Uma Floresta August 17th, 2009, 07:09 PM I built this one some time ago, and it's really quite useful. It's got a buzzy 60s kind of sound, but it doesn't sound exactly like any of the fuzzes from the era. It's silicon so the sound won't change with the weather, and it uses no expensive or rare parts.

It was originally designed by the brother (IIRC) of the guitarist of the Brazilian pop band, Os Mutantes, by the way.
I've used it in several songs I've written now.
Mutantes fuzz with into a clean amp sim, no other effects (skip to 1:51)

Mutantes fuzz into a modified Professor Tweed (skip to 1:39):

Uma Floresta August 17th, 2009, 07:11 PM By the way, C5 sounds best if it's a small value, anything typically in the "pF" range. You can omit R5 and use a 100k audio pot at the end instead of the 15K listed.
Stevil August 17th, 2009, 07:51 PM Very sick sounding fuzz. I like it. I just built a Fuzzrite clone, soon to be boxed, and am in the works with a Orpheum clone. Needless to say, I went through a sick, 60's fuzz kick recently. That's a cool little song, too. Nice work.

Thanks! It really works for me. I needed something buzzy like some of the old spaghetti western soundtracks, and this did the trick.
Mine is actually housed in an old Big Muff enclosure with a Beavis Trotsky Drive - the one in the pic is one I built for someone else. I don't use the Trotsky, so I'm thinking someday I'll house it with something like a Fuzzrite clone.
Seal_broken August 18th, 2009, 01:04 PM you said it was build cheap, how cheap?

Depends on where you get your parts, but from Small bear, I'd say you could build it for about $50 worth of parts. Less if you already have some of them already.

This song also uses the Mutantes fuzz for the solo parts, again stacked with the Professor Tweed.
Stevil August 18th, 2009, 07:45 PM I like the sound of that one as well. If you go with a silicon Fuzzrite clone just make sure you use one of the schems floating around that has the 22K resistor in it. A lot of them leave that off because it was and offboard resistor, but it would sound very different without it. If you ever need it just PM me and I'll send it over. I also drew up a no-cut vero that's small enough to fit in one of the smaller pedal parts plus boxes, but I haven't had a chance to test it yet. Only one jumper, too. I have all of it soldered up except I'm short two 500K pots (until a week or so), so I can't validate it yet.

Thanks very much, I appreciate the tips - I'll let you know if and when I get around to deciding to build one!
