I am trying to make a custom shaped pickguard for a vintage tele-esque vintage body i picked up for cheap and was wondering what tool you guys would reccomend for cutting a pickguard accurately, short of a router? if a router is the only way to go, does anybody have one they want to give me cheap?

thanks,
isaac

I'm thinking of getting a little trim router as my first foray into those particular death-machines, specifically to cut pickguards.

A while ago, I hand cut a pg for a 1996 Ibanez ATK300 bass, with nothing more than a jigsaw, some sandpaper and a Stanley knife blade. Jigsaw to take the meat off, sandpaper down to the line & then use the blade (scraping, not cutting) to work the angle in. As I was using a B/W/B blank, I knew I had the angle right when all three lines looked the same thickness.

Now, I will say it turned out pretty good - but it took FOREVER. The ATK doesn't have a pickup cutout, so it would be even worse for a Tele or Strat.

this body i got has some pretty wierd routing on the front that i need to cover up, so i was thinking of making it swoopy with lots of round edges and i need to be able to cut a hole for a lipstick pickup, so i dont really know if i can do that with a jigsaw.
