I have a Jazzmaster that got a paint chunk busted out of it the size of a nickle. I built it back up (filled in) with fingernail polish (many coats) and sanded it down (many steps). It looks pretty good now.

I was lucky though as the guitar is a 3 tone Sunburst and it was the black that was damaged. Easy to match.

I'd imagine that it would be touch to color match a translucent finish like that. I'd personally leave it be, but if you want, you can touch it up with some clear to seal the wood (which may actually still be sealed by the sanding sealer).

Oh your 14. No problem keep the guitar until your in your thirties and the paint will look much better. Keep Rocking!!!

Well, at least it wasn't a big chunk of wood. I'm a fan of relics but I have to admit, I'm scared to death of putting a ding in my Classic 50s Esquire. Hope you're able to touch it up.

These things happen. Now you don't have to worry so much about the next ding.

My 95 AS Tele still has a flawless coat of shiny red paint on it. It is coming up on 15 years since I took it from the show room floor new. It stays leaned up against my amp with 4 cats being chased by a 3 year old boy all over the house. To tell the truth, the pressure is so high right now, to not get a nick on it, that daily I'm having to fight the urge to go smack it with a pipe wrench and get it over with. Consider yourself lucky.

It's got a bit of mojo now....

Now you can concentrate more on guitar playing than on babying the guitar.

so you're "the one"... but clearly still in the matrix.

He is clearly upset and wants to fix this. Anyone know how to help him. I have patched clear with super glue several times....but I have no clue how to match that.

It's fine. On a guitar it's called "mojo". Wait until you get your first new car!

A lot of people spend a lot of money to have their guitar relic'ed . . . you got yours done for free.

Seriously, though, that's one reason I prefer to buy used guitars . . . if they already have a ding, you don't mind so much when they get another one . . . .

Looks like it's completely ruined. I'd dismantle it and sell off the parts, maybe with a little luck you'll be able to find another one, but you might want to look into either a metal body tele or an Axe-Sack.

when your an older wiser famous musician they'll be trying to duplicate that chip so just enjoy it as is

As a Luthier/ repairman the best way to fix it , being that it is not a nitro finish is to leave it alone. However a repair can be made that wont be noticed from three feet away by building up coats of nailpolish, which by the way is nitro based. the best way for that color would be to buy white, yellow, brown, and clear and custom mix a color for touch up. testors model paint may have somthing close as well, but would never use model paint on a nitro finish.

oh let mommy kiss the boo boo

people pay extra now for relicing. While it may affect resale value it was certain to happen sooner or later.

Considerate a baptism.

Kid, that's nuthin... if you play the guitar (as opposed to staring at it in breathless wonder) you're gonna get some dings and scratches in it, especially if you play in a band. There's a reason some guitars are called "closet queens"... yours ain't gonna be one of 'em...

If you really want to get it fixed go to a skilled repairman.I prefer used guitars for the same reasons as nvilletele. The first ding bothers me.

Absolutely.

It's all about personal preferences, and I'd wholly understand that a young player is going to worry about resale value.

JoeMonkey, I hope you get it fixed good, and it all works out for you Dude ;)
Good luck

But , generally speaking, I really wouldnt want to have to worry about keeping my Tele 'pristine', or, conversely , worry about ownership a valuable vintage tele (or worse, having a guitar that i cannot use for fear of its value.

I dont see the point in that!

Thats probably why i will always remain happier with partscasters, or less valuable guitars, as i kinda like the dings that may occur.

I wont go out of my way to introduce damage!, but I'm darned if i'd lose sleep over a ding or two - it adds to the Mojo!

And if anything helps you play better - in some conditions - i.e. one less thing to worry about when you are going for it.

But thats me, I accept, and apologies to take this thread off course from the OP's question the repair advice

Yeah, it sucks when you dent up your pride and joy. Can you find the missing chip? If so super glue it back in place. It won"t be invisible, but better. Matching the paint is tough, it might make it worse if you try and fix it, so you might be better to live with it.
