Peavey Classic 30 up in smoke!!

So I'm at a local GC today test driving amps, took my Thinline just to make it fair. Plugged into a C30, adjusted the clean channel, switched to the dirt channel - nuthin'. Switched back - still nuthin'. Caught a wiff of smoldering electronics (hate that smell!), looked closely and the amp was smokin'!! :shock: And not the GOOD kind of smokin'! :wink: So I told the dude, packed up my Tele and left.

I did, however, play a killer Egnater Rebel 30 1x12 combo. DANG!!! But that's another story for another thread.:mrgreen:

Decades ago I went to buy a Twin Reverb and the salesman insisted that I try a Peavey first because he told me that they were more reliable. He turned the Peavey on and billows of smoke rose out of the amplifier. The salesman kinda got quiet and we walked back over the TR. Probably just a fluke incident though.

The tube Peaveys were always a PITA to fix because they were always on PCBs when Fender was still point wired. Since Fender has Peaveyized their amps I guess it's a draw.

Having said that the first old tweed Peaveys-Liz Taylor Bassmans with either a solid state driver section or a hybrid one using Compactrons-were great country or jazz amps. And their huge solid state PA amps hold up remarkably well too.

I had a C30 I bought new when they were a relatively new model, probably around '97. Played it pretty hard and never had any trouble with it, so this one really surprised me.

i was in GC one day and they had a old blackface princeton on the floor for $1000. i plugged in a tele and turned it on. a bunch of buzzing and a flash of light from the back! a little smoke and then nothing. i offered $200 and the punk....i'mean customer service representative......said he'd check with the mgr. no dice! heck...i thought it was a pretty good offer for an amp that didn't work!

I have never seen an amp go up like that in store. But one time in GC I saw kid wanting look at an Epi Les Paul. The salesman is like dont touch it I will get it for ya. Grabs the Epi turns and drops it in the floor. That thing was as broken as dishes at a Greek wedding. I just had to laugh. Damn that was funny !!!!!!!

It can happen but I am also of the opinion that this is very rare. I have two Classic 30's from around 04, both excellent both very very reliable. I did recently buy an AC15 that did the burning smell thing and I brought it back to GC. I don't think they fixed it but I do think they resold it...!

I think I was plugged into a Classic 30 last night when I was being bedazzled by a P-90'd Squier Tele Custom. It didn't blow up, but sounded like it was going to (in a good way) when I dimed the drive channel pre-amp.

HAH!!:lol: Yeah, that's the difference between "this amp is smokin'" and "this amp is SMOKIN!!" :mrgreen::mrgreen:

Nope, still there. That's one of the few shops in metro Ctown that I haven't been in. May have to drop by next time I'm out east.

They will probably send you a repair bill :wink:

that is probably more a statement about the abuse equiment is dealt @ GC than a reliability issue with peavey amps

i've walked into the 'quiet room' @ GC on occasion and found that several of their nice tube amps are turned on and cooking ... perhaps they've been on for days and days.. who knows.

I couldn't help but be reminded of the scene from an old Cheech & Chong movie where they go into this uppity music shop and Tommy rips this absolutely obnoxious guitar solo that blows up the amp head.

Honest - I wasn't playing that loud!!!
