Carr Drivers?

Any Carr owners out there? I got a Carr Hammerhead from a buddy of mine for a good price. While the lack of tone controls on this model is a little strange, it seems to do no wrong. It does a great sorta tweed meets little Marshall sorta thing. The construction and quality of parts is impressive. Now if only I could get the cash together for a Slant V 6.

Oh yeah, I have two Carrs - a Vincent and a Mercury. They are both incredible, though different sounding (which is why I like having two). I mainly use the Vincent, and to borrow a phrase from my single malt scotch days, it has great complexity. You can hear so many tones, undertones, flavors, moods, all rich and clear and distinct, while blending together perfectly. Though I prefer clean tones for blues (and also since it is in my bedroom), I dont play it much at overdriven levels, but with the boost on, well, this Carr really drives (pun intended).

I got both of these, on ebay, in mint condition for considerably less than what a new one would cost: I think I got the Vincent for $1500 and the Mercury for $1750 or something like that. That was back in the days of more available cash and feeling like I could spend (especially since my alimony obligation had then just ended, and I felt liberated money-wise -- a dangerous thing sometimes).

I have a Hammerhead too, and was a little puzzled by the controls at first, but I wrote to Carr and they sent me the owners manual which explained everything really well. I'm constantly amazed by the tones that I can get out of this amp, and the sensitivity when I roll off the volume knob on my guitar. My pedal collection has been gathering dust in the corner for a couple of months now.
I'm saving my pennies for a Slant 6v as well... Maybe for Christmas, if I'm a good boy. ;)

Don't have one but I've always wanted a Rambler since I first heard one. Sounded great with a tele, seemed to complement each other well.

A buddy of mine who owns a Slant 6V has agreed to let me use it for a week to check it out. In return, he's going to borrow my Hammerhead. We're doing the swap after work today. I'll be back to report on how the two amps compare.

I feel like a little kid, I'm so excited.

I've had my Mercury for about 2 years. In two modes the tone controls are bypassed, but It gets a great sound so I don't worry about it. I briefly had a Slant V6 (bought it cheap on ebay just to test drive), it was a really nice sounding amp. It was easilty the best switchable two channel amp I have tried. Usually on the two channels (Boogie, Marshall, Rivera etc), one channel will outshine the other. The slant V6 had a fantastic clean and a fantastic dirty. I didn't really need a gigging amp so I sold it after playing around with it for a month or two.

Oh man... I think I'm in love. As Steve said, both channels are unbelievable. The clean side is so rich and responsive, and clear as a bell. The gain channel is just one giant sweet spot... Everything from a hint of grit to full on crunch, and even with the gain maxed, the notes within the chords ring out.
I'm really at a loss for words... I need one of these.

Well, there's a Rambler for sale here on the Classifieds:

Whatcha waitin' for . . . ?

That's a pretty fair price too, IMHO (I have no connection to seller, it's just MHO).

Have both a Rambler and a Slant 6v---they are all I gig with. Both amazing amps distinguished by the fact they seem to work very musically every time, in every situation. The Rambler is deceptively versatile: the triode mode delivers some incredible heavier rock tones when set correctly. I've played a Jazz gig and a fairly heavy rock gig in the same night with the Rambler and no pedals.

Can't say enough good about Carr's amps, and these two in particular.

These Slant 6V reviews aren't helping my efforts at long term savings...

So, I took the plunge. After borrowing my buddies Slant 6 for a week, I was hooked. He felt the same about my Hammerhead. I managed to pick up an older Slant 6 on ebay for a reasonable price. I think the thing about this amp that impresses me the most is how it cuts through the mix. Still testing, but I swear I couldn't get a bad sound out of this amp if you held a gun to my head.
If anyone wants to sell a Hammerhead, let me know, I'll pass it on.

I'm debating-trip to Germany or Slant 6. Not sure yet, but I'm betting Germany will still be there...

That's the spirit... I have no regrets, and I have also put off a trip to Europe for a while. Like you said, it will still be there.

Keep us informed !

My good buddy Coco Montoya has been using these for a few years now. Did a show with him in San Fran 3 years ago. He brought a little single 12 combo for me to use. I'm thinking, 'well, I won't be heard tonight'. Wrong. Couldn't turn the damn thing up past 3 without making ears bleed. Unbelievable amps....

I have played a Rambler since 2001 and just picked up it's big brother, the Imperial. Unfortuneately due to our sluggish economy the Imperial is listed in the classifieds here.

Dude,

Sell the Rambler and keep the Imperial. The Ramblers are plentiful, and there are less than 90 Imperials on the planet, as opposed to a thousand or more Ramblers.

You can always get another one, and the selling price is about the same.

My two cents.

I am a happy Carr Raleigh owner. My search for a perfect bedroom practice amp is over. I have clean to mean with no pedals needed. Plus, the clean channel takes pedals very well for getting a lighter overdriven tone than the higher gain master volume channel. Quality is impeccable on these amps. Pricey, but worth it to me.

I have a Slant6V I use alone or with a custom built speaker cab with a matching speaker when I need it, found it used when they were still around 2K new...love the clean channel the most.

Rambler owner. Desert Island amp. I am lucky and own some other boutique and high end amps but when the deal is done my Rambler would be my keeper if a divorce sucked all of the others away. Single 12" , very light , quality build and components, excellent customer service, Pentode / Triode switch, and I have been a sucker for 6L6 paired amps for ever. Did I leave anything out? Ohhhhhh yeah....Amazing tone, built in reverb and tremendous tremelo!

Nothing even comes close! All hail Steve Carr for vision and follow through. Not seen often in this world anymore.

Hi everyone, some great amps listed here!

I own a Slant 6V. It's the most beautiful clean channel I've ever heard. I always liked the lead channel but actually had it modified by Henry at Redplate Amps to Dumble OD specs-it's a totally different lead channel, and at times I miss the original tone, but this is also amazing, singing and rich.

Carr Raleigh ownere here. Great cleans and good means. Can't beat it for size or flexibility. I wish it had a bigger bottom end, but that's really not an issue for home use.

So, I know I am asking a biased group of people here but, here goes....

I have a Fender FSR Limited Edition Deluxe Reverb RI - it's got a Jensen P-12Q speaker instead of whatever is in the regular RIs and it's a cool wine red color with wheat grillcloth. I love the amp - great tone, output, size, weight - ever since I got it, I pretty much stopped looking for my next amp. Then, last weekend, I played a Carr Rambler....

I was already familair with Carr, as a buddy of mine has long had a Mercury. This Rambler is simply incredible - it strikes me as a *better* Deluxe Reverb. And it is pre-owned, though it looks brand new, priced at $1650. This seems too good to pass up but, if I buy it, I can't see hanging on to my DR as well. They're kinda the same amp, right? And, of course, even used, it's twice the price of my DR.

So, what do you Carr lovers say? Go for it? Am I gonna love it twice as much as my DR? (It sure seemed so for the hour I spent with it...) Any point in hanging onto the DRRI if I go for it?

So, after some mental debate about whether to buy yet another amp, I bought the Carr Rambler…holy hell, am I glad that I did! What an incredible amp! I've done a couple of rehearsals and one gig with it now and I just love it.

I'd been playing through a Limited Edition DRRI - great amp and, I had thought, the final stop for me on blackface tone. Then, I saw this Rambler on the floor *lightly used* at a local shop, plugged in and was floored. The richest, warmest, glassiest clean tone I've ever heard; killer reverb (I only like a touch); great sounding trem; a mid EQ; more clean headroom and power than my DRRI; and the pentode/triode switch makes more flexible than my Fender. It's the perfect amp for me. Every time I play it, I feel like I'm getting away with something by having it. Its an amazing piece of gear.

Now, I just have to decide whether or not to sell my DRRI or keep it around as a backup….

I am getting more and more interested in these Carr amps. I was actually looking at Swart as well but these Ramblers seem to be getting a lot of love. One of our local shops has the Sportsman for sale....any feedback or reviews here???

My musical idol, Mac McCaughan, lead singer/guitarist for the band Superchunk, is selling his guitar amp. He's selling it because it's a bit too much power & volume for him. It's a 40 watt Carr Slant 6V.

I would totally buy the amp, just because it's Mac's amp, except that it would blow out all my windows, destroy my house and deafen the family. Superchunk is a pretty damned loud band, and if it's too much for him, imagine what it'd be like in my house.

I bought a used Carr Vincent as a backup. It quickly became my #1 amp. Incredible pedal platform, grab and go size, yet at 33 watts it will hang with any 50 watt amp on any stage. Built like a tank.

Have been both aware and in awe of the CARR quality for some time but I have lately been swayed by the equally fantastic ToneKing amps. Blimey would be a difficult one to choose between!

On another note - what are the opinions on the new CARR 'BLOKE' El84 amp? One trick Pony??

Just picked up this little Carr Raleigh for home practice. It was a bit grubby when I got it, had some stains on the tolex and a couple of small rips but I've sorted it all out so she's almost like new. I don't like the master volume channel at all (sounds tiny and fizzy to my ears no matter how I set it) but the clean channel is absolutely glorious and it takes my drive pedals exceptionally well for the times I want to crunch it up a little. A very tonefull 3 watts and ideal for my practice space.

I am a proud new member of the club. I recently picked up The Viceroy and I love it. Nice lush Blackface style clean tones and Tweed like overdrive.
