Dumpster Rat Build w/PICS

Well, once again - the devil does find time for idle hands. Not that I'm not busy, but it's always fun to squeeze one more project in.

The criteria for this project were as follows:

- Replace the guts of my OCD clone with something "better"
- Utilize one of the wonderful LM308N chips that I have in my possession
- Repurpose the OCD clone enclosure (for the zillionth time)
- Populate the pcb with spare or pulled components as much as possible
- Add in a few Rat tweaks, mainly thanks to Martin C (a.k.a. Soul Sonic)

...What you see below is the result of this madness. Since it's a repurposed build, I'm calling it the Dumpster Rat. The crappy pcb is one of the remaining hunks of thin stuff that I got from Electronics Goldmine. The caps are a mix of polarized and NP electros, spendy metal films, and a few Xicon greenies (or reds!).

Some of the "twists" are as follows:

- Filter circuit is a 20K/.018uF combination.
- 7pF compensation cap.
- .56uF/100 ohm HP filter "leg" that is removed with the Ruetz Mod.
- 2N5457 buffer o/p tranny.
- 10uF coupling cap on 308's output

There are few other subtle tweaks here and there, but it all adds up to a Rat variation with less mids, a slightly more polite full gain mode, and better note definition due to the smaller compensation cap (Martin's mod uses an even smaller cap - like 3pF!).

The faux chrome on the enclosure is a hunk of "temporary" rear view mirror material (plastic). It scratches super easily, but seems to add to the vibe. But the blue edges and candy apple knobs do clash, I admit.

It's amazing - all of these years later, the Rat still is one of the better extreme dirt boxes, IMO. This thing, even in modded form, simply smokes the OCD into a pile of cinders!

nice

i've builded myself (for the third time) a new RAT with some mods...

DO TRY MOSFET CLIPPERS.... really.... 2n7000 with a GE DIODE (for asymetric)

Mine now has Tants instead of electrolytics.

Sounds awesome...

it sounds good even as a OVERDRIVE and BOOSTER (that clean can it gets)

I was on a 2N7000/BS170 (even used the BIG IRF series) binge last year, for just about any pedal that has clippers to ground. And I believe that the Ruetz page includes such, as well.

Hermida (not in the Rat) uses BAT41 Schottky diodes in place of the 1N34A's, in series. The forward voltage is a little lower, and they fit nicer. And BAT42's have an even lower forward voltage (they sound awesome in some fuzz pedals).

...The Zendrive uses a BAT41/2N7000 and BAT41/BAT41/2N7000 in parallel.

...I'm actually currently on a kick where I use either the E/B or C/B of an ordinary BJT in series with a Schottky, to get a great "in between" threshold, as well as the "soft knee" that the 2N7000 body diode can sometimes provide.

Yeah - a slightly tweaked Rat has an awesome light drive/boost capability as well!

changing the caps all give the RAT a little more air and character...

polys on some distortion pedals sounds steryle...

in this pedal i really LOOOOOVE Tants.

That's probably because of all of the slew rate mess (in a good way) that's going on.

Where do you use the tantalums in your Rat mods? Any particular values, or do you just replace the stock units with the same value in tantalum form?

I've got a boatload of 1uF tantalums and never really think to put them in anything. Now you've piqued my curiosity!

4,7uF and 1uF where replaced.... (the cap of the Ruetz mod got dispached forever )

Sorry to ask , but i don't understand what "slew rate" is (although i've hear about it a lot when reading about the RAT, but as i don't speak english very well, i don't understand it)

The input cap wasn't changed (nor value nor material (poly))

Slew rate is the ability of the op amp to accurately amplify the signal. If it cannot fast enough, the op amp will distort.

LM308N has a very bad slew rate for clean audio amplification, but it is very good for pedal distortion.

I now have a 1uF tantalum paired with a 100 ohm resistor where the stock 2.2uF/47 ohm components were (the parts that are removed with the Ruetz mod) - sounds very, very good. Raspy and chewy, but in a good way (almost exaggerates the stock Rat behavior a little bit).

aha!!! try it in the other 4,7uf and 1uF parts....
