I am starting my first serious refinish on my 2003 Squier Affinity Strat. I plan on assembling some Telecasters and Esquires in the future, So I thought I would practice on a Stratocaster. I am taking it down to wood, I am gonna do a nitro finish. I used a heat gun and chisel on the body, with the help of my lovely bride, last night I got that completed. If anyone is interested, I found a 8 piece body that was finger jointed, and a thin veneer on the top and bottom.
Today consisted of a palm sander to get the remainder of finish off, and now I am hand sanding getting everything nice and smooth. At this point I would like to repeat something I have read either here or on the reranch site, if possible just buy a new unfinished body. I am not complaining, I got plenty of time, and not a lot of money, and I am doing this for the finish experience, but it is a chore. I have no work shed or garage, so I am using the back porch and kitchen table, except the power sanding, thankfully it was warmer today and I done that outside.
The neck was done last week, or at least pretty close to done. Sanding that is. I will have a while getting the body sanded, filled and such. But that gives me time to scrape up the pesos for all the new hardware and paint.
I will post as I make progress, and I will post pic's of it when I am done. Didn't see much need in posting as I go along just a lot of paint chips and sanding dust, but I guess if anyone's interested, I could put some up. Also would like to thank everyone who has posted tips and info on finishing and refinishing here. I would have probably made a mess of things already without those who came before me.
