to copper though - see my recent build...
http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home-depot/175911-not-copper-esquire.html

The paint you chose looks to have a really nice 'natural' copper appearance to it. I had actually considered doing a 'copper leaf' finish on mine, but thought that should wait until I've got a little more experience.

Cheers,
Joe

Thanks Joe and great job on your built. :)

I toyed with the idea of "leafing" as well but dropped it fairly early.
Too much work.

I think the "natural" look comes from both the paint and the lack of clear-coat.
I'm pretty sure my finish won't last very long because of the latter, but it'll hopefully give the guitar a nice relic look. ;)

Hello J_Stauffer :)

As you can see in the first (and short) part of this story (http://www.tdpri.com/forum/finely-finished/183815-prs-se-standard-matte-mahogany.html), the guitar is a PRS SE Standard.
They are now out of production and can be found failry cheap.
Mine cost me £279.00 including a PRS SE gig-bag and free delivery.
You can probably find it for $300-$350, if not cheaper, in the US.
I personally think it is an extremely good price/quality ratio. ;)

And now, for some money-shots....

I used the led-backlighting of my tv for some "stage light" effects (not photoshop). :)

I really like the way the color changes depending on light and angles. :)

No flash was used during the making of these photos. ;)
