Here's a question: work (and not my musical career!!) may be taking me more often to countries with 208 wall voltage..so..
with existing amps with transformers designed for 110 can I use one of those step up transformers? and what is the upside ..or downside ??
and what about the converse situation...amps designed with EU transformers that I bring back to North America??

If you have a transformer with the correct wattage, then technically there will be no downside, except for the additional item to carry . . and it's weight.

Just take care to get a transformer that's completely symmetrical and correctly grounded.

Some amps have a switch on the back to let you choose 110/220. Those used to make me nervous when my kids were younger, because they were into flipping switches and generally shoving stuff into the VCR slot

Now I have an amp that takes either voltage without the need of an actual switch. it senses the voltage and automatically adjusts. Pretty cool.

Your best bet is to bring an amplifier with you that has a transformer that can be wired (externally or internally) for 117 or 230 V.Usually you can tell from the schematic if itīs possible.Limbe
