Just got a new $80 Squier!

My wife and I had to sell her '74 P-Bass last month due to extreme cash flow problems. This month some of the pressure is off, and I noticed a Squier Affinity P-Bass on Craigslist for $80. It played well, the guy selling it was nice, and it came in an 80s-riffic silver and black color scheme with black hardware. It cost exactly 10% of what we got for her old bass.

She likes it (I was afraid it would just make her sad after losing her baby). It also weighs less than her old bass and is easier to play. It probably sounds worse, but seeing as how our bass amp is a TNT 100, it's still not the weakest link in the chain. I'll post pictures as soon as I can.

I'd call that a good deal!

To hijack my own thread - I was thinking of putting black tapewound strings on it because they'd match the color scheme. My wife likes a bassy bass sound without a lot of cut, but is used to roundwounds. She plays rock and also acoustic music. She plays fingerstyle only. Can you play rock with tapewounds?

I think you can. In fact, that TNT has some nice EQ abilities so you might be pleasantly surprised.

(and with $720 left over, that's A LOT of strings...)

+1 upgrade the pots, and maybe the pickup and you could have a real winner. Thats what I did, and mine is still my #1 over all my other more pricey basses. I have 3 different warmoth basses, and a fender p.

About a zillion years ago in high school I bought a cheap bass, pulled the frets out, and used the tape wound strings. It was cool. The tape wound strings do have a much mellower sound. I don't think it has as much to do with "can you play rock with them" as much as "do you like the effect you get with them." I prefer the sound of round wound strings for rock but a couple years ago switched to flats as the the latter were shredding layers of skin off my fingers after playing for three hours. You learn to work with it. I have a Marcus Miller Jazz.

Some Squires are junk but many are excellent instruments. Especially for the price. I bought a Squire Tele. I love that guitar and often favor it for recording solos instead of my American Ash Strat or my "Best Of Class" Gibson Nighthawk. I paid $200 for that guitar.

Hey, I had a chance to play it with an amp this weekend. It sounded a little muddy as is, so I won't be putting any tapewounds on it, and may be replacing the pickup with a 25$ EMG select. Otherwise it plays great, and really, my wife has no problem with muddy, that's my thing.

BTW, Low End Theory, that's a nice looking bass!
