ES-335 Club!

Did a search 4 ways to Sunday, no ES-335 Club. The guitar that most complements a Telecaster, was the root of so much roots rock, blues and funk? No love for the ES-335? What am I missing here?
I love my Tele, but come on guys!

Telepathy... that's just what I was thinking. Well, that and the 339 (which I'm hoping to bag this week).

On another thread one of the guys said the 339 is a 'perfect compliment to the Tele'... ditto the 335. Come on guys and let's have some pics.

PS. Do I have to start a separate ES-339 Club?

1966 ES-335 purchased from a friend in 1968 together with a '66 Deluxe Reverb, paid $200 for both. Now THAT was a score. Too bad I was so young and dumb I don't even remember what happened to the amp. At least I still have the guitar, and B.B. signed it for me ~

Alright, I couldn't stand that there was no ES 335 club! I love my Tele, but my Tele and an ES 335 is THE two guitar set-up of all time, imho. Let's get this rolling guys and show off your eye candy! I'm in the process of buying my first ES-335 so no pics yet.

I owned a 339 and frankly, as nice as it was it just didn't have the tone I had in my head for the blues and classic rock I'm after on a 335 (Alvin Lee, Clapton, Moore, etc.).

LONG LIVE the Gibson ES 335!!!

While the TDPRI 335 Club must have more members and if it helps the squad numbers for the team can a USA Epiphone Riviera be considered for a place on the substitutes bench....it is a 1993 Gibson Custom Historic and one of 250 made....Cherry red with mini-humbuckers and frequensator....superb instrument.
While the Epiphone Riviera is of the same family as the Gibson 335 also for consideration is a not to distant relation and offspring a Corona made sunburst
Guild Starfire 4 .....a great guitar and excellent alternative with that 335 DNA.

After a couple of years looking for just the right ES 335, I will be bringing home a Larry Carlton signature in a couple or three weeks. I have heard rave reviews from actual owners about the gorgeous finish, tone quality of craftsmanship. I'll post a pic as soon as it arrives!

I've got a cherry red '03 335. Really love it, but this current band is built around twang...so it's the beat up Tele for just about everything.

I have a cherry red Ibanez Art Core knock off of the 335, really like it a lot. Especially when I am working on a new scale with lots of stretch. The shorter scale length really helps. But I usually go back to the tele sound before the end of the practise session. I'm trying hard to relearn what I lost over 30 years of raising kids. Both guitars are great!

I've been wanting a hollow body in my collection for years but never had everyting come together 'till this week- It's not a Gibson but I'm very happy with my pawn shop found Washburn HB32DM out the door for $245 it was dirty and needed new strings but has no dings or scratches and I'm realy liking the distressed/aged copper hardware and it's warm woody tone and find it very comparable to the 335's that i've test driven-I'll have to wait a while till the honeymoon's over to be more objective but for now I'm lovin' it-Brian

Mine's an '02 in translucent red with beautifully flamed top, sides and back. In normal light, it just looks like a red finish, but when the sun or spotlight hits, the whole top just explodes. Picture to follow. I used her live for a bit, but between the Tele and my strats and the new PRS 513, she's sitting at home in her case. That guitar is all over the new album of one of my bands -we're mixing right now and I'm realizing how great the tones are...

I had a problem with the first two strings-I'm a Fender scale guy, and they were just too easy to bend, so I upped the thickness on the E and B strings-did the trick. Also wasn't crazy about the '57 Classics paired with OD/Dist pedals, that is until I got my Zendrive-now THAT is some Godlike tone! Also, it's hard to get used to the strap hanging behind the neck instead of at the upper horn...

Great axe, and she is NOT for sale!

I've seen one other like this. I'll get better pictures this weekend. The switch on the lower horn there cut the pic-up coils in half and makes it single guitar like a fender! This stock from the factory. Its about a 1972 model but it plays like a dream. One really sweet guitar. Its in the background and it called wine red color. don't play it much since I love my teles.

The color is called Tranluscent Brown by Gibson.
It was first released in '99 and I think made for a year and a half or two years.

I have seen a couple others but they are not all that common.
It is hard to put down.
The tuners BTW are Schaller crank tuners.
They are nice in that they can be tightened up every couple of years and hold tuning well.

I don't know but if you sned a message to Donimarte who posted it he can probably tell us.

Edit; I actually just posted on the and asked we'll see if we find out.

BTW, I too play my 335's through a 5E5A mostly and it does kill.
Albert Collins tones come alot from yourself though I have found playing his stuff on Teles, Strats, and 335's.
So though the equipment in condusive to that it's mostly you then.

Easy to see why it comes out easily since Albert's style gets down so deep inside of you.

Purchased a new ES335 Custom Fat Neck.

I have owned many 335s over the last 30 years, however this new one may be the best new ES335 I have ever played.

Will post picks of new one soon.

The Guitar below was my last ES335. A Historic 63 Block. Sounded killer, however fit and finish left a lot to be desired.

Howdy,

My ES-335's a blast. It's a 1980 model which sports SD '59s, instead of those awful stock Dirty Fingers. These days it's played mostly through my new Carmen Ghia; what a pair!

Neck is a bit thin for me, otherwise really nice guitar, USA 57 Classics are the stock pickups. It has that "funky" or "honky" or whatever you want to call it 335 tone in spades.

<snip> The guitar that most complements a Telecaster... <snip>

Yeah, what is it about that? I'm not saying I disagree, but I'm curious. I've said elsewhere in this forum that if I were to go for a Gibson, it would be a 335. I love the look of 'em, and a friend's that I've played is just great, plays like butter. What is it about 335s that complements Teles?

Oh, and BTW, great thread. I came here mainly for the eye candy, and it did not disappoint. But as I read the OP, I just so much related to that statement, but couldn't quite put my finger on why.

Drew Thomas
February 20th, 2010, 03:13 AM
I don't own a 335(I'd love to have one though) but I would imagine it goes something like sweet and sour soup. Two radically different tastes that end up working well together. The telecaster has the sweet, bright single coil bite and twang, while the 335 has a fat, dark, and warm sound.

bluesjuke
February 20th, 2010, 04:58 AM
A 335 can bite, bark and even do a little twang too....

........and moan as well.

Martin R
February 20th, 2010, 12:01 PM
The first thing is the humbuckers. That gives a whole different sound than the Tele single coils. I mostly use the neck pickup. It's dark and full. The bridge pup has a nice pop to it, even a little twang...but that's what I have the Tele for. The semi-hollow body adds a nice round feel.

I had a Travis Bean T1000 with HUGE humbuckers. That guitar would rock. We had some extra time during a recording session and kicked into Down By the River while I was holding the Bean. It sounded great. Then dove into Hurricane. I switched to the 335. Both takes had the guitars plugged into a cranked 65 Deluxe.

I thought it was just a fun thing to do. But after listening to the two songs, I decided to sell the Bean...no need for it. The 335 is incredibly versatile. It's a great compliment when you need something that doesn't twang.

(If you go to the link below listen to Doggone Lonesome. The 335 is the first lead and rhythm track...the Tele is the second lead and doubles the bass line.)

LGOberean
February 27th, 2010, 01:42 PM
Thanks for your replies to my earlier query. I have played a 335, and I do get the 'buckers vs. single coils rationale. But lots of guitars have humbuckers; shoot, many Tele players have 'em. So its not the pups alone. Hence my curiosity about the 335 finding such favor among Tele owners.

I have another question about the 335. What amp do you consider the perfect amp for a 335? This could be construed as an amp question, and it is, but its about an amp in connection with this specific guitar, so I'm asking it here. What amp would you pair (or have paired) with a 335?

bluesjuke
February 28th, 2010, 08:59 AM
I have used my 335's in so many different amps that have sounded great together.
I do use all Tweeds now, Deluxes and a Pro.
Have had Bassman too with them.

Sound good in all but react differently with each.

Very sweet in larger amps as in the Bassman.
I could get the sweetest feedback/ sustain thriough it that was very controllable.
Even when I used to have a Blues Jr. I loved what they did together.

The Pro and a 335 are most likely my favorite combination though.

I'll join the club. My guitar just celebrated its 21st birthday! According to the Guitar Dater it was made 2/16/1989. I purchased it new in '89. Changes include: '57 Classic/Classic +pick ups, Nashville to ABR-1 Bridge conversion, GOTOH aluminum tailpiece and Tone Pros locking studs, Gibson amber switch tip.

Been looking at 335 type guitars and the Epiphone models are probably the only ones within my budget at this point.

When I wanted to get into Telecasters so I bought a couple of Squier Affinity BSB Teles (which I have since learned are the bottom of the barrel) which I enjoyed playing enough to buy an American Standard Natural Ash Tele as soon as I could afford one. What a difference... (I still love my Squiers, though!)

My question to those who know - Should I just bite the bullet and save enough to go straight for a 'real' Gibson, or get a mid-range Epiphone Dot or Casino now - or are the Epiphone guitars of good enough quality that I won't kick myself for rushing into one?

I started with cheap amps and guitars - just to actually get some stuff to play rather that just dream about playing. The problem is that none of the beginning stuff is even good enough now to trade in on the better stuff.

I know life is too short for cheap shoes. Same with guitars? Or is Epiphone 'good enough' in this case? I'm a solitary player so far - just learning to play really. But I do appreciate quality.

I know it's all opinion, and I've probably already answered my own question, but I'd like to hear what others think.

Though the Epiphone is not a bad deal for the money it IMO doesn't equal the bargin on a Squierby comparison.

Once you get one unless you soon get that type of another brand that is alot further up the scale of build quality you will hunger for an actual 335.

There are some good ones out there like Tokai and I hear the Edwards.

The truth of the matter though is that only a Gibson 335 is a 335 and that's where you will end up eventually if a 335 fits your style.

That's what happens to almost everyone that likes 335's.

I have two and have had several others in the past and nothing less satifies most people in this department.

Are 335 owner wannabes allowed?

I can only dream of being able to own a Gibson, but this is what I have my eye on:

Epiphone Dot Studio in Worn Vintage Sunburst. I think I'd put white or cream pickup rings on it, though.

I don't understand why they call 'em Dots when they don't have dot fingerboard markers, though.

Coincidentally, about the same time this thread's discussion was going on, GC's monthly catalog arrived, and they had a slight discount on the Epiphone Dot. So I went in to the local GC and played one, but it just didn't compare to my friend's Gibson 335. The sales guy, wanting to make a sale, of course, put a couple of other Epis in my hands. The Casino was much nicer. Makes me wonder how much better the Elitist Casino is. More than twice the guitar since it is more than twice the price? Hmmm...

As I understand it, the Casino is a true hollow body. The 335, and the Epi Dot are semi-hollow...there's a block of wood down the center of the body.

Yeah, I know...and the warmth and sustain of the Gibbie 335, due to its center block, is certainly greater than the Casino. That said, the Casino does have that slim body profile and the P-90s (I love P-90s), and has a nice warm, clean tone.

Yes. ES 335 is the name Gibson gave that model. There are many guitars that look like or are constructed in the same way but are not 335's, in the same way as a Ford pickup isn't a Chevy pickup - both very similar but different brands/models...

Just a note for those considering an Epiphone. I was all for getting a Sheraton II until I tried one. I must say that the bad strings didn't do justice to the guitar, it was quite annoying to play it because of the bad strings.

But putting that aside, I looked closely to the overall finish of the guitar. Quite decent in comparison to other guitars. I studied hundreds of pictures of Sheraton II's these past weeks and their neck had a much nicer finish than the one I tried today. The one I tried today had a fresh feel to it, it was probably new stock. The neck's back was completely black, which put me off immediately. The finish is comparable to the one my Epiphone Les Paul Custom has - nothing out of this world and honestly a bit faulty. The fret inlays are pretty but not quite refined, what makes the neck look kind of unfinished. The same for my Epi LP Custom.

I thought I was on my way home when I saw the gibson es-335 hanging and begging to be tried. I confess that I have never - ever - tried a Gibson of that caliber because I knew I could not afford it and would have a pair of eyes on my neck if I dared to try one. But today the owner of the shop was there, a friendly old man that smiled when seeing my awe at the Gibbie... We chatted for a while and he encouraged me to have a go, for the sake of fun.

I had never realized that the level of craftsmanship put into an instrument could be so immaculate. The Sheraton stood no chance besides this ES-335. I know, the comparison is unfair, but man, what a difference!!

I put everything on the scale: the amount of money being put on an instrument (Sheraton II) that would never come close to the ES-335, even if changing the whole electrical parts to the same of the Gib. And besides, why was I considering buying the Sheraton in the first place? Simple: as a substitute to the expensive Gib. If I did all the changes I wanted on the Sheraton, it would end-up costing more than half the price of the Gib (the Gib was on an incredible sale, 38% cheaper than usual).

Result: I financed the purchased to pay it in parcels and joined the ES-335 club!!!

Welcome to TDPRI dreamguy and congrats on the new 335!

Many buy less expensive models that are similar but the goal is a 335 and most end up there eventually.

You went right to the top.
Some less expensive versions are good guitars but they never will be a 335 and most come to see that and buy one after going through what you started to but avoided.

Been thinking about this Epiphone Casino vs. Gibson 335s thing. Granted, I've played no Epi that is the equal of the 335. And I've already conceded that the Casino is not semi-hollow. That said, the Casino I've played was very nice, especially for the money. If someone can't afford/justify a Gibson ES335, a Casino at a fraction of the cost may be a very affordable and nice alternative.

And the Casino was good enough for Paul, George & John, after all...

I own only another electric guitar, Epiphone Les Paul (Custom Silverburst Limited Ed.). I only started playing electric a bit more than a year ago (for many weird reasons), but have played acoustic for nearly 20 years. I guess that's why this semi-hollow felt so right.

I think Teles have defined much of the music I love to hear, and one lovely day I might become a lucky owner too. But for now I guess I'll have to stick to this one until it is at least paid...

Casinos feature PAF pickups, which are single coils. Some people deliberately change their humbuckers to P90s, and they do sound smooth, specially on guitars like Casino or other "Jazz guitars".

This is the same pic I used to introduce myself yesterday.....

It's a 71 Es-335 and been my main guitar for the 20 years I've had it. The Bigsby is on with a vibramate, a recent addition. I've taken it off only to put it back on again. I love the sound with the Bigsby but don't like how it has changed the balance of the guitar. The rest of the hardware/pick ups is stock, the vibramate and the roller bridge can easily be reversed and leave no signs of it having been there.
I was playing at a pretty big festival last Saturday (for the Margaret River Surf Pro) and the sound guys were all over checking it out. One offered me what I'd consider fair market value for it but it's my favorite old friend and would be pretty hard to replace.

Uhh...FraKo...? You out there?

My question was not rhetorical. Given the fact that one Gibson ES 335 costs more than the combined total of the last three guitars I bought, I am interested in how copies play/sound. If I were in a place in life where money was no object, I'd go for a Gibson. But given my current situation and the fact that low end Gibson 335s are about $2,250, I'll probably never invest that kind of money in one. My Logan Teles will always be my main electric guitars.

I have a '79 dot neck with the same darker brown sunburst that FatmanStratman has. I'm the original owner.

I've removed the pick guard and replaced the pickups. The neck has a Seymour Duncan custom '59 and the bridge pickup is a Seymour Duncan "Laid Beck" so it has serious jazz in the neck and serious bite at the bridge.

I'll have to find a picture to post here.

Yep, 335's are wonderful.

Sorry I have to share this on another thread - I waited 9 months for this baby - it was stuck at my folks house in Hawaii trying to figure out how to get it here without breaking the bank. Hooray for bolt-on necks - they unbolted it, sawed the original cheapo case in half and shipped it ion two boxes - magic show..
This has been modded, the original tremolo was removed and a trapeze and Les Paul bridge added. The Pick guard is also new set up really close to the E string for fast lead work I guess.

It was very quick to reassemble and set up and it embarrassingly sounds better for most things than my G&L ASAT Special Semihollow. The bridge idea I am pretty sure makes all the tonal difference on these. I will leave it as it came.

This is a true hollow body except for the post underneath the bridge - it is in nearly mint condition having set under a bed for 20+ years - the finish is still gorgeous.

Sorry for my late reply, brother.

Mine is a discontinued color from the very 1st XV 900 run, #12..., but I know that recently Guitar Fetish reintroduced the semi-hollow line, with new headstocks (different from the mirror-Zemaitisque featured on mine), here they are:

http://store.guitarfetish.com/xvsehoflmaal.html

I guess something changed with the new models, and I hope they mount BETTER tuners than the ones I found on mine, since they looked OK but were really pieces of crap. But, apart from this detail, the guitar is gorgeous. I mounted a set of Gotoh new tuners and now everything's OK (NOTE: you need conversion bushings if you need to change the tuners).

Very nice body, gorgeous flame maple top, great pick up's (maybe a little too hot, not to say bold, but you can correct this by lowering them). AFA I can imagine, it's all maple, neck included: so I would describe the sound as a little on the high-mid-aggessive side when unplugged, and the sound when plugged maintains the same carachter (that's a positive thing).

The pup's are split coil, that adds a great versatility. When splitted, the sound doesn't change radically: volume jumps down, and you get a less bassy sound.

Other outstanding features: DOUBLE ACTION TRUSS ROD (I didn't know at all, the guitar came with no instruction sleeve or booklet) and a very angled neck, closer to Gibsons than to Epiphones.

Gold hardware finish tends to fade a little bit: I would suggest to choose a chrome equipped model.

Eventually: this is a cheap guitar, but if you consider that

1) body is OK, well mounted, no extra glue, with decent (glossy) finish

2) hardware is decent (apart old tuners)

3) neck is OK (not too chunky, similar to a late 60's 335)

4) pup's are more than decent, GFS quality

I still think is one of the best low-price 335ish axes available.

There's also a Casino-like model with dogear pick up's: looks nice, anyway it's different from the original since the Xaviere features the same semi-acoustic body (with wooden center-block) of the XV900, while the Casino is full acoustic.

I had to make a hard decision recently and decided to sell my Larry Carlton signature 335 (I just couldn't get on with the narrow 1 9/16" nut width)

I've just got this new Dot Reissue and I'm really pleased I made the switch

I chose this guitar as it has the closest specs to the Mr335 guitar (60's one piece mahogany neck, poplar/maple laminate top & back, Grover tuners, 57 Humbuckers) and she sounds every bit as good as the Carlton did to my ears.

However, at 1 11/16" nut width it's a lot more comfortable in my hands (strange how that 1/8" makes all the difference):

Wow some utter, utter beauties in here.
Love that Sheraton above too

I have a more modest Sheridan A600.

No-one else seems to have heard of these Sheridans!
They are distributed by Westfield(?) in the UK it seems, as their 'pro' line.

Anyway, I got it totally mint & boxed, but 2nd user off the 'bay for a less than a fifth of the RRP.
However it came with EMG HZ's which were wholly inappropriate.

I have put in some more appropriate, and (relatively!) gentle Alnico III vintage voiced pups and it now a very sweet guitar that can warble, sing - and howl.

Nice fast dark 'board, Grover tuners, all seems v. nice quality build.
Always wanted a 335 style, and I'm happy!

Well it was introduced as an upgrade to the 335!

Yes, indeed, that is a great pic of a beautiful guitar.

The Epiphone Sheraton was introduced as an upgrade to the Gibson 335? Really?

Really.

Oh, well...I guess that clears that up then!

Seriously, I am willing to accept this claim, but to this point, all you have done is state a claim. Personally I've read very little about 335s and Sheratons, so I'm open to the possibility that it may be true, and if so, I'd genuinely like to know that.

But this claim doesn't seem to track with what little I do know, so I'd like to hear the story/be directed to a resource for this. Thanks.

Just wanna save this post and bring back some of the "knowledge"

OK...before we go any further here's a little history lesson...The original Kalamazoo-made Sheraton model came along in 1958 as an "upgrade' to the Gibson ES-335 that was introduced in the spring of 1958 and made use of component parts Gibson received when it bought Epiphone in 1957...parts such as the New York single coil pickups and Frequensator tail pieces...

1959 Sheraton:

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized %1%2 and weights %3.

By 1961 the supply of original Epiphone parts had been exhausted and this resulted in a re-design of some of the Epiphone models including the Sheraton. The re-design included replacing the New York single coil pickups with the then-new "PAF Mini Humbucker" pickups which had been designed to fit in the rout of the new York single coil. By the way, these were NEVER called "New York Mini Humbuckers" until the late 1990's when some clueless putz in Epiphone marketing used that phrase in catalog copy... perhaps in attempts to validate and legitimize the rather generic-sounding Asian pickups by alluding to a possible USA historical connection.

1963 Sheraton:

The Sheraton was made through-out the 1960's until domestic Epiphone production ended in August of 1970 (Kalamazoo Epiphones were still shipped into very early 1971). During their production run they were offered with both the Frequensator tail piece and various vibratos such as Bigsbys and Epiphone's Vibra-Tone and always had Mini humbuckers with the exception of the first four years or so when they had two New York single coils.

In about 1975 in response to the improving quality of Japanese guitars and Gibson's inability to sell instruments within Japan (due to trade restrictions and cost-prohibiting tariffs and taxation) Gibson contracted with Matsumoku, the parent company of the Aria and other Asian brands, to market a line of higher-end guitars limited to the domestic Japanese market. Gibson had previously contracted with Matsumoklu to make the first Japanese-made Epiphones in 1971 but this line of instruments were markedly lower in quality to the new line of thin lines which included a Casino, a Riviera, a Sheraton and an Emperor. By about 1979 the line had proved popular and distribution was extended world-wide though there were still some instruments made that were exclusive to the Japanese market. These Sheratons were only offered with full-sized humbuckers. Initially they were also only offered with a stop tail piece but later in the run models with Frequensators were also offered.

Early 80's Matsumoku-made Sheraton :

In 1986 Henry J. and company bought Gibson and decided to offer a line of Korean-made Epiphones. With bottom-line increasing cost-cutting in place, one of the first of these models was the "Sheraton II" which was only offered with full-sized humbuckers and stop tail pieces and was named the "Sheraton II" to avoid confusion with the Matsumoku-made Sheraton that was still in production. Another distinction was the use of the "Epiphone By Gibson" headstock logos on the Korean-made Epiphones. This early Korean-made line was made by Samick.

In 1987 Terada began to make the Japanese-exclusive line of Epiphones and their line also included a Sheraton model though again it was only offered with full-sized humbuckers:

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized %1%2 and weights %3.

In 1993/1994 to celebrate 100 years of Epiphone and Gibson, Gibson made a limited run of some of the original Epiphone models such as the Riviera, Sheraton and Emperor and this time the Epiphone models had mini humbuckers. These were made in Nashville and Bozeman and had nitro-cellulose finishes.

Also in about 1994 Epiphone began to use contract factories in Korea such as Peerless ("R" alpha prefix in serial number) Saein ("I" alpha prefix), Unsung ("U" alpha prefix), as well as the original Samick production ("S" alpha prefix) though by 1998 Samick ran into financial problems and discontinued production for a few years while getting back on track. I've never seen a Peerless-made Sheraton but the other factories made them. There may be a slight superiority of the earlier Samick-made Sheratons but this superiority is negligible at best.

In about 1997 Epiphone offered a John Lee Hooker Sheraton as part of their "USA Series" which was actually made in Japan (and "assembled" in Nashville). There had also been a Korean-made Hooker Sheraton with goofy graphics. The Terada-made Hooker Sheratons were offered with either a stop tail piece (called "The '64 Sheraton II") or a Frequnsator tail piece (called The '64 Sheraton I) and came with a nitro-cellulose finish. Following the Hooker Sheraton Epiphone came out with the Elite (later the Elitist) Sheratons with mini humbuckers and Frequensators but with polyurethane finishes.

The contract factories continued making Sheratons into the early 2000's and now there's a transition to all-Chinese production of Epiphone guitars. So...for the most part the "Sheraton II" refers to a Korean-made Sheraton.

The vintage Sheratons (1958-1970) have become quite pricey (>$5K) but the Matsumoku Sheratons from the 80's are very good guitars for the money and can be had for under $800. The early Samick-made Korean and Korean contract factory-made Sheratons can be had for under $600. Generally good values for the money but as with anything, the quality does fluctuate and every guitar has to be examined on its own merits. I personally won't consider anything made in China so you do so at your own peril...

I haven't seen the new one in that finish yet.

I love the figuring on yours as I tend to lean towards plaintops more.
Congrats on it, I think you made an excellent trade!

The '99 I posted has been sold only to please a wife (Of course mine!) about a month after i bought the '06 '59 Historic SB I posted previously.

It was between my R8 and that 335 and I kept the R8.
A big part of this decision was that if I sold the R8 I knew GAS for antoher would come so I tried to put what I felt aside in deciding.

I did however like the '99 335 more but I had to clean up some wiring issus with th R8 and knew the 335 would go fast.
Actually sold it in a little more than an hour.

So for a little while I did have three 335s (my '03 '59 Histoiric being the third).

I'll miss that one for the rest of my days as I liked it every bit as much as th HIstorics.
There was something very special about it that would fill another thread.
The short run down is the sustain, richness, balance, and note bloom to die for.

It was on the lighter side too around 8 lbs.

On the R8 I retified the wiring and actuall raised the neck opickup up high and got great clarity ou of it which surprised me.
I guess when I had went low with it in the past it was too low for that particular pickup.

I agree, the '57 classics on my 335 are GREAT sounding pickups. I don't really understand why many people change them out right away? I personally like them better that Burstbuckers...they sound more meaty, yet have just the right clarity for me.

What do you (all members) think is the perfect amp for the 335 for blues, jazz and rock? (small to medium venues) I've been eyeing a Mesa Lonestar lately. Thanks!

I'm the OP and frankly hadn't been back to this thread in quite a while. I'm truely enjoying the pictures you've posted, Gibsons et al.

I admit I still have a weakness for my ES-335 Dot Fat Neck Sunburst even after a year of ownership. She is the shining star of any blues jam I've played in and of course rocks the house when doing blues rock.

I must say that I don't think I've seen any guitar pictures that elicit more emotional response than a sunburst 335 with a nice tweed amp!

The guitar that most complements a Telecaster, Why do you say that? I'm not doubting you, I just don't see the connection myself.

Actually, when I acquired my 335, a friend of mine wanted to trade me for an 80s MIJ Telecaster Custom (the one in my avatar). My friend didn't like his 335 at all for some reason and never played it. I was playing bass in his band and lent him my Tele and he fell in love with it. Really lobbied hard for me to trade him, which would have been an insanely good deal for me, since I had only paid about $400-$450 for the Tele and I almost never played it at that point.

However, I had a strong emotional attachment to it as it was the first really nice electric guitar I ever owned, and I had gigged with it heavily for a couple of years. I wound up buying the 335 for the amount that he had originally paid for it (which was about $850... I don't know how many years earlier this was).

This is new to me from Japan. Its one of the Japan market Epiphone by Gibson ES 335s that was made in the Terada factory, and basically is the same guitar as the Orville by Gibson. My USA G&L ASAT Special Semi-Hollow used to be my best sounding guitar - this is amazing. Its not as tough as the G&L for rhythm use, but the tone is really sweet and full.

I'm not asking you or anyone else to be a judge of anything. This is a thread to enjoy ES-335's for anyone that wants to post, that's all. My 335 Fat Neck sunburst looks just like the others, and their pictures are better than I can take for sure. Trying to dig into why I haven't posted is a bit creepy to me.

BTW, I had a Larry Carlton on order at that time. Every few weeks I would check up on the order that the store would say, "Should be coming any time."
After a couple of months of that, I grew weary and one day a beautiful ES-335 Dot Fat Neck sunburst came into my life. I cancelled the LC order. My Fat Neck remains in my life and is my #1 guitar. Blues jams, blues-rock, Merle Travis picking...it excels at these.

Campfire, I don't know what the average weight of 335s is, but I suspect it's well over 8 pounds. They aren't light guitars, compared to Strats and Teles. They are pretty substantial, with a lot of wood despite the hollow parts of the body. I think mine is about 8 1/2, I weighed it when I first got it, but I forget stuff! I'll weigh it again and report back.

Mine weighs in @ a little over 8 1/2 lbs., so we are in the same ballpark. The reason I asked about the weight is, When I picked up a 63 Custom Shop RI @ Sam Ash recently, it almost floated out of my hands it was so light! Even the regular production 335's were lighter than mine. That being said, I love the neck, sustain, the aged look, and just great sound of my 335 better. Hi,
Here' s my 335 with the most lovely neck. It's an Epi Japan (same as Ovrille by Gibson) 335 63 FC. Pretty rare, only seen 2 of these in faded cherry in 7 years of looking. This 63 was a limited run with the block inlays, correct style tuner heads and correct FC colour to the Gibson Historics 335 63 FC. To be honest, to spot the difference between the two (epi and gib) is pretty hard except the pickups and electronics. The epi has an aluminium stop tail and the fit and finish is very high - i sold 2 gibson dot 335's as they weren't of the same high build of the epi and the epi's pickups compared favourably to the classic 57s. Still might have to let her go soon:sad:

I guess I should join in too. This was willed to me by my father. However he has not passed away, only has no interest in playing anymore. So, he told me I might as well be enjoying it, rather than having it sit in a closet. It's an early 80's Gibson dot RI. He didn't know it, but the previous owner installed a push pot to split the bridge.

I'm surprised no one had mentioned Heritage prior to this in the thread. You can get a guitar as good or better than a Gibson, for about half the price. The resale is not as high, but who buys a guitar for that, anyway? Here's my 535, which is identical to an ES-335 - as they used to be made. You can still call the factory and talk with the guy who made your guitar. I couldn't give Heritage a more heartfelt endorsement, they are fabulous guitars, and an amazing bang for the buck.

Btw, this is the only electric guitar I own that hasn't been modified in some way (pickups, parts, etc.). It's got the Heritage HRW pickups, which I found I preferred to all the other options I got to play when I bought the guitar.

ES 335 will be my last buy. 3 teles is ok. This is my last dream. Or maybe 339. I dont like the jack spot of 335. Is sound same as they say in ads or is it quite different? (I never tried 339)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this thread went to post #145 (http://www.tdpri.com/forum/guitar-owners-clubs/178572-es-335-club-4.html#post2973029) before anyone showed what I consider to be the archetypal 335: cherry red, gloss, dot neck, and tune-o-matic! And it's still the only one in the thread!

Not to downplay all the other drool-worthy instruments in here (I'm not even sure I'd get cherry if I bought a 335) but I found that humorous. Kinda like having a 5 page long show-us-your-telecaster thread and taking 4 pages for someone to show off a 3-saddle butterscotch tele!

This is my '01 Gibson ES-333. One of my best ever craigslist scores, and I have recently switched out the HOT Gibson humbuckers (13k+!!) for some handwound PAF style jobbies from Smit's Pickups. Although she and my blue tele are locked in an eternal battle over #1 status, she's definitely the one I'd rescue if the house was on fire.

What I hear from many 339 owners it's more like a Les Paul than a 335 is.

Some complain about a more restricted upper fret access.

The jack being where it is on a 335 is not really a problem especially when a right angle connector is used.

I got an EPI ES-335 flame top in trade last month,a real purty guitar with gold hard ware, and vintage sunburst.Do any of you gig one regular, and what are your thoughts on the pick ups they ship with?Mine sound kind of hot and dirty, thru my Peavey c30.But I am used to single coils.this is a really nicely made Korean guitar, for 300.00 or so used.Sitting on the stand,it looks like a 1500.00 ax.

I didn't even know there was a 335 club, I had only seen the hollowbody (semi) club before today. Perfect timing tho because I just got mine today!
After a very long trade search I finally got my dream guitar.

2001 Gibson ES 335, vintage tobacco burst with nice 60's neck.
Gorgeous vintage double flame top. Best one I have played yet, and that includes a few Heritage 535's. Best part for me is the Peter Florance Voodoo 59's (A5 bridge A3 neck) pickups, with original aged covers. Pots upgraded vintage kit, 500k CTS pots and .022 Hovland Paper in Oil Musiccaps. Grover tuners are solid and work so good, and strap locks. Original case with pink interior (my daughters love that). Guitar is so rich and nails that vintage PAF sound. I am on cloud 9 right now, and plan to stay there a while.

I'd like to join this group. I have an 08 in cherry. I finally got an iPhone so I need to figure out how to post pics. Of course, you guys do a marvelous job so don't get your hopes up. As far as amps go. I play through a Bassman RI. I agree with Campfire, I have found that the classic '57s are very well matched to this guitar. I have a set of Burst Buckers in my 'O2 '58 Les Paul RI and I don't like them nearly as well as the classic '57s. Currently I'm saving for a tweed deluxe and an ES-355. I'm a slender guy and a 335 is a lot of real estate. It dwarfs me but from my understanding a 355 is about 1/4" smaller in diameter than the 335. As is the Epiphone. BTW: My brother has a the epiphone version in colonburst and it is very comparable to mine. In fact, I was wondering why I even bothered with the Gibson after close examination of his.

Thanks!

Unfortunately I sold that one after buying my last Historic 335.

It was between that & the R8.
I wanted to keep it but was afriad I'd want another R8 if I sold that one.
In retrospect I made a mistake and the translucent brown '99 USA 335 was likely the most favorite guitar, let alone 335, I ever had in 48 years of playing.

I sold it for $1800. BTW, shipping and PayPal included.

Only $1800? You could've gotten a little more.

And I know what you mean, we ALL end up getting rid of one guitar that never should've left our hands. Personally, I regret getting rid of my Schecter Hellraiser C-1FR. But maybe, one might show up at my door again.

Yep, the guy I sold it to decided 335s were not his style and sold it on Ebay for $2k.
Too bad as I had another guy that really wanted it but couldn't sell his amp fast enough to buy it.
Sadly his amp sold two days too late.

I was looking for a quicker sale to pay the CC balance off on the Historic.

I had it for about 8 years and would buy it back or trade the '98 R8 for it if I had the chance.

BLAM
May 30th, 2011, 05:21 AM
Ball park similar but with enough differences to notice and keep me amused.

The red one has BurstBucker Pro 1 & 2s which I always think are more crunchy/gainy/rock orientated while the suburst one has more of a smooth/woody sound to it that just sustains all day. Had to sell lots of stuff to afford these two so I'm a bit stuck on outside comparisons now but from memory my old eighties 347 didn't sustain as much.

Other than that, the neck on the s/b 59 is a bit beefier but not a base ball bat while the 60s/red one is more akin to a roundish SG neck.

I bought mine back in 1990 but never really bonded with it. It played great and felt really nice but sounded dull and muddy. A couple of years ago I swapped out the volume pots for 500K ohm ones. The original 300k Gibson pots metered out at 230k. Now it's sound great. I love playing it through my DR. They are a match made in heaven.

I just paid for her sister (whoops...). It's due from Japan shortly, bought from the mighty Ishibashi:razz: Problem is, I had to sell my only Tele to fund her:sad: Well, well. I will save up for a new Tele, and I know what kind I want. A TL62B-TX, Made in Japan of course!

I recently aquired two nice guitars, so I would be honored to join the ES club.
Here's my new old ES-335. It is a late 60's or early 70's. The orange decal and nylon saddles pin it late 60's but the serial number is 1972.
A real beauty. It is light and resonant. Trying to keep it 100% stock but I might get a Callahan bridge with steel saddles and possible refret/nut? But I hope to proceed judiciously. I would like to get it to rip like my new Suhr tele. That boy has medium jumbo, stainless steel frets on a perfect Brazilian Rosewood fretboard which has a 9 to 12" compound radius.

Here's my entry to the club.

The Epi Dot is really nice. I think you have to look around to find the right one though.

Only complaint about it is the stock pups only sound good on "10" and even then its not great.

Thinking a pup swap may be in order. Perhaps P-94s? That would leave me with the Tele, the LP and a P-90 axe. Sonic ground covered!

Solly, I remember when you first posted that thing, thinking how cool it was. Interested to know what you think of it now you've had it a while. I'm imagining it to be appallingly heavy?

I don't own a 335, but it's the one Gibson I would choose if asked. Lp, sg, are all great, don't get me wrong. Interesting how tastes go... Does being a tele owner mean you tend to like 335s?

Seems like that to me.

I have LPs, Strat, Teles, and 335s.
I've also had many of these throughout my life and including quite a few SGs.

The two that stand out and are the most pleasing to play due to what I get out of them are the Tele & the 335.

I still love it, the burstbucker 1&2's sound great. It is an anchor though, over 9lbs but i play mostly while sitting so the weight really isnt an issue for me.

It's an '08 model as far as I know and it sounds very nice indeed! Looks nice too, although my photography skills possibly don't do it the justice it deserves.

Great club, the ES-335 Owners Club.

A fine collection of photos from various owners showing what is without doubt one of the Gibson family's most iconic models. Eye candy at its best.

Please allow me to add a couple of photos of my own ....

That red 66 335 is my favorite devnulljp. Here is my 1981 Dot Neck Reissue, one of the first reissues out of Nashville with Tim Shaw pickups, TP6 is added and 500K pots added. It has Birdseye Maple and came with aged parts and Grovers. These sound great once you change out the 300K pots.

Superb! I was also looking for a 335 forum and seems like this is the only one!
I got mine only a few weeks ago and it's the greatest thing i've ever owned. No guitar i've played has came close to this and i think that may explain the lack of forums - why would you need to lust over another guitar when you have a 335 ;-)

Would love to hear what you guys use for your boost, drive and fuzz pedals with yours. I had build my board around my tele - so 2 keeley ts9s and a big muff where perfect to give maximum depth and body to her. With the 335 though they just don't feel right - the muff is now simply brutal at any setting and the massive amounts of mid from the tube screamers just take away from the perfect tone that it seems like blasphemy!
Want a drive and boost that will go mild to wild but retain that luscious 335 and black face tone at all times.

Man I love my beautiful baby girls SO MUCH!!!! :-)

If you want more of your tone...it's hard to beat the Tim or Timmy from Paul Cochrane. I currently have a Xotic Effects ep-Booster and also use a Fulltone OCDv4. I'm going to score a few more OD's though and the Cochrane stuff is on the top of the list. Also look at the Analogman King of Tone, Skinner Light OD, Klon KTR, etc....a lot of choices out there for great OD's for sure. But if you are mainly after MORE of YOUR tone...look into PaulC's pedals...the Tim/Timmy pedals are extremely hard to beat.

Congratulations and welcome to the Telecaster forum. I've got a 2004 335 and love it, but the music we're playing with the current band needs the Tele. (Although the new album has a couple of 335 parts on it.)

I had a Travis Bean Artist but after playing the 335 through a cranked 1965 Deluxe I decided I didn't need another guitar with humbuckers. I was surprised how much it rocked.

I got the Gibson for its tone. The only pedals I feel I need are my MXR compressor and a delay.

Welcome Chairman Meaow!

I like the Bad Bob for a boost with every guitar I have including my 335s.

Haha yeah I do 100 thumb press ups a day dude ;-)

Transparency seems to be the key. I play in a psychedelic rock band and already the difference in the last few rehearsals with the 335 has been superb. The only way I can describe it is that the tele seemed to be a conduit between my fingers and my effects, the 335 now means the guitar is where it's at and the effects are only needed sparingly to enhance. Just that tone of the 335 cranked up is enough to make me go insane with pleasure but when the 335 starts vibrating against your body when everything is in full flow is purely sexual! :-)

I did manage to find the fuzz for me and ditched the muff for a fulltone 69. Tried about 15 fuzzes in my local shop with the Gibson and this one just suited it perfectly. Was able to get a pretty exact fuzz face sound but with a lot more ability to tweak to suit the guitar and amp. At home and in rehearsal it has worked an absolute treat - what I love is it was not as brutal as others which actually allows it to be pushed further and work with the guitar rather than against it - which has lead me from fizz hell to fuzz heaven

The tim and bad bob are definitely on my list to try. I was thinking a zvex super hard on and a throbak overdrive boost (colorsound clone) would be great but like the tim and Bob it's impossible to try before buying. Anyone got experience of either?

Obviously all the shops have xotics which I can try it, am definitely intrigued to see what each could bring. Think I might go try them all to see if any tickle my fancy as a starting point.

More thoughts and suggestions gladly received guys! It always helps I suppose to know the kind of thing people play when recommending pedals so my bag is bands like the Brian Jonestown massacre, the black angels, the warlocks, ride, floyd, tame impala etc

Thanks for the great advice so far. Yeah baby - the 335 forum rocks! :-)

Hellos all,
I am a new-be today. So, I also happen to be shopping for my
very first Gibson ES. From what I have read, one of the most sought after
Archtops is the ES 175. I am curious why none exist in the photo posts line up. I see mostly guitars from the "thinline" series'

for opinions or comments about my limited knowledge of the archtop series',
am I correct in this thinking?

regards, Mike

I am sorry I can not post a pic but I don't have the darn ax yet.
