Roller nut experience ?blakktode November 6th, 2009, 07:03 AM Anybody here ever use a roller nut on a build ? Advantages ? Disadvantages ? bokeh November 12th, 2009, 04:24 PM i am also interested in knowing the answer to this question! mostly i would like to know how easy it would be to install, and how it would affect the tone treadwm November 12th, 2009, 04:32 PM Also interested. A client requested a roller nut and all I've ever heard is negative hearsay. The client was also quick to point out that Jeff beck didn't have any problems with them. ;-) Al Watsky November 12th, 2009, 06:26 PM My only complaint is there is less adjustability. Fender supplies little metal shims which are a bit fussy, but work. Its a wider slot than a standard nut. You would need to be able to rout that. The shims raise the nut off the slot floor. They are bright. There are issues if the user wants to use heavy strings on the bass side. You can't adjust the width of the slot for say a 52 on the low E. They seem to work well. There are thousands of guitars out there with roller nuts. I have never had some one ask to have one replaced, thats almost a reverse endorsement. Right. Why not ? tnt423 November 18th, 2009, 08:58 AM I've installed at least 10 of these for customers. The tone is brighter that bone. One thing to keep in mind is that you have to remove material from the fretboard end and if you decide to go back to the original nut, you have to glue a spacer in, to maintain the proper distance from the nut to the first fret. You can install heavier strings on the LSR roller. It requires removing the bearings and file the groove. The older Wilkinson, not so much. I had one on my favorite strat for a long time, but times got tough and someone offered enough to make me part with it. Had great tuning stability even before I installed the locking tuners. I will put an LSR roller on my current strat eventually. Nick5150 November 18th, 2009, 09:19 AM I have installed a few for some customers interestingly enough my luthier that I apprenticed under explained to me that the smaller surface that the string is passing over on the ball and not the bearing spinning is what causes the better tuning stability. I noticed that often times while bending the bearings would not rotate in any way. I would say if you like the brighter tone go for it otherwise a well dressed nut of any other material will perform well. I am in love with the earvana and have it on my tele. | ||
