A coupla piney casters

I've been lurking here since I built my first Telecaster from parts scavenged across the interweb. I keep playing Arlo West's songs on Youtube with Ole Piney and just love the sounds that a pine caster generates.

My brother's father in law had passed away last fall and I inherited some of his tools, well his widow asked me if I was interested in some of his "old Wood" to build guitars with. I checked it out and he has about 400 linear feet of 5/4X16 stock of varying lengths. Most of it is pine as far as I can tell.

Here's one of the planks. Measures 16"x48"x5/4"

I had the planks planed to 15/16" so that I could laminate them to 1 3/4"

And here's the first body cut out of the prettiest piece.

Not wanting to copy anyone elses headstock I sketched my own and inset my own logo.

Finally the second body is starting to come along and has the first coat of finish on it.

The major issue with this wood is that the "pretty" one has some very open pores around the center part that is really dark in the pic. I had problems with tear out and decided to reinforce it with clear epoxy in order to add some strength.

I'm just waiting for more money to purchase parts so that I can continue...

It's harder than you'd think isn't it??

Good luck with the rest of the build... Keep us posted!

I know how you feel. I've been trying to design an original headstock for over a year. As I approached the end of the neck build on my first scratch build, I found one I liked and cut it out.Turns out it's kinda similar to another popular guitar. You go over so many options that you get sorta snowblind, and forget everything that's already out there. But a more experienced builder I admire gave me some advice. He told me that there is so much out there already that it's extremely difficult to come up with something that's totally different yet still balanced in proportion. If I didn't copy it point for point(I didn't, and you didn't), don't sweat it. It's still your design.
I like the wood you have. Looks great, especially that first body. Looking forward to watching this progress.

I like your headstock a lot... and I think it's different enough that you can call it your own!

That headstock is similiar to the one on my Epiphone bass as well...

Hmm, I moved my website to a new server and most of my pictures disappeared.

Oh well, here's an update:
This guitar has been an essay in making lemon aid. First the bit in my dremel tool went wild and ruined my inlay attempt so I had to fix that and came up with a new logo design. Then I forgot to order string trees and didn't feel like paying the shipping on a $2 part so I made my own. Next I didn't have quite enough material for a standard tele pick guard so I came up with something different. All in all it sounds remarkably like a Tele, is extremely light weight and I think looks fantastic!

Mostly done, just missing pick guard and string trees

The pickguard, sort of a cross between a strat and tele shape.

And now the money shot:

Well, I like the guitar, and I like the headstock more than the G & L shape so I say great job!

I really like that headstock. It does a few things that you don't see often from non-pro builders. The proportions are balanced, it goes with the tele shape, it's unique, it's purty. Great job!
