I've just done my first pedal mod on my well used 1985 boss od-1 pedal. I've always kind of liked this pedal, even if it was a bit mushy at times, but it was always smooth and kept the character of the guitar.
Anyway to make a short story long, I took out the original JRC4558DD chip. and replaced it with a Burr Brown OPA2134 chip.
Yikes, this thing has now got some attitude. It's clearer, less mushy/middy and the attack is edgier..and as for noise..well there just isn't any.
Really surprised at the difference a chip could make.
Now I just need some ideas for my boss od-2...that thing is just underwhelming, the overdrive is blah, the turbo boost lacks any mojo, and the output level is lame. How could they have gone so wrong after the od-1??
