Anyone Try a Shotgun Mic?

Would a shotgun mic work in a church setting with a PA system for picking up a comment from someone in the audience, or would there be too much feedback?

In a church, which is likely to be somewhat reverberant, or "lively" in acoustic, a shotgun is not a good choice, unless you can get very close...which defeats what you are suggesting! There is also the possibility of howlround if you are in front of speakers.

The wireless suggestion is good, so if you can get a handheld mic to the speaker, it will be very much better!

Why not just give a wireless mic to everyone in the congregation?

Any mic will feedback if pushed to the point of completing the cycle. Just walk around the room with the mic testing it for hot spots , adjust your EQ. You should be good to go.But I would suggest a decent hand held wireless mic.
