Well...one of the things that I like to do is make up little compositions...little studies in things...
So the other day in front of the TV I came up with this little thing for doing volume swells and using traditional voice leading...but with a few subtle harmonic twists.
Originally I called it something like "greener pastures"...I should say I feel a little embarrassed  posting here as I am not personally religious and live in a very secular society...but everyone should appreciate good voice leading!
After living with it a while I made up some more suitable lyrics that seemed to work...
All the things that I once saw
In your eyes I see once more
Once again in the arms of the Lord
I feel safe again
I thought you'd gone
But I was wrong
You were always there

I know this is a little small to read...still working on ways to post scores...I have a guitar pro file here for those who can upload...I believe it will work in guitar edit (free) as well...http://www.4shared.com/file/127820228/ede66273/You_were_always_there_-_hymn.html..it will play back as a midi file as well as give the full sized TAB and notation.
If nothing else, it is quite a nice little tune to play and get a "church organ" kind of sound out of a telecaster. A good little study for anyone learning trad music theory or composition with a few interesting subtle twists (especially the chromatic parts under "I thought you'd gone, but I was wrong" and the use of added 9ths and 11ths often utilizing the open b string to give it a subtle 'flavour').
The important thing in composing a melody like this is that it is easy enough for people to sing but still expresses the sentiment.
The other thing with these kinds of tunes, they tend to sound so familiar or "right" that it's very hard to know whether one has inadvertently stolen it...perhaps people more familiar with the genre might give me a heads up...otherwise enjoy
