It's not your father's 5E3...

Holy cr@p! I thought I was nuts with hacking up the classic circuits. This guy takes the cake:

Good lord - parts from a Firefly build, 6K6 power tubes, a super low B+, and this is what happens to a 5E3. I know he's not banging out old chestnuts on a Tele, but that's some frighteningly gonzo'd out Marshall rock tones pouring out of that little devil.

Great. Another tone to chase for the rest of my life...

The right speaker cabinet sure makes a difference. Most of the Firefly clips I've liked were Gibson guitars into a Marshally speaker cab.

BTW, he's using the textbook RCA setup for 6K6s. Guess you don't need wacky operating conditions to get good tone after all!

I wonder what his preamp voltages are. I also wonder what speakers are in that Marshall cab.

That sounds much less woofy and less saggy than typical 5E3's with humbuckers in em. In his posts under the clip he mentions he used 0.022uF couplers - I wonder if he used them everywhere (all four spots), or just in the preamp channels (two spots).

I haven't used a Gibson 500T pickup in years, but aiming that at 12AX7's in any 5E3 will give you a ton of overdrive... brown up the preamp with lower voltages, use a lower output 6K6 instead of 6V6 and that's bound to be even more gainy fun!

Is he one of our TDPRI shock-brothers? He mentioned he's already rebuilt it as a mini JCM800 HAHA. Neverending tweaking, modding, and rebuilding... we need a support group.

I also wonder what speakers are in that Marshall cab.

I believe that they're V30's. Or G12T-75's. Pretty certain that they aren't G12M's, G12H's, or anything of that ilk.
