2 color paint job question?

I am painting an alder strat body Antique White. However it came out a little more yellow than I would have liked. I am now thinking a few black stripes around the arm countour and back might look cool. My idea is for 1 thick black stripe about 4'' wide with a 1/4'' thin black stripe that is seperated by the base color. My question is can I just lay the black stripes down over the base coate? Do I need to sand or anything first? I am using Nitro lacquer and solid color colortone pigment. If I tape off with Fine-line tape will I get bleed over? What is the best method?

Thanks
Keith

Sounds like you are on the right track. You really don't need to prep the surface unless you have started the wet sanding and gone past 400-600 grit, or so.
The new lacquer will melt into the base coat so adhesion shouldn't be a problem.

I use that pinstripe masking tape from the auto parts store. Only one trick I've found with it is DO NOT stretch it when applying, especially on inside curves. O/W the tape will try to shrink back, even though it may not be noticable.

Even after all best efforts you may still have some bleed under and have to sharpen up the lines with a razor knife.

Try to keep your second color coat as thin as possible so there isn't a height difference in colors.

After a few clear coats and your normal sanding/polishing schedule it should look like a factory job.
Good luck to ya.

Something to consider... Maybe try it on a scrap piece first... When I paint stripes on walls or floors (never tried it on a guitar), after I mask the area I want to stripe, I'll give it a coat of the base color. This way, if there is any bleed, it's the same color as the base and this seals the edge of the tape. I always get really crisp edges this way. You could probably use clear as well. I guess the only drawback is the extra coat of lacquer, raising the stripe that much higher off the base.

Just a suggestion.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Sounds like I could use a little of both methods you guys mentioned. After taping it off I will hit it with a base coate and let it dry. Then hit it with very light coates of Black. Sounds like a plan!!!

Thanks

That is a great idea, thanks.
