Can a bakelite pickguard be stained a different color ? I have a white one I wish to modify to match a honey blonde telecaster. And if so, what kind of stain would be appropriate ? It's a custome tele and a standard 8 hole pickguard does not fit ( the holes don't quite line up ) I purchased some after market pickguards and even a Fender version and the holes are slightly different.

Are you sure that the pickguard material is bakelite?
White bakelite today is very hard to get and I've never seen an aftermarket pickguard made out of white bakelite.
You could spray it in the color of your choice but chances are that you wear through and it looks ugly.
That said, I know that there are a few (or at least one) pickguard company (was it Terrapin (http://www.terrapinguitars.com/) ?) who could provide you with a duplicate of your pickguard if you provide them with a template.
Or ask the people from Callaham if they could send you a pickguard (if they carry one you like) without the screw holes and drill them yourself. It's not that hard and can be done with very limited tools. There's even countersink tool on the market that does not require a drill-press and it yields good results....
