Here is an exercise in avoiding playing too many notes. Each time through the 12 bars, I use only 3 notes from the minor pentatonic scale.

Thanks for posting. jhundt October 30th, 2009, 04:58 PM that is probably the most valuable blues lesson I've seen. Keep it SIMPLE! but too bad - in typical blues fashion he went on for 6 choruses! (that is meant as a joke!) Mike Bruce October 30th, 2009, 05:35 PM Very intelligent approach to an age old problem of learning how to phrase. Well done. Mike Bruce LuvN Guitars October 30th, 2009, 05:54 PM Great! Phrasing is all. A very valuable lesson. BigDaddyLH October 30th, 2009, 06:00 PM Great job, rotren! Canadian economy and Swedish DUI. Why not do a slide guitar example using this? http://thingsiusedtoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/allen_key.jpg ibobunot October 30th, 2009, 06:14 PM Albert Collins was the master of parking in one spot and workin' the hell out of it... 4s2uElEmrxc brokenjoe October 30th, 2009, 06:51 PM I used to (sometimes still do) play a little game where I'd play only three notes -actually three positions over a 12 bar. What I mean is, say you get only the root, the the fifth, and the seventh. No octaves allowed. You can bend, vibrato, hammer on, etc., all you want to get other notes, but it has to stay in one position. Charlesinator October 30th, 2009, 10:47 PM Robert you are friggin' awesome. Without a doubt your best lesson ever! Kudos, kudos, kudos. B Valley October 31st, 2009, 03:14 AM Check out Rotren's website. Tons of cool stuff. There should be a link there for his podcasts as well, or you can find it on itunes. Pinball_Wizard October 31st, 2009, 03:33 AM Man I had forgotten about this. way back when I first started playing, three note leads was my favorite exercise. that's how I got good. Thanks rotren. I've been itchen to get back in the blues. rotren November 2nd, 2009, 10:38 AM Thanks everyone! Charlesinator, glad to hear it's a good one! Slide guitar - sure, why not. Problem is for me, I suck at slide guitar. Any instrument can use the same approach - few notes and trying to make them really count. Again, thanks so much everyone. Robert | ||
