jbmando October 19th, 2009, 04:11 PM Looks nice. I have been looking for a HH type guitar and finally found a Stellar LP copy on eBay. I'd have watched yours until it got too expensive, if it were listed. I think I'd rather have Vol and Tone for each p'up (4 knobs) if I were doing it.
jimd October 19th, 2009, 04:41 PM That's sweet! Like the headstock decal.
Give us some details. Where did you get the body and neck?
guitarbuilder October 19th, 2009, 06:25 PM Looks good. I love a LP shape.
boneyguy October 19th, 2009, 07:10 PM Thanks for the compliments guys!!

The decal was designed by myself and a friend.
I made the body form a single piece of Honduras Mahogany. I have a piece left over that I will make a Tele body from. The neck is a Mighty Mite that I found locally.

The plank had some hairline cracks on the butt end that I didn't see until after I began making the LP body. I don't think you can see them in the pics I posted but they're fairly obvious in person. I filled them as best I could but the stain highlights them. Live and learn.
The thing I'm probably most pleased with (which was also probably the most work) is the neck pocket. It's a perfect fit. There is absolutely no gap between the heel and the pocket. I got lucky I think.
Those are Grover tuners on it. They seem to be well made and I've had no tuning issues so far. I really like the old school Kluson look.
I made all my own templates which is a hell of alot of work, for me at least. I think the next build I won't be quite so creative and I'll just buy some Tele templates instead.

I never use the middle positon (both p/u's on) so that's why I just put a single vol and tone on it. I also used a 2 way switch. I've actually begun converting all my 2 pickup guitars to 2 way switches for the same reason.

Makes sense. I like the middle position on my HH and SS guitars.
boomboomba October 19th, 2009, 07:18 PM Very nice work! Are you keeping it or selling it?
boneyguy October 19th, 2009, 07:43 PM Very nice work! Are you keeping it or selling it?
I'm keeping it. I guess if the right amount of money was offered I would consider selling it.
eljayski October 19th, 2009, 08:29 PM bone nut? just askin'
JCBurke59 October 19th, 2009, 08:34 PM whoa - niiiiice.
giale123 October 19th, 2009, 08:45 PM you need to make a custom guitar shop =] and mass produce those ;] they are schmexy!

Took me a minute to get the pun. It will have a bone(y) nut one day for sure.

Thanks. Schmexy is good.
gitlvr October 19th, 2009, 10:17 PM That is a beautiful guitar. I'm planning a similar build next year. Looks great!
dsb1 October 19th, 2009, 10:20 PM WOW very well done. I really dig the whole headstock/logo...very spooky :)
Scatter Lee October 19th, 2009, 10:39 PM cool build

I'm happy with the decal. Most of it's design was created by a good friend of mine.
garymaddox October 20th, 2009, 02:31 PM That's an all round cool lookin' guitar!
telepunch October 20th, 2009, 02:40 PM very nice. I love the simplicity of it
jimd October 20th, 2009, 03:41 PM Keep the guitar. Sell the templates!
I've been wanting to do something similar. I've got some inspiration now.
Buckocaster51 October 20th, 2009, 06:04 PM I think that I have to say I really like it.
Thanks for sharing.
Telenator October 20th, 2009, 06:14 PM Nice work! I know what you mean about cracks in mahogany! Happened to me on my last project. Heartbreaking I tells ya!
boneyguy October 20th, 2009, 06:56 PM Thanks ya'll.
Nick JD October 20th, 2009, 07:15 PM Very nice.
shoretyus October 20th, 2009, 09:52 PM What did you use for pu's?
Sawarow October 20th, 2009, 10:19 PM Nice guitar, just curious why you have six neck mounting screws?
boneyguy October 21st, 2009, 01:39 AM Very nice.
Thanks Nick.
What did you use for pu's?
A friend of mine winds them. These are a sort of PAF style that I asked him to wind to my specs. The slug coils on each p/u are wound slightly hotter than the screw coils. The neck is about 7.8k and the bridge around 8.7k.
Nice guitar, just curious why you have six neck mounting screws?
I did that with the first guitar I made as well and I can't remember exactly why I decided to do it. I just figured I'd do the same with this one as well.It makes a very, very solid neck/body connection though. I can't really say if it makes any useful difference or not though.
hwestman October 21st, 2009, 04:33 AM Good concept! Looks very rock 'n' roll in an understated Zematitis (is that the right spelling?) way! Cool headstock!

I think it's Zematis. And to make a comparison is a very nice compliment. Thank you.
I believe Zematitis is a rare skin disease.

I like it a lot, looks great. The simplicity and clean look is nice, headstock is totally cool, good nice job.
I do use my middle position on two p/u guitars. A PRS McSoapy I have only has vol and tone. That keeps it nice and simple,. But I really do like the 4 pot set-up. I might be playing on one pick-up at a nice low volume, hit the toggle and the other p/u is set for some smoke, then toggle back to soft and sweet. I can't do that as quickly with the same accent using the 2 pots.
boneyguy October 22nd, 2009, 02:22 AM sweet sweet sweet!

Thank you both very much.
I like your idea of having each vol set differently for loudness. I always set up my guitars so that the bridge pickup is a bit hotter than the neck just by having it sit closer to the strings. That sort of accomplishes the same thing except that in your case you have a choice as to which pickup will be louder at any given time.
barkley October 22nd, 2009, 02:50 AM Nice work!
I cant quite see from the pics, is that thing a carved top?
treadwm October 22nd, 2009, 09:43 AM I'm assuming you had to angle the neck. Did you cut an angled pocket? And if so, could you explain your method? Thx.
I have something similar in progress based off a 65 MelodyMaker a friend has. Debating on how to angle the neck to accommodate the TOM bridge.

No, it's just a slab. I'd love to tackle a carved top someday though.

I debated on how to accomodate the TOM. It seems to me there are 3 approaches.
1. Angle the neck, or...
2. Recess the bridge into the body (I did this on my first guitar), or..
3. Make a shallower neck pocket, which is what I did on this guitar.
It's not clear in the previous photos but the neck pocket is not as deep as a typical pocket so the neck sits higher above the body to accomodate the TOM. The only worry I had doing it this way was how solid the connection would be between the neck and body. But using six screws to attach the neck makes a very solid connection probably not much different than a set neck I'm guessing.

I avoided cutting the pocket at an angle just because of the work involved. It would take me quite awhile to figure out how to make a decent jig for the job.
If someone knows how to do it I'd love to see it.
telepath October 22nd, 2009, 11:16 AM Beautifuuul ;)
Personally I'd love it even more with just one howlin' P90, but thats not a critisism! - just my take, because I currently lust after such a beast ;)
It's a right corker is that Sir!
Me like.

I already have an LP with 2 P90's and a weird sort of Strat copy that I put a pair of P90's in so I'm currently overstocked on P90's. I love 'em. And like you I also really dig the Jr.'s. Very cool.
cknowles October 22nd, 2009, 01:05 PM Stunning work. I'm making my own templates for my piney casters and agreee that they are more work than making the guitar!
You got everything right, the proportions are perfect, love the headstock and your Logo is Sick!

Thanks for the kind words.
Making templates from scratch is a real pain for sure. On this project I guess I had to make 4 in total. The body, the pickups, the neck pocket and the contol plate on the back. In fact I had to make 2 for the neck pocket because the first one didn't work out.
I did learn myself a little trick however from the first guitar I made. If you have to make your own cover plate for a control cavity here's what I do. After you've routed the cavity take the guitar to a photocopy place and photocopy the body so you get the exact dimensions of the route. Then just cut out the photocopy of the route and paste it on the material you'll be using for the cover and away you go. It really simplifies things greatly.
WHOA!
Very nice indeed!

Thank you.
