Open Gm tuning!?

Hey guys,

I was messing around today playing some Stones stuff and it hit me.....why not just lower the B string a half step and play in open Gm? So I did and, well.....it actually sounds kinda cool. I can't get used to only having "one" position and need to learn how to go from 5th string root to 4th string root chords but I smell potential.

What do you guys think?

I think the world is your oyster ... all open tunings are cool ... have fun with it.

I like dropping the third in open tunings to get a minor thing happening. It's a Skip James thing.

I am all for inventiveness, and anythign is doable if one perseveres, right?
My curiousity makes me want to ask what Stones' songs you would use this tuning on?

Well I could still play the classics, it's only a tiny bit harder. The nice thing is with open Gm I would feel like I could play more than just the Stones on it, ya know?

I have messed with it, and it's cool. I personally would be more inclined to use it once in a while, on specific songs that were in minor keys, easy to drop the g string a half step. But like FirstBassman says, open tunings are whatever you want them to be.

Great option!

I also do this with "Open D" Tuning. I drop the F# (3rd. String) to an F.

Perfect for those "other" 3rds. that lay between the Bb and the B! Just bend the notes a little, or angle the Slide.

jj--

search around here, there's a thread about playing minor chords in open G tuning, as well.

i think it's cool to have both tunings as a possibility, though, this thread just offers a different approach for those who still want the one finger major chord.

Yup, “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues.”

Great stuff.
