Hey All,
I just picked up this new body and am looking for some thoughts on finishing it. I've got 2 under my belt so far. A Strat I did in Vintage cream and a Tele I did in a butterscotch blond. Both in rattle cans from re ranch. Both turned out real nice.
Now I'm not just limited to rattle cans. I do have a compressor, I'm a remodeling contractor, and I've be thinking about getting a proper set up to get more variety, that is, the right kind of spray equipment. But I'd really like to here y'alls ideas of how you'd finish this body out.

This one definitely will look great in a clear gloss lacquer, with just a bit of ambering if you so desire.

My default is to go clear gloss. I add the toners and colors to the less expressive bodies to give myself variety and to exploit the advantages of that particular body. This one just looks delightful in raw form - let everyone see how fully realized it is.

Beautiful wood! Personally I would go for yellow, like the one in the finish room on the PRS factory tour on YouTube. If you haven't seen it just search YouTube for prs factory tour.

Yes, this maple does look sweet. I'm thinking something in a yellow or an amber as well. Just weighing my options, If I did stick to rattle cans, where would I go for these colors. I know Re Ranch has the neck Amber. I've still got most of a can of Butterscotch Blond, but I don't think that's right. I rally like the nitro finishes, at least that's what i've used the last 2 times and am real happy with this procedure and look. Is their some place besides Re Ranch I can get a wider variety of translucent paint colors that will allow this grain it's full potential?

I vote for transparent orange, like on a Gretsch; no idea how you'd do that, though - maybe a stain?

My vote would be for Tru-Oil first to pop the grain, and clearcoat with a nitro shader with a hint of amber tint. With something THAT nice (and it IS!), I'd keep it as unadulterated as possible. Visually, you already have a lot going on there with the double-laminated body. You'll have to grain-fill and sand the sides first.

Nice piece. Who made it?

I buy transtint dyes at my local woodcraft store. You can also order transtint dyes from reranch, or use stew mac dyes. They are made by the same manufacturer. For reference, transtint's honey amber is the same color as stewmac's vintage amber.

I would go for a dye job. I was in your spot last week. Trying to decide to go natural, or use some type of trans lacquer, or dye. I chose to dye the body. I used a little bit of transtint medium brown dye first, then sanded back leaving just a hint of brown in the darker figuring, and topped that with transtint honey amber dye. Then I applied tru oil to pop the grain. Next I'm going to burst the edge. Just trying to decide whether I want a sienna burst or honey burst.

Man, I really like that amber. I got a suggestion i liked from jrfrond, that being, mixing my own degree of amber using med brown, red and yellow dyes, which i ordered from re ranch. I also picked up a preval sprayer which i was/am going to use rather than wiping the dye on raw wood. I purchased this body already sanded and one coat of sealer.
You guys mentioned tru oil to bring out the grain of the maple more. can I put that on and get the desired affect with it already sealed. i added 3 more coats of sanding sealer.
I plan on giving it the binding look with tape. I did a bit of research on it at re ranch and stewmac, I think it'll look great.
please let me know about the tru oil and this body was made by THE NEVILLE CUSTOM SHOP, they are SIGNFINE on eBay and i purchased it for about a buck and a half.

You would need to sand back the maple to pop the grain with tru oil. It needs to be rubbed into raw wood. So if you plan to use it I would suggest sanding back to bare wood. At least on the front and back.
