Seymour Duncan Phat Cat......BADFISH May 19th, 2004, 07:56 PM Anyone hear this pickup yet? I Need a pickup , for a Humbucker route. This Phat Cat may be the way I go. Phat Cat Or Harmonic Design Z-90 Any Views? The Snowman May 20th, 2004, 06:32 AM Hamer Artist model and they are great pups....really sing kinda like a cross between a humbucker and a single coil......you'll love em if ya can find them....check out the Hamer Fan Club...they get rave reviews there and they are reverened over there...later ....don TwinReverb May 20th, 2004, 09:06 AM in my Hamer Monaco. I especially like the neck pup. This one has a tone that is unreal (but I like neck pups anyway...). The Phat Cat's have single coil spank, but also the fullness of a HB. It did take me some time to find the right height for the pups. Too high and they can be too shrill. But at the "right" distance they are really something. YMMV of course You also might try a Fralin Unbucker in the neck position. Very cool indeed. Very clear on the bass strings (its selling point), so no muddyness.....I have one in my swamp ash Keith R. look-a-like Tele (with a coil split). I have a Steve Kersting T-90 in the bridge.....very good too. 8) Kelsey May 20th, 2004, 11:51 AM I have a Phat Cat neck pickup in one of my ash American Series Teles. It sounds great -- fat midrange, plenty of high end cut, and just enough bass to satisfy without any muddiness. It is pretty quiet for a P90-style single coil, and has that SC openness that you'd expect with output nearing HB territory. It matches well with the SD Jerry Donahue lead pickup in the bridge, which is slightly overwound, and the combination of the 2 sounds real nice and is hum-canceling. Highly recommended! BlackRose May 23rd, 2004, 12:23 PM "Phat" is a great description of these pickups!! Like a single coil sort of but much fuller. If you are having trouble finding a set e-mail me ... kgovero June 4th, 2004, 02:50 PM i put a set of phat cats in my grandpa's old Kay archtop and he and i both were amazed ... of course, the nature of the archtop has a big part of the sound too! i got the set at www.gtrheaven.com ... the way they are wound, in the middle position, they are hum cancelling! AWESOME! John E June 4th, 2004, 04:10 PM Only tried them a couple of times in a Hamer Newport, they seemed a bit "middley" to me... of course it was in a store and the amp selection wasn't huge... also I obviously didn't have the opportunity to play with pup height. I did play a Schecter Hellcat in the same store that had Duncan vintage firebird mini-hb's... they were PHENOMENAL. |
