Larry K. Williams August 20th, 2009, 10:18 AM Here is my London head and matching 212 cab.....not a good pic, I need to take a better one. http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e153/larrykwilliams/Picture137.jpg It really sounds wonderful.....I run it in tandem with my Sr. Z MAZ Jr. NR. octatonic August 21st, 2009, 06:06 AM Nice one, Larry. I am thinking about a London head myself. Steve G August 21st, 2009, 07:21 AM I dont have one of these, but would like one! Charlie Sexton uses one, love his playing. Larry K. Williams August 21st, 2009, 10:24 AM I have only had it a week now. But it is quickly turning into my favorite. The sounds are great....and it is not possible to make it sound bad. I was worried about buying an amp that only had a knob that said "Tone". But that is just exactly what the knob does.......just changes for one good tone to another good tone....it is actually becoming much easier to use than the 2 or 3 band EQ on my other amps. octatonic August 23rd, 2009, 06:48 AM Yeah the Soho doesn't have a bad sound either. My config is with a 2x12 Marshall closed back cab which I think is less than ideal. I need to get myself a 65 cab asap. Larry K. Williams August 23rd, 2009, 11:00 AM The combination of the Celestion Blue and the G12H30 sounds really good. I have always preferred alnico speakers but the ceramic and alnico together make a really full tone. I spent yesterday experimenting with combining both channels of the London. Again, bigger and fuller....too much at times. I guess the 65amps is a "best kept secrect"......at least for now. I am glad I found out! octatonic August 24th, 2009, 07:00 AM Have you tried the lil Elvis? I've decided to get rid of a couple of other amps and get one of these. It is an amazing sounding low wattage combo/head. Larry K. Williams August 24th, 2009, 12:09 PM I have not had the opportunity to try out hte Lil Elvis...though the name of it alone suggest it has to be good:lol::lol: I did sell my Vox AC30 and got the London....I was a little scared at first....wondering if I did the right thing. Of course, it WAS the right thing. There's no looking back. After cranking the amp the Vox is a distant memory. I really want to try out a Monterey...GAS thinking.. octatonic August 24th, 2009, 01:50 PM Here is Lil Elvis kQHpZfHajzo nvguBnjVee4 hunterwh August 25th, 2009, 08:35 PM Just ordered a Lil'Elvis today. I am so stoked. I may end up trying to sell my Marshall 1974x and 1974cx cab and Ultimate Attenuator if this is a good as I think it is. SO EXCITED!!!!! asatbender August 26th, 2009, 01:51 PM Can the Lil Elvis be used for home use with the master voltage knob? I was just curious as to how low the volume wil go and is it similat to an attenuator. octatonic August 28th, 2009, 11:06 AM Lil Elvis is designed for home and studio use. Yes the master voltage is definitely tone friendly at bedroom levels. It is an astonishing step forward. The only caveat is no reverb built into the amp. hunterwh September 5th, 2009, 12:08 AM Just got my Lil' Elvis today and it AMAZING!!! With my Tele or Les Paul it is jaw dropping good!!! Highly recommended!! My Sole-Mate reverb goes very well with it and was very inspiring tonight. Larry K. Williams September 7th, 2009, 12:53 AM Great to hear that you like it. I usually have been using my London in tandem with my Dr. Z MAZ Jr. I played a gig last night with just the London. I used a Voodoo Labs amp selector to switch between the two channels. If I had needed to be much louder I would have been in trouble, but what a sound it was!!! Also, I took the back off my 212 cab yesterday to clean out the dust. At the bottom of inside of the cab I found the signature of Peter Stroud and the marking 212-004..... 4th one made!!! frank1959 September 7th, 2009, 11:43 PM New to board. Proud owner of a 65 amps Stone Pony! Jason G September 8th, 2009, 03:51 AM I'd get one in a heartbeat, most likely a SoHo or Lil' Elvis Head! My cab would have 2x12's... A celestion G12H30 plus Alnico Blue. Oh yea, I love that speaker match. I was replacing gear with insurance money after a break in, and I chose the Super 17 Richard Goodsell builds. My ears tell me the Goodsell is a bit more clean Voxish to angry Marshall when the power gets flowing to it. The 65 Amp SoHo seemed very much more within the realm of an AC30. But that's certainly not bad, just my observation.Yea, I still want one! Cheers, Jason G Dr.TeleD October 1st, 2009, 02:33 PM Any one see Vince Gill and Emmylou Harris last night (on Leno) -- not sure which 65 VG was playing through. Lars October 7th, 2009, 03:22 AM Vince Gill played two 65 Royal Albert amps. The amp is killer.I have had mine for almost two years now and I love it. octatonic December 3rd, 2009, 03:41 PM I won an empty 65 Amps 2x10 combo case on ebay recently and thought I would investigate how easy/difficult it would be to convert my head to a combo. It turns out, very easy. The amplifier is held in with 4 bolts- which took me 20 mins to convert over. I put a pair of Jensen 10" speakers in- an alnico and a ceramic. Just tried to take some pics- but it is too dark right now. I'll put some up tomorrow. Very impressed with 65 Amps- this was a piece of cake. joek86 December 12th, 2009, 06:30 PM I got a SoHo 1/12 combo about 3 months ago and love it! The amp is the most flexible, tone dripping amp that I have owned. Throw pedals in front of it and get twang to insane brit tones. ~Joe Geoff738 December 12th, 2009, 09:14 PM I'm jealous/envious of all of you! But especially the dude with the Stone Pony. great amps! I've been saving up for the Lil' Elvis for awhile, and finally ordered it! It should hopefully be here the first week in April. I love every 65 amp I've played through and can't wait to buy a London someday, as well. They all sound great, the trem is badass, the master voltage control is badass, the look is badass, everything about them is just what I've been looking for. In case you didn't notice, I'm a little excited. joek86 April 12th, 2010, 06:40 PM Tupelo came and I have played it non stop since Feb. Anyone else play one yet? ~Joe ToneChef May 11th, 2010, 08:58 PM I play mainly at home, where I can't play loudly. However my mind is telling me "if your going to spend 2200$ on an elvis combo, why not just spend another 800$ and get a London just to be sure you'll always have enough power on tap if you ever chose to gig"... Now.. this is what my mind is telling me. I really mostly just play at home, and sometimes will play with another guitar player or rarely a drummer friend here or there. I know I would love a London Combo 2x10, that one with the 10in Celestion Gold and the Greenback, same size as the 1x12 combo... I'm really leaning towards that.. But maybe I really only NEED and Elvis since I mostly just play at home.. Also, how is the clean tone of the London/Elvis with strats? Is there a usable amount of clean headroom (actual clean) with these amps using a strat? Thanks teleamp May 12th, 2010, 10:26 PM I play mainly at home, where I can't play loudly. I never played a Strat through mine, I always used a tele. I had the combo, if I had it to do over, I would go for the head version. The LE has more headroom than the London based on what I have heard. I love the master voltage control, but IMHO you can't get low volume overdrive tones any quieter than a VJ/Champ/AC4, etc... octatonic May 22nd, 2010, 11:19 AM I play mainly at home, where I can't play loudly. Is there a usable amount of clean headroom (actual clean) with these amps using a strat? Thanks The London is great but it isn't a bedroom amp. I also don't really rate the 2x10 combo. Not enough bottom end. My Soho, which had 2x10's in the combo case (that I converted over from a head) was decidedly anemic in the bottom end. I swapped out the 2x10 baffle for a 1x12 and put in a Celestion Gold and I'm much happier for it. The Lil Elvis is pretty much loud enough to do most gigs. gitold July 4th, 2010, 08:10 AM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5BHd49D5i0&feature=player_embedded I bought a 65 Tupelo about 2 weeks ago and I'm really having fun with it.It's like a Fender version of the Lil Elvis with 6V6's.Lots of clean headroom. When you hit the smooth switch it takes on another darker colour, less headroom and louder. Then you hit the bump switch and It's a rock and roll animal.I knew from there excellent demos on there web sight that I would love this amp and I do.The tremolo is incredibly organic sounding.I have been using a Mesa Express 5x50 and I think the two amps will really compliment each other. The folks there are great to.More than willing to talk on the phone and answer your emails.I was jonesing for a Dr,Z Carmen Ghia ,then the Lil Elvis but I definitely picked the right amp here. joek86 July 4th, 2010, 08:23 AM The Tupelo has been a real find for me too! I am playing everything from the Beatles to Bad Co. through it with no problem copping the tones. I use a few boosts and ODs to flavor but the amp itself is right there. It is full but nevercongested, just 3D tone! What type of music are you playing? Have you tried any boosts or ODs yet? ~Joe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5BHd49D5i0&feature=player_embedded I bought a 65 Tupelo about 2 weeks ago and I'm really having fun with it.It's like a Fender version of the Lil Elvis with 6V6's.Lots of clean headroom. The folks there are great to.More than willing to talk on the phone and answer your emails.I was jonesing for a Dr,Z Carmen Ghia ,then the Lil Elvis but I definitely picked the right amp here. gitold July 4th, 2010, 08:52 AM I play every thing from jazz to rock, blues to country. The way I found out about 65 amps was interesting.I was looking for a Rangemaster clone for my Class5 Marshall and tried a 65 Amps colour boost. The pedals was made for that little amp,OMG it just put it over the top.It wouldn't work on my pedal board (wrong polarity) so I called the company and Dan Boul answered the phone .Told me all about the pedal how it was a 60's design and had to be used differently then modern pedals.I asked him about the warranty and he laughed and said if any thing ever goes wrong just send it back,we'll fix it.When I opened the pedal up I could not believe the build quality ...so I started to do research on their amps and bought the Tupelo. That's kind of a long way to say that their Colour boost pedal is a great match for this amp.I use compressors a lot and have quite a few of them and they sound great with this amp,a little more clean headroom in the normal stage.I have a big pedal board that I use with my Mesa but I find I don't use it with the Tupelo.I have tube screame rclones ,Big Muffs and a Dan Elecro Wasabi with a 10 db clean boost and they sound good through the Tupelo but for me this amp wants to stay simple .I use a delay in the effects loop and a compressor and the Colour Boost(not at the same time) in the front of the amp and so far I'm really liking it.This may well be the best amp I've ever owned. As the speaker breaks in it just sounds better and better.I have a 2x12 cab with 60 watt Celestian Relics and it sound's great through that to. joek86 July 4th, 2010, 10:30 AM I haven't tried the Colour Boost yet, but I am tempted. I have a Timmy and a BJFE Honey Bee on order. Do you have the combo or seperates; I have seperates? I have owned allot of Boutique amps, but this is the best. I have a SOHO too, but the Tupelo kicks its butt! ~Joe gitold July 4th, 2010, 12:40 PM I have the combo.the seperates look great but I was trying to save a few bucks since I just bought the Marshall and a Gibson Firebird .The Colour Boost is a Treble Booster .It has 4 settings that get progressively thinner.Check the demo out on their web sight.I think any decent pedal would sound good with this amp.My buddy came over with his hand wired 2 6v6 tweed Fender Reissue (I'm not sure of the model) that he paid $1800 for on sale and it was like a toy next to the Tupelo.I didn't say any thing to him but he played through my Tupelo all night with a perplexed look on his face. joek86 July 4th, 2010, 06:41 PM I'll bet it kicked! When this amp really gets out there it's going to be a real winner for 65. I'm glad that I have mine, I can't stop playing it! ~Joe Wayne Alexander July 5th, 2010, 01:50 AM I picked up a slightly used Monterey 1x12 (EF86 front end, two 6v6 power tubes, bump circuit and master voltage) a month or so ago. It took me a while to figure out how it worked (especially the footswitchable bump circuit), but this is an amazing amp. Sounds nothing like a Tweed or Blackface Deluxe, much juicier than either, no flubby bass, very loud, at least as loud as an AC15, maybe more - probably enough to play unmiked with a loud drummer in a medium sized club. A very versatile amp with a "big vocabulary" as Dan Boul would say. blackkeys July 31st, 2010, 01:03 PM I hope my search for a "keeper" is over. I bought a new 65Amps SOHO 2x12 Combo. After Matchless, Bad Cats, Vox, Marshall, Silverface Fenders i think the search is over. Such a wonderful Clean Sound - so pure and 3D sounding that I didnīt miss a Reverb. Heavenly crunch sounds and the Bump Switch - what should I say. Master Voltage great for home. If the SOHO is woth the whole money I donīt know - but overall a great, great amp. Maybe the craftsmenship in Tolex could be a little bit better. If you have any questions let me know. cacibi August 26th, 2010, 10:27 PM Well - I just picked up a used 'Lil Elvis on The Gear Page. Ships out Monday. I'm going down this road sight un-played so my fingers are really crossed. I wanted to get a gig-able EL84 combo and was honestly thinking of picking up a Dr. Z Monza. But came across the used one on TGP for slightly more than a Monza combo would cost me new. Hope it's a keeper! teleamp September 11th, 2010, 09:33 PM I miss my Lil Elvis, I was listening to some old clips and one played that sounded much better than the rest... Lil Elvis. Now, I'm gassing for another one, but if I get one, it will be a head and cab. I am Incinerator September 30th, 2010, 06:15 PM I've been GASing for a London for a few years now, especially after I got to play one a little while back that was at a shop here (no longer there anymore, but last time I was there a SoHo head and 2x12 cab was still there). I've been playing vox/brit inspired amps for almost 9 years (been playing 10 years all together), and I've had my TopHat Club Royale for the past 5 years. I will say that 18-20 watts is plenty for me, and I've heard that due to the larger trannies in the London, it probably has more headroom than my TopHat does. I've been kind of keeping an eye out for a nice used London for the past week to kind of gauge where the market is. The market is defnitely generous to the buyer of a used 65 it seems! Now I just gotta wait until after my wedding next week and sell my TopHat! I have also played the SoHo, but I didn't quite get it compared to the instant crush I had with the London. I just plugged into the London and twisted knobs until everything was there for me. Both the Colour channel and the tremolo channel, plus the trem was outtasite!!! I would love to crush both sides with a rangemaster type pedal, may be the only pedal that might need :) The SoHo seemed a little awkward to me. I've heard them from clips and people were getting a sweet sweet jangley chime from them. I on the other hand either got a trebley ice pick to the ear or honky mush, which made me plug right back into the London...Maybe I should try and give the SoHo another go if it's still there? randysmojo October 14th, 2010, 12:00 AM I tried a Stone Pony and Lil' Elvis out on Monday and man I have gas for those amps! The Lil' Elvis sounded great, but I was afraid it was just under where I wanted to be volume wise. Then I tried out the London or Soho, but I don't think they would sound any better for me than the Stone Pony did. If I had the cash, I would have walked out with it!!!! dbenson32 October 14th, 2010, 12:17 AM I've been really interested with these as of late....do they have a model that has the tube bias trem as well as the bump and master voltage? I have a bassman RI thats just too loud for any of our gigs and these seem so flexible and sound so organic. muudcat October 14th, 2010, 12:39 AM Check out the new Pro Model London. I might even sell the Rebel 20 because I havent played it in months. teleamp November 28th, 2010, 12:01 PM Can the London do the cleans (I know it will break up earlier) like the Lil Elvis? The Tupelo looks appealing, but I have a 5E3 and a BFPR, so I think it would be a bit redundant for me. So, my choice seems to be down to either the LE or the London. teleamp December 19th, 2010, 10:25 AM I ended up with the Tupelo, it's a bit stiff but that has it's advantages. Wayne Alexander December 19th, 2010, 05:29 PM I just got a London Pro 1x12. Not surprisingly, it's a great amp for semidirty to dirty sounds at rehearsal and small gig volumes, and if you always mike your amps you'll never need anything bigger. It doesn't have any more clean headroom than an AC15 or a Marshall 18 watt (not surprising, given that it's designed after those two circuits) so it's not going to give you loud clean sounds at mid-sized unmiked gig volume. If you need that you need a bigger amp. If, for reference, an AC15 is loud enough for you, then the London Pro is too. bullitt01 December 30th, 2010, 04:41 PM I recently got a Soho head with matching 2 X12 cabinet. Time has slowed to crawl; it will definitely be a long week until the pieces show up... Does anybody have experience with the Marquee? The used prices are just incredible-I couldn't pass it up. Also want to give Dan Boul props for his time in answering my email about a used amp transaction which he will not benefit from. 75TeleCustom March 21st, 2011, 01:10 PM Took delivery of a 25w Stone Pony head in December to match my 65 1x12 cab with Celestion Gold and I'm chuffed to bits with it. I had been searching for an amp that did a really good pushed clean / edge of breakup tone and this does it brilliantly and then a lot more - also cuts through the mix really well in our two guitar band setup. Master voltage is also excellent for managing rehearsal / stage volume - way better than the Master Volume on my Hot Cat. Has Blackface cleans and Brit Marshall type OD. There is a clip of Dan Boul demoing and discussing it on You Tube. ~Joe Wayne Alexander October 9th, 2011, 01:53 PM I saw Dan demoing the Producer prototype at the LA Amp show, which is where they filmed that video. Like all the other 65s, it's an upgrade over the amp sounds they listened to as starting points. It's got two main voices, one like a hotrodded mid-60s Bassman but with wider range tone and gain controls, clearly an "American" type voice, and the other "British" voice is kinda like the middle channel on the Empire, sort of an early 70's Marshall type voice, again with a wide range of tone controls and gain structures. Both voices have the bump control and booster switch, so there are 4 voices available from the footswitch without touching the other controls on the amp. The amp has 65's master voltage so the sound you want can be matched to the volume you want. I think it has around 28 watts, though I can't remember for sure, it's running EL34s but at low voltage so they'll last for many, many years, it's enough for anywhere most people will ever play, Both sides of the amp sound spectacular, from shimmering clean to very, very nasty, and the amp has the typical "big vocabulary" that other 65s have. When I was there Dan played it both through a closed back 4x12 with G12Hs and through a regular open back 2x12 H and Blue 65 cabinet. Both sounded great, the all H's cab had more punch, the H and Blue had more swirl. I prefer the H and Blue, but another guy in the room who likes all-ceramic closed back sounds more liked the 4x12 better. The key question is whether to get this, or the Empire, or both. There's some overlap between the "British" side of this and the sounds the Empire will make, so if you'd have a use for the blackface side of this, the Producer is the one to get. The Empire is more of every Marshall sound you can think of in one amp. joek86 October 9th, 2011, 03:10 PM Wayne, Thanks...what more could I want.....an in person assessment! I have played the Empire..nice amp...I own a Soho Head with a 2/12 Blue/G12H30 and a Tupelo. The Soho has a Vox/American sound going (the Bump control, with it's tone and level control provides a different more english flavor). The Producer sound like it will be more Marshall-y plus the American side. Interesting! ~Joe I saw Dan demoing the Producer prototype at the LA Amp show, which is where they filmed that video. Has Blackface cleans and Brit Marshall type OD. There is a clip of Dan Boul demoing and discussing it on You Tube. ~Joe Found the clip sounds very neat but I was more interested in the little lunchbox head teaser he showed at the end. xjazzy November 5th, 2011, 08:30 AM I recorded something with my tele and my London Pro: http://soundcloud.com/jotacaster/sets/65amps-london-pro/ MemoryMan May 17th, 2012, 04:15 PM Hey guys. London owner here. I've had mine for about 6 months and still really enjoying it. I caught a great deal on a 2x10 combo from a shop that was clearing out their 65 amps line...so it's an older combo - stocked with the jensens instead of the celestions. I'm wanting to do a speaker swap but was curious if any of you guys tried other 2x10 configurations. Really I'm just looking make it sound "bigger"....honestly more like a 1x12 or 2x12. 2x10's have that focused sound, but I grew up playing 12's and it's just taking some getting used to (I had a Bad Cat Cub 15R 2x10 combo that I felt similar about...I prefer the London over the Cub...not shrill like the Bad Cat could be at low levels). I know I could send the chassis to Dan and he could swap the baffle out for me to fit a 12" but that will cost me a bit of time and money. I thought of doing the 10" gold and greenback setup. Thoughts? gtrsrv May 17th, 2012, 08:53 PM that speaker setup could be good but i think 2 golds would be better. I use a 212 cab with a Gold and a G12H30 and My London sound fantastic. MemoryMan May 18th, 2012, 08:36 PM Right on. So you think it best to have a matched pair? I do like the idea based on usually only ever mic'ing one speaker (which isn't always an accurate depiction of what you're hearing when using unmatched speakers). I hope I can find some used ones as $400 is a lot to drop at the moment. gitold November 4th, 2012, 09:41 AM 65 Amp owners...Have you seen the price changes. My Tupelo went from $2400 to $3000 over night. Dan says he has to do it because all his costs are going up too fast. Glad I got mine when I did . I had been thinking about a Ventura but it's price went up $800 bucks. Whew. xjazzy November 9th, 2012, 04:28 PM I'd love to get a Ventura later but not with the new price! asatbender November 10th, 2012, 08:43 AM Any of you guys listen to "Lunch with Dan Boul" on Wednesdays? He does it on Ustream but post to Youtube later. It's an interesting show with interesting guest. This past Wednesday, he talked about the price increase and why he had to do it. he basically says his parts prices have gone through the roof and transformers alone ar $250-300. gitold November 10th, 2012, 05:19 PM I've listened to some and it's fun for a while but I think he needs to put the pipe down if ya know what I mean. ralvarezguitar November 28th, 2012, 01:45 PM I gotta get myself a 65 AMP ! gitold February 19th, 2013, 05:17 PM http://www.sonicstate.com/amped/2013/02/15/65amps-full-factory-tour-exciting-news/ 65 Amp fans check this vid out. I was worried they might be in trouble when the prices went up but it looks like they are a healthy company with a big year coming. buyusfear April 14th, 2013, 03:35 PM I started with a Royal Albert 5 years ago or so, then my buddy got a Soho, and then I got a 'lil Elvis for my office and grab and go stuff. Love the amps, can't wait to get another one. perhaps a Ventura or London pro, or Empire, or Producer.... Dan is a quality guy and is building a solid company. Their recent backing/merger with Boutique amps distribution has allowed them to bring a lot of steps in house, including cabinets/milling, and lower their costs. Its all the same guys building, but now when they place a speaker order, its on the back of several dozen pallets a month, rather than a year. His current next "big" thing is opening up "65Glass" in Puerto Rico, effectively owning and manufacturing top shelf vacuum tubes. He says this is a few years out, but how cool is that! In a world crowded by many many amazing boutique amp builders, 65 set themselves apart in a big way. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/buyusfear/Ampphotoshoot65amps3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/buyusfear/Ampphotoshoot65amps1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/buyusfear/Ampphotoshoot65amps6.jpg |
