Great idea Overseer - Count me in!

Ok here's my 'about me' bit: -
Two Partscaster 'tele's here (another donor is on the way), one cream and one natural blackguard.
Also have a Squire strat that is headed for the door to make way.

My interest is mainly in hunting down bargain Tele / T-Types (decent copies mainly) and to mod them into something 'better' i.e. playable, sound-wise, enjoyable and better looking, with a bit of vintage vibe.

I have also recently developed an unhealthy inrerest in the Squier '51 model, and I'm keeping my eyes peeled , particularly for a blonde one at a decent price.

Thats me - who's next .. ;)

Overseer
August 26th, 2009, 11:56 AM
cheers.. i nearly called this the British Broad(Tele)caster Club ;) but thought better of it!

a friend of mine has a squier 51.. its not blonde though.. its partly what got me fiending a tele.. a different friend has an affinity tele which i dont like the narrow neck on, but the squier 51 was what swung me back to the tele camp!

i'm a newb guitarist so resisting the GAS to buy more right now.. down the line i hope to have another Tele modded to the nines.. maybe lightened for transportation as a 'beater' type thing (i have a 3/4 size acoustic for that right now)... and one idea is to mount something like a px4d directly in the body so its all self contained.. who knows!

In the UK no.. I live in a large rural town we have one slick guitar store and another guy that trades second hand stuff.. I drive past that one and his window changes regularly with new stock. noticed a new bunch of teles and strats today.

My new one can be got for around £250 online.. In the states they go for $350 online or £215.. A diff of 35 quid or $56

ps no connection with seller.

pps I got two teles now - bought four since last Feb and sold two - each has a story!

First had a MIM blackout SSS Fender - black on black. Sold that 'cos the neck was two thin for me... then got a MIK lite ash which I later swapped for a MIM '72 custom RI.

Then yesterday, I scored a black/white pg standard MIK '89 Squire. It needs TLC but feels fab. Electrics are pretty crap and the frets have some wear, but WTH it was cheap and has an awsome neck.

Count me in too if Squire Affinity's count? Mod's are Les Paul neck humbucker in neck position(still got the bridge pup of the pair) with AXL/AMG bridge pup, wired as per Craig Anderton 5 position and tone volume link wire moved to ctr lug on volume pot and shielded cavities, using a 0.05mf cap.vintage type bridge and through stringing with reversed control plate.
I can get loads of tones but love the neck/bridge series which gives,in my opinion a nice classic blues sound.
Hope the pics come through!!!

Squier Standard, Squier Affinity, a couple of homebuilds, a partscaster that lives at my workplace and a Peavey Generation.

When I get round to it, I'm going to swap the neck pickup for something better than the stock one. The bridge sounds OK to me. Since I gave it a good fret level it plays like butter:

That's a really nice Tele!

On another tack, any UK guys or gals know where I could buy just the bridge pickup from a '51 nocaster set? I want to use one in an Esquire project but I'd rather not shell out for the full set and then sell or hold onto the neck pup if I don't have to. I've got my eye on Bay and I've emailed the usual outlets but no-one in the UK (or thomann) appears to sell just the bridge pup.

Just a bit more feedback funff. Had a good couple of hours today jamming at home with a mate. When he finally gave the bloody Tele back to me !!!! , I turned up my Hot Rod Deluxe and gave it some welly.

Let me tell you - this pickup sounds suuuperb. It made the drive channel of my HRD sound good! Quite a feat with a HRD!

My stage driven tones come from a Marshall GV2 for most of my pub-rock/punk stuff and a Boss Bluesdriver for 'Keef' type crunch or rockabilly rawk. Hooked the rig up and my whole sound came alive.

2 things of note - 1. the string seperation is fantastic, even on heavily driven tones & 2. reduce the volume and it cleans up beautifully.

This is one hell of a pickup for £27.

Well. Had a gig last night on Mersea Island near sunny Colchester, and I decided I'd give the Tonerider loaded MIM the first half - upto the 'beer & fag' entry on the set list. Bit of a risk as I'd not even used it for a band practice, but I figured I would be able to get a good idea if it was gonna do the biz during the sound check.

I blew me away!! The tonerider is a serious pickup. I've upgraded guitars with Fender OVs, Wilcos, Seymours, Dimarzios - the lot, in the past. The tonal quality of these Toneriders is superb. If you've not considered a Tonerider in the past coz it just 'sounds too cheap' then I urge you to think again.

I was still playing the MIM at the end of the encore (it was a good night), even put a little 'ding' in it - must've been good!

degsycaster, thank you for your reveiw! I've got a 72 Custom that I wanted to leave original, but I've known for a while that the bridge P/U needs just a bit more output to match the neck humbucker, looks like the Tonerider may be the way to go.

Stratsrgood. To put it into context - the Tonerider is a lot clearer and more complex, tonally than the high output units that are standard fit on the MIM standard, but not quite as 'ballsy' and bass heavy as the Custom Shop Broadcaster in my Baja. There's more 'twang' than the 'Broadcaster' but still an awful lot of bite. Let me know what you think if you do get one.

Hi Glebe

I'd hoped it would be something as vintage Rossi-esque as that. Excellent!

Nice Vester by the way.

Did you cut down the bridge yourself to fit in the 'bucker?

If so, I have a question, as I have to do similar to my (pink!) 'set-up-for-slide-only' Tele copy to fit a Fender Widerange RI 'bucker in the bridge.

I'm expecting to just hacksaw(?) across the existing bridge to shorten it, and route out the existing hole.
Was it as 'easy' as that for you?

Yes, this is my dream come true being a Status Quo fan since the mid 70s! It really does all those classic Rossi sounds, I play it through a VOX AC30 and can really nail that vintage Quo sound. Actually I just played along with some early 70's Quo albums and they're not half as bad as I remembered :-) That hole was drilled when he was stoned (Francis doesn't remember why), that green paint was Cuprinol, popular fence paint from early 70's! His Tele was originally sunburst! He claims that it's a late 50's Tele but if you look closely (http://www.bogusquo.com/replicas_francis_main.htm) it has a maple cap neck, so it must be from early/mid 60's.

OK, thought I'd post some pics .. ;)

Partscaster:

You can see i had some rather major intonation issues after swapping out the original bridge, and then putting on a 22 fret neck .. had to shift the whole thing North by about quarter of a mile ..
Its Ok now though .. just ;)

GFS Fatbody Alnico pickups - electrics not finished yet, but i play it unplugged .. a lot ..

Pinky!
This one has raised action and nut, and is set up for slide.
The neck pup is disconnected now, and I have an 'esquier' style guard to go on it.
And a Fender WRH RI to go in the bridge.

http://images44.fotki.com/v1581/fileAmTW/9b000/8/1567738/7966785/pinky1.jpg

and this is latest .. needs no introduction really but it is a Squier CV 50's Tele.
(and is supposed to be 'white-ish' blonde, but this one is more ivory blonde.

If you go for a bridge bucker on the pink [soon to be esquire] I'd make sure you get a coil-tap....really versatile.

Here's my pseudo-Esquire....best guitar I have:

Under-pickguard neck pup, wired '53 style.....coil-tap on the bridge pup engages additional wire, so a 'beefy boost' if/when needed.

Lovely job on the broadcaster Peter.

Did you source the case within the UK?
Who's the manuacturer, and is the case decent?

I bought the case via an auction on eBay UK. It's a Nocaster Custom Shop case (made by G&G?).

It's great for show but offers quite poor protection and it's terribly balanced. I don't use it for gigging but for keeping a guitar in under the bed! And for photoshoots.

Having said that, I love it.

They pop up every so often on eBay and they feature regularly on eBay USA. Or Glendale stocks them (although they are the non-tweed variety) and Dale will ship to the UK (for a small fortune).

Hope this helps.

The finish was done by the internationally famous Clive Brown who'se based in Ripon, North Yorkshire.

2006 White MIM 50s ReIssue. Stock apart from new bone nut, leather guard and a four way switch. Oh and an ashtray cover sets it off nicely too.

2004 Wine Red MIM Standard. Converted to an Esquire. Stacked pickup, wired to three way. Pearl guard, but might change it to a three ply black.

All three sound very different and get played a lot.

Wow - just goes to show what a classic design the Telecaster is, that it is so universally respected and admired all around the world, half a century after it was conceived!
Only got the one Tele, but it's a Squier CV, a magical assembly of pine and steel, beautifully put together by those gifted craftsmen and craftsladies in China. I love it, so count me in.
I haven't done any gigs for a long time now, but spend a lot of time in Garage Band, and the Tele sounds great plugged straight into the iMac from my Pocket Pod.
All I need now is some talent - can't buy that on eBay infortunately...

Here's mine, in Edinburgh.

JD Tele (Japanese), with a P/W bender, a Hipshot d-tuner and a Harmonic Design "P-90" bridge p/up.
Metal front was done by a guy in Sheffield, England, for a faux Zemaitis look. Forgotten who did the rear's cover...oh yeah, Simms, in England.

Neck was replaced last year - old one's frets totally worn out - which really brought the guitar back to life, tonally.

At present my Telecasters comprise an American Vintage '62 Custom Reissue in 3TS, an ESP 400-series from the early/mid 80s, currently wearing Tonerider Hot Classics, and a bog-standard Squier CV50s acquired recently and with which I'm quite well impressed. All three are working guitars and earn their keep.

Hi there from Leyland in Lancashire.
On my 6th tele, having been thru a Japanese in the 80's, a couple of AV52RI's, American Std and a partsocaster.
I'm now on my 3rd 52ri. All the others have been sold, traded or moved on to make way for other purchases.
The current one is a keeper (best tele I've ever played - light as a feather and resonates for days) and has led to me selling a couple of other guitars (including my partsocaster - based on a 62 custom) as they aren't being played.

Always had a soft spot for the telecaster since going to my first gig in 1984 - the mighty Status Quo.

Veeeery nice Peter - I'd love to hear what a Charlie Christians and a Bigsby sound like together .. pretty good I'd wager.

The Keystones (I presume?) pickups on the Pinecaster - did the neck pup come with a cover - or did you put one on?

I'm actually looking for a plastic tele neck pup cover, or at least one that is as 'electro-magnetically' as transparent as possible.

Any suggestions?

(I'm fairly sure I threw out a plastic neck pup cover in 'disgust' quite some time back - 'I'll never be wanting that' thing .. etc etc )

Veeeery nice Peter - I'd love to hear what a Charlie Christians and a Bigsby sound like together .. pretty good I'd wager.

This mod has turned out really nice. Can't wait to crank this up at gig volumes! Both pick ups are really responsive to the volume and tones knobs and I suspect that I can really dirty up the tone with a tweak of the volume and/or tone knobs. Good for rock and I suspect GREAT for the Blues!

The Keystones (I presume?) pickups on the Pinecaster - did the neck pup come with a cover - or did you put one on?

Yes, Keystones but I'm really unhappy with them. They were given to me as a present and I took out the Hot Toneriders that were in there originally. I sold the Toneriders and now I wish I hadn't as I simply don't like the Keystones. The Toneriders were full and fat, the Keystones are clean and almost sterile sounding. They won't be in there for long.

To be fair, I need to try these at gig volumes. My Strat Keystones really surprised me when I cranked them up!

FYI, the neck was supplied with the neck cover on.

The Keystones are good value, great pick ups but they are not for me. I was too quick to sell the Toneriders - which incidentally I sold for more than I paid for them!

Interestingly, Dangleberry for less than what I sold mine for!

I got mine from Axesrus, or so I thought - but they seemed to have dropped them - the hot classics went into a MJT body i had - and (IMHO) were brilliant - bell like and rocky with the wick turned up

In addition to the above, I recently bought a Japanese home-market '52 Blackguard from John Blackman of Far East Guitars (www.fareastguitars.co.uk). It's equipped with Fender USA OV pickups and is absolutely su-bloody-perb. In particular the slightly thicker neck with beautifully rolled edges is very accommodating to a nasty tendon problem I have in the first finger of my left hand.

Tis indeed a Squier Classic Vibe Tele, in this new 'colour' Butterscotch Blonde. Playable straight from the box, and apart from changing the strings to 10s when I've worn out these Fender 9s:cry:, I'll be leaving it as is.

Thanks guys. It's a really great sounding guitar.

When I bought it I thought the sounds would be in the LP Special end of the market with single coils and that bridge on mahogany but its much more rounded and blended tone wise. It does some really nice cleans but push it/OD it and things get fat and hairy in short order.

Fender have missed a trick not re-issuing these IMHO.

Love the things - I have two Hot Rod Valve Specials (the one pictured I bought new and is my main practise amp and I have another in a different location which I bought used).

I run them both with extension cabs (1x12 and a 2x10) and they sound fantastic. They take pedals extremely well and the amps are dead quiet for recording purposes.

I hear what you're saying about the contrast. In certain lights i love it - in others, I'm still deciding. I gig quite regularly, so it will darken up and naturally gloss quite quickly. Its still got the sanding sealer coat on it so that will protect the grain to a certain extent. I'll see how we go with it for a while and make changes later if I need to I think:?:

No, it looks like one of the recent (Chinese) Modern Player models - the Plus, I think. I'm considering getting its sister model, the Thinline with the two P90s. Seem to be decent quality, at least on a par with the Squier CV series, at a very reasonable price.

£338 is very reasonable indeed by current standards, but I've realised that I remember when you could buy two Strats or three Teles for that. American ones - the only kind there were. God, it makes me feel so old! Mind you, in those days that was at least several months' salary rather than less than a week's. And those guitars, if they still exist, are each now worth a fortune - at least several months' salary. Hmm...

You're talking my language, Tony. I remember when, weird though it seems, Fenders were made in America - you had the choice of (basically) a Stratocaster or a Telecaster. Yes, that was the precise choice. About 1976 I think. A Strat was, if I remember rightly, about £235. And going back to your point about today's equivalence in spending power, that £235 was about 6 months wages to me!

My Woolworths "Audition" electric had to last me a while. Anyone remember them?

Oh and Les Pauls were a ridiculous price and no fricking good. Plus ca change....?

Oh, yes indeed. And Woolies' own Embassy record label - covers of the "real" thing... and lots more besides, but there's real danger of a nostalgia-fest here! Besides, we did that thread a while ago...

Mind you, I remember paying £185 for my first Strat (including case) from Macari's in 1971 or 1972. It was notionally secondhand, with the label of Hummel's of Frankfurt on the back of the headstock, but it was in brand new condition, last of the CBS four-bolt models with a maple neck. They allowed me just £58 (that's right, fifty eight pounds) against the price for my 1958 Gretsch 6119 Chet Atkins Tennessean. Not long ago I saw the identical model - could even have been that very instrument for all I know - advertised at £3,795. Inflation, eh? And fashion... Shame my crystal ball was in for servicing that day.

By the way, that Strat turned out to be a right dog, but that's another story.

Chriss945

I am also included in this I suppose.

MIJ Esquire Butterscotch blackplate from 1985, Dad has owned since new.
And recently a 1981 Tokai Telecaster in all black, which is currently FORSALE on the bay if anyones interested. :)

And of course my number one guitar as I have yet to find a guitar that plays better is my Strat. Which was made from several bits of wood. a MIJ 1985 BEATEN to hell body, (which weirdly was just lying around) an allparts neck, some overly expensive tuners (big waste of money) and some completely unknown, un-named, completely no idea what they are, cost us £15 set of pickups. I have replaced the pickups many times and just cant find anything that sounds better... my next set are probably going to be some fender custom shop 50s, or some BKs :)

Pictures maybe to follow if i can find any

Don't remember that one myself, but I play the H Bar C at Arborfield every so often - in your neighbourhood. I too would welcome a change of band, in Berkshire or anywhere else in the south-east, but it ain't easy these days - truth to tell I'm not that happy with my current situation but it's hard to argue with plenty of work, whether I enjoy it or not.

For that sort of money you can get one of the American Vintage models - the 52 or 62. I have one of the latter and it really is a nice guitar. The pickups are not high output but they sound excellent and are commonly acknowledged as among Fender's best. Note that the AV62RI comes with "vintage" wiring for the switch but the components are supplied to do the easy mod to standard neck/both/bridge pickup switching. A vintage case is included with various other bits of "case candy" such as the ashtray bridge cover and a fairly naff lead and strap.

The AV 52 reissue gets a lot of praise in this forum but I haven't experienced it myself, though I'm extremely happy with my Japanese version.

Your budget might also stretch to one of the lower-end Custom Shop models. I suggest doing a bit of research among the UK dealers to find what's available and may suit you.
