Airline Amp Score

I found an obscure music store while driving through a small town in Texas not long ago. I was shocked when I went in the store. There was so much vintage gear! There was an entire room with old amps stacked to the ceiling. And I'm not talking about just along the walls. The entire room was filled. You couldn't even get in the door. The guy told me he had no idea what all he had. Come to find out, he does a lot of Ebay and online sales, so he wasn't any dummy.

I found this 1964 Airline 62-9023 sitting up against the wall and when I asked him how much, he said he'd take $300 firm. I'd been looking for a good Valco made amp and thought that was a pretty good buy, so I took it. I had to replace the 6972 power tubes and the rectifier tube but other than that it's good to go. Love the tone this amp puts out. It kind of has a Marshall vibe when cranked. And probably one of the best tremelo that I've heard. From what I've learned, it's supposed to be the same circuit as the Supro 1624T. I think it's about 15 watts or so, loaded with the original Jensen C12R

Thought I'd share.

IIRC, that is 7-8 watts. Nice, nice, nice. I have a early 60s 62-9029A [Supro 16T] with a 1962 CR8 Jensen, all original tubes. I had to put that speaker in, the original CTS got the magnet knocked off in shipping. Thankfully the seller [a TDPRI Member] pulled the tubes and bubble wrapped them in a small box, so the loose speaker magnet did not trash them all. I totally dig the sound of mine especially with an alnico extension speaker.

Here is a link you may want if you do not have it already. A lot of the Supro/Airline seem to be only documented [schematics] from the made for Gretsch units as far as availability goes.

this one is like a Vibrochamp with reverb thru a 10 inch speaker. Sounds great. Here is mine in this thread.

I don't think that schematic is right for the OP's amp. It links to a Gretsch 6156 with dual 6V6-GTs. That must an older late '50s version of the amp.

I have a 1965 Gretsch 6156 Playboy (killer amp!) with dual 6973 tubes and 12" Jensen, and the OP's amp is mid-'60s vintage also, plus he mentioned 6972 (sic) tubes. Roy Blankenship serviced my amp and measured it at 18 watts, so this should be about the same.

I typo'd...I meant 6973. Not 6972

I figured as much.

Enjoy the amp, you got a good buy. Paid $500 for my Gretsch. Love those two-tone Airline cabinets also.

Welcome to Jimmy Page land !

It's the 6973's.

Don't let anyone tell you it was a Thunderbolt (6L6's) he used.

Let your ears be the judge.

You're absolutely right - it's like a mini-Marshall.

There's nothing tweedy or 50's-sounding about them.

Great score - don't cheap out on the tubes.

When mine go it's gonna get NOS expensive ones not the EH ones or newer varieties.

I have the same amp in a National box.
