I'm interested in a AMI guitar from Art and Lutherie (Parlor size guitar) but I want to know the size of the neck. Is it thick, thin, in the middle?
Thanks

Well, I saw your thread days ago, but I hesitated to post because I do not own an A&L Ami parlour guitar. But since no one else is chiming in...

I've played the nylon string version (don't know if you're considering the steel string or the nylon). Back a year or so ago, I was asked about playing guitar in a Civil War re-enactors' group that stages shows in the public schools here. I knew enough to know that my Hohner G940 would not be even close to a period correct guitar for the gig. So I looked into options, and the A&L Ami parlour guitar seemed to be the most affordable option. I didn't get the gig (never even had the chance to audition; I guess they opted to stay with banjo and fiddle), so after playing an Ami a few times locally, I dropped the idea.

Cosnequently, I don't know if I can definitively answer your question about neck size. If you're thinking steel string, then my impressions of the nylon string one may or may not apply.

FWIW, I thought the A&L Ami is a fine little guitar. Very comfortable to play. The nylon string one is not great as far as projection goes, but then that shouldn't be a surprise. I'll bet the steel string version is better in that regard.

That said, one of the times I was test-driving it in the local store, I broke out of the camp songs genre and played an instrumental version of McCartney's "Blackbird" just for grins. When I finished playing and came up to the front of the store, another customer approached me and asked if I was the one playing "Blackbird." When I affirmed that I had been, he said, "That was some nice playing." So the projection couldn't be too bad, if my fingerstyle playing could be heard all over the store. No one else was playing in the store at that time, but a TV was playing some live concert footage, so there was some sonic competition. Anyway, take that FWIW, YMMV.

I would describe the neck as middle, but again, that's going on memory, having only played one 2-3 times last year. It was comfortable to play. The neck is Silverleaf Maple, the nut width 2" (nylon string version) and the scale length 24.84.

Hope this helps.

I've got a steel string Ami and I would call the neck in the middle. Nut width is 1.72", which is pretty standard. The profile is a medium C (but I've not measured it), not as thick as my early '80s Alvarez that has a rounded V shape.

I keep the Ami in my office for transcribing tunes and it is very comfortable to play. Everyone who has checked it out has commented that the sound is very good for a smaller guitar. Also, this guitar is very stable and stays in tune great, even with a lot of detuning and retuning on my part. Fit and finish was great right off the rack.

Hope this helps.

It's a comfortable neck, not too wide, moderate depth.

Have you tried emailing the company? I wrote and asked them about the gig bags they use and they responded within a day. I don't have the email address handy but you navigate there if you google "Art & Lutherie".

The one issue I had with the Ami is that the bracing was too heavy. With great difficulty (small soundhole) I was able to shave the braces until the sound opened up. Another guitar that might work for you and sound great is the Recording King ROS-06. Solid top, 12-fret, slotted headstock, vintage bridge design. A lot of guitar for $250. They are out of stock at the moment but should be available in the next couple of weeks.
