New to bass.
What are some some songs that you guys really dig playing on bass that are simple? I'll start with 'hold on I'm coming'. Its really easy, for my, a beginner, can get a little funky. Just a blast to play.

Down on the Corner (CCR) and Mustang Sally. These songs are easy, funky and fun. Most anything in the 1-4-5 arrangement is relatively easy. A little more challenging is Come Together by the Beatles. Go on youtube and type in the name of the song you want to learn followed by "bass line" and you will find vids of folks playing the song on bass.

I agree, sittin' down and playing the bass is really fun.:grin:

Learn the Johnny Cash songbook. Good instruction on 1/2 note basslines. The lesson to be leaned is about note duration and keeping time.

"One More Hour of Blue" - (Bill Kirchen, Tied to the Wheel) is a good example of a walking country line.

Let the Good Times Roll - BB King plays the music of Louis Jordan - get your swing feel on. The LJ songs are easier than at first they appear. The horns make them sound a lot more complicated than they really are.

Then get off the three chord songs for a bit and learn 'All of Me', Autumn leaves'. The longer progressions will get you in the habit of remembering songs, not patterns. While learning say 'Autumn Leaves', remember the note duration and timing lessons from above and how to use them with a swing feel...

I'm teaching my son Green Onions ( Booker T & MG's) and Sweet Home Chicago ( Blues Brother version ). He's 12.

You could look for "Standing in The Shadows Of Love" book and learn some simple Motown stuff like " Aint To Proud To Beg "," Shotgun", " Road Runner"....

For me, being new to it, I'm really, really enjoying the percussiveness. Its a blast to just bounce between a couple notes and throw in muted sounds and stuff. Not I just need to give this borrowed bass a setup or find a way to buy one for myself :O

Birthday by the Beatles, another song based on a standard 12 bar type progression. All My Loving by the Beatles a nice walking bassline. Start by the Jam, one of the first songs I learnt (based on Taxman by the Beatles)

Duck Dunn, of Booker T/Stax records fame, is my idol as simple, funky, tasteful bass grooves go. Get the soundtrack to the Blues Brothers and dig in, but Green Onions is a great place to start.

Dusty Hill, ZZTop, is a master at the pulsing groove. Listen to Tube Snake Boogie for a prime example
