I had a thought about a custom bass the other day. Please bear in mind that I am primarily a 6 string player and am thinking about building a bass for mucking about at home with.

Basicly, take a regular J-Bass layout as far as pickups are concerned, and substitute the bridge pickup for that of a P-Bass.

I havnt got the circuit worked out, but I was wondering what bass player thought of the idea and if it would work sound/tone wise?

The P-Bass pickup is voiced to be right in the middle where it is on a P-Bass. You could increase the winding and magnet size to give it the extra oomph it would need in a bridge position application.

Have you seen the basses with a J-Bass pickup at the bridge and a P-bass pickup in the middle? They seem to sound real good.

Yeah. Seen plenty of them. Mats got one an it sounds real good. I just wondered what would hapen if I reversed it as I had never seen it done before. I guess that voicing thing is probably why. That said, I goat a whole lot of teles I want before I even think about starting to build a bass
