Marshall Haze post practice report

This amp seemed great. at apartment levels. sounded really nice. The amp when brought to rehearsal and competing with a loud drummer, not so great.
the amp had an internal vibration that was audible from close to the amp. The heat levels were insane. i am sure there is a potential for overheating. The sound on the clean channel with a tele was nice. when cranked had a nice distortion and usable. The gain channel was mushy, no definition. had the presence cranked and treble cranked no articulation. Plenty of volume. tried it with a 4x12 cab, same deal, just louder. i had exchanged a line 6 spider valve, the line 6 tube amp created with bogner. that amp had articulation and more gain on tap but no good clean and noisy as can be with high gain. still looking for a combo around 7 or under that will do clean and heavy with articulation and rehab. any suggestions?

Used DSL401 should be just what the doctor ordered.

Good luck though, I've been through a boatload of amps lately trying to find something in that price range. Buying new, it's impossible. There's a HUGE hole in the market right there. You can't get a decent giggable tube amp with any kind of clean headroom for between $500-$1000, unless it's a Fender, and I don't really dig any of those. Somebody really needs to fill this price point.

Used you can find stuff, like the DSL401 I mentioned, but it's really hard. There just is precious little stuff to be had in that budget. I know, cause I'm right there with you.

I haven't heard them personally, but I hear raves about the new Egnator Rebel combos - just about in your price neighborhood too. You can find them everywhere too...

+1. I liked the 401 once, but never found that same tone again. I had limited attempts though, as I really wasn't in the market at the time.

The thing about 'em is, that the 401 had heat problems too, but the ones that are used and still kicking would probably be the ones that are going to keep kicking.

It's true though, that there's a big hole in the market there. The Fender SuperSonic combos might be worth a look. Whatever Mesa is doing in that same price range might be worth a look too. They've historically put out some toneful, but underappreciated amps. They aren't really for me, but they're good. Peavey also has a couple of newer tube models that might be worth looking at, but I haven't personally tried them.

Oooh! Laney. Find some Laneys and try them. They might have just what you're looking for. Totally underrated.

Bummer about the Haze, but I kinda predicted it. Whenever Marshall gets all excited about fancy new high-tech garbage they wind up outside their field of expertise and fall on their faces. I love 'em, but I'm not shocked. I agree though. They sound good in the store.

I need to try one of those Rebels out one of these days. I've only ever seen one, and it was when I went to the GC in Las Vegas.
Oh, and speaking of Marshall, I went to a buddies place to jam last weekend, and played through my Marshall AVT100. It was the first time that I played outside of the house with it, and I was very pleased with the sound. I wanted to trade it in on the Haze when they first came out, but now I think I'll stick with the AVT.

Yeah, you need to try a Rebel. I was hooked after about 45 seconds. Then came home and swung a better deal from MF - it'll be here middle of next week.
