Has anyone put a Tele neck on a strat? Seems like it might be a close fit. My Tele neck is sooooo much faster and easier than my Strat neck that I am thinking of trying it. Just wonder if anybody ever did.

Tele neck on Stratcrossroads46 October 6th, 2009, 07:57 PM Has anyone put a Tele neck on a strat? Seems like it might be a close fit. I've come across them several times over the years - and the owners thought they were excellent. The look has never grabbed me though, I love strats, I love teles, but swapping headstocks looks a little funny to me. Practicality though - the ends of the fretboards are different shapes, and therefore the heels. Tele necks have a flat end, Strats a curved end. It's do-able either way, but I understand it involves some creative work to make it fit? A.B.Negative October 11th, 2009, 08:10 AM Yep, you'd need to round off the heel of the Tele neck or remove some wood from the Strat neck pocket to make it squarer. I remember seeing a photo of Tommy Bolin with a Strat that had a Tele neck, looked pretty good! thunderbyrd October 11th, 2009, 01:31 PM i've wanted to do the same thing, cause a tele neck on a strat is very strange-cool looking, but i have never tried. i do know that warmoth warns that a stock tele neck on a stock strat body is not intonate-able. so you might want to consider buying a body from them with the neck pocket already cut for a tele neck. I am pretty sure that a guy named Jay Rhine in Atlanta Ga. put it on there for him. Jay was doing alot of work for Skynyrd and 38 Special at the time. pullchord October 12th, 2009, 12:15 AM I own a mahogany hardtail I've had for 25 years that has a Tele neck on it. The neck is about 35 - 40 years old....maybe even older. The plate # is 32585. Never had the neck off it to check the date. Sadly, I had a roadie move the B and high E string tuners under like a "four over two" Music Man and the excess headstock rounded off which of course ruined the authenticity. But the neck plays beautifully on the Strat bod which has the best low E sustain of any Strat I've ever played. studebaker hawk October 13th, 2009, 10:36 PM I think Ian Moore played one of these also A.B.Negative October 14th, 2009, 04:09 AM Hmmm... I have a DR Parts Strat body and a Squier Tele neck. I feel a project coming on! wolfman63 October 14th, 2009, 11:32 AM I can't say for sure with Fender Stats and Teles but it worked great with my G&Ls. No mods needed, just swap. djphelan01 October 14th, 2009, 12:05 PM I haven't seen too many but I like the look. I've seen quite a few strat necks on teles though. bullitt October 14th, 2009, 03:05 PM Got an E series 86 Bullet that is basically that set up,its agreat guitar. otterhound October 14th, 2009, 06:28 PM Page 77 of the first issue of Guitar Aficionado Magazine shows Joe Perry with two left handed Strats that have Tele necks . I have a Cherry Tele neck here and a '93 Strat that is very reliced . Could use a re-fret . Hmmm. D#%n you ! I could swap the tuners and cut a nut . RodeoTex October 14th, 2009, 06:38 PM A Strat neck will screw right onto a Tele body (leaving gaps), but to put a Tele neck on a Strat some wood will have to be removed, either from the neck or body. I'd recommend alter the least valuable of the two. Deaf Eddie October 14th, 2009, 07:04 PM Pretty good discussion in this thread: Forgive me, I put a Strat neck on my Tele (http://www.tdpri.com/forum/telecaster-discussion-forum/127285-fogive-me-i-put-strat-neck-my-tele.html#post1459549) (that links to my post, but you can scroll up to the OP). http://www.deaf-eddie.net/tdpri-drawings/neck-swap.jpg otterhound October 14th, 2009, 11:02 PM A Strat neck will screw right onto a Tele body (leaving gaps), but to put a Tele neck on a Strat some wood will have to be removed, either from the neck or body. I'd recommend alter the least valuable of the two. That would be the neck . RodeoTex October 15th, 2009, 01:25 AM That would be the neck . Well, there ya go then. FWIW, a Strat body pocket requires a neck with the heel rounded off at a 5" radius, with the corners rounded to 1/4" radius. otterhound October 15th, 2009, 09:43 AM I just might use the original to make a template . It plays great and is naturally scalloped , but the frets are very worn . Flat and grooved . This Strat was played a lot and loved as much from all indications . I'll post when done . sabby October 16th, 2009, 02:09 AM Sadly, I look like this guy. I wear boxers, however. http://assets.mog.com/pictures/0000/0006/7609/images/1215706741.jpg Stratotwanger October 16th, 2009, 02:27 AM Fender has had several stock guitars with the Strat heads on Teles and vice versa, they've been out for decades. sneakyjapan October 16th, 2009, 09:33 AM mine`s a Fender Japan and says order made in the pocket... http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i198/shot-glass/fjtelestrat001-1.jpg otterhound October 16th, 2009, 10:24 AM The neck that I was referring to is a custom done USACG made from my Cherry . I received it undrilled . I drilled it and mounted it on a Tele body that I had here . Apparently , when I drilled the body and neck , I must have located the holes closer to the body than Fender does . I can't say if it is right or wrong , but it fits the neck pocket of my "93 Strat like a glove . Yes , there are gaps in the corners , but the butt end of the neck could not fit better . I think that this was just meant to be . YES ! I just hope that I can intonate it in the end . Post Toastie October 17th, 2009, 01:31 PM The Squier 51 is a Strat body with a Tele neck. I am not sure if Squier modified the neck or body to make the fit. BigDaddyLH October 17th, 2009, 01:46 PM I don't know if it's been mentioned, but USACG will take any style neck (Tele, Strat etc...) and put either a Tele or a Strat heel shape on it. And of course rout either pocket into your choice of body. So you could have a Tele neck and Tele body with a rounded Strat heel! See if anyone notices that! otterhound October 17th, 2009, 05:57 PM Way too subtle for me . Maybe sometime in the future . mojo_max October 21st, 2009, 02:32 PM I had a 1997 MIK Squier Tele neck on a 1997 MIC Squier Strat body with no issues. otterhound October 23rd, 2009, 09:15 PM I'm playing it now and I like it . Pics when the sun comes out . otterhound October 24th, 2009, 02:49 PM OK , the sun isn't out . http://i549.photobucket.com/albums/ii389/otterhound1/PA170002.jpghttp://i549.photobucket.com/albums/ii389/otterhound1/PA170003.jpg I'm liking it . artopee October 30th, 2009, 07:18 AM Here you can see the clone of famous (RIP) Finnish guitar player Albert Järvinen's "Roadrunner-Strat": http://www.monsteramps.fi/site/?lan=3&page_id=70 microphonic squeal October 30th, 2009, 04:12 PM [QUOTE=andrewr;2071415]I can't watch vids at work - so apologies if this is it, but Allen Collins in Lynyrd Shynyrd played a strat with a tele neck. This is what I love about TDPRI, reminds me of things i haven't remembered in decades. Yeah, Jay Rhine was the real deal. He put a Dimarzio super distortion in the neck of my Tele about '76. Rhine was on Glenwood avenue if I remember right. That was the first replacement pickup I ever had, and wasn't about to chisel it in myself. E5RSY October 30th, 2009, 05:57 PM Hendrix played one a bit - Newport, 1969. http://www.electric-guitars-rock.com/images/jimistrattele.jpg | ||
