I have an Ibanez short scale ARTB100. I just put new strings on and I'm getting fret rattle. What did I do wrong?

I've always noticed that when I put new strings on my electrics they rattle slightly for a day or two. After a while it goes away. I've never really thought about it until now, but I guess the strings have to stretch out a little, which makes sense because I also have to retune my guitars a couple times before they'll stay in tune for long periods.

If the new strings are a different gauge that could cause rattles. I'd just play it a couple of days and see if the rattle persists. Every now and then I have to give the truss rod a bump if the rattle won't go away (tends to happen in winter) - a tech could do it if you don't want to. I doubt they'd charge you anything.

I just realized you're talking about a bass!

I think the same principle would apply - I have a Squier Jazz Bass that took me quite a while to get just right.

Anyway, hopefully my bass ignorance won't mislead you...

I found I got fret rattle from lower tension strings, and the only fix (other than changing to a different brand) was to raise my action a little, and perhaps adjust my truss rod to provide a touch more relief...

Have you put the same gauge of string on? How did you restring, one at a time or did you whip the lot off at once?
If its been a while since your bass was restrung, its probably gone into shock!
Let it settle for a day or so and if you still have the rattle problem, do what Tim suggested and tweak the bridge and truss rod a little. if your not happy doing this, take it to your local repair guy or music shop, they will do a setup for you and have your bass singing like new.

Is that plugged in or not? If it only rattles unplugged I don't ever worry about that. Otherwise: what they said.
