I have salvaged an old cct board from work and it has a whole bunch of transistors on it. Mainly F2N4400, 2N4402 and 2N4124's . is there any simple guitar effects (I am thinking OD or boost) that can be built with these type? Does the numbers before the 2 mean anything or after the number? As in xx2N4400xxx. I have searched all over the internet and now defer to the experts.

Yes the number 2 has a meaning. It's the number of P-N junctions in the device.
Which is why diodes have 1Nxxx numbers and transistors have 2Nxxx.

David the full tag on the transistors I found are F2N4400 BBC. I understand that this is a 2N4400 transistor I was wondering what the F at the beginning and the BBC at the end meant. In your opinion are these parts at all usable in a simple cct or should I abandon the idea?

I know this sounds like a stupid question, but is it BBC or EBC? Some manufacturers actually put the pinout on the package. The EBC would stand for Emitter-Base-Collector
Also, the F stands for Fairchild Seminconductor.

Thanks Dawg.
Just an update. I have built an LPB1 Clone using a 2N4124 and a Bazz Fuzz using a 2N3904. One drawback though...now I am hooked. A workmate told me he has another huge box of old industrial cards. Hmm what's next?
